Disney Inflation article & chart

if that chart is correct a lot of us wont be able to afford to go there ever again! :(

There will be a limit to how high ticket prices can go, at least until inflation and salaries catch up. I'm 100% positive tickets and hotel prices will keep going up, but I'm also certain that at some point the % increase will slow down as more and more people get priced out. I believe that all the major players are pushing to see how high they can go before they hit that breaking point.

It is simple supply and demand. Plus that article does not factor in the ways WDW cheapens the vacation, like free dining, military tickets, etc. But WDW isn't growing much larger, but the population of the US (and the world) certainly is, and more importantly the folks who went to WDW as kids and are now returning with their own kids (thats me in 3 months!) will become a major driver. So I expect WDW prices to continue to rise into the stratosphere so long as parks are full, food is bought, and merchandise flies off shelves.

There's an interesting factor to the discussion on this that no economist, projectionist, etc... can measure and estimate and that is the "value" of a trip to a Disney Park perceived by an individual. This is why many on the boards don't see a significant problem with price increases, as they are so into WDW that they'll pay as much as they need to to experience it. Because it's hard to argue "value", people use comparisons to other consumer goods, other theme parks, and multi-day ticket prices.

Unfortunately for Disney, there aren't too many people like that ($464 for an AP is nearing my limit) and, as another poster alluded to, the market won't bare $180 for one-day at MK, and Disney will eventually have to adjust to the market.

I totally agree with you both, never even implied it was okay just saying everyone is always saying Disney high and the other 2 are about the same they're all out of control

It's funny you bring that up actually, because part of what's driving prices up is the opposite of a price-war between the Orlando theme parks. Every parks wants to be the first to increase prices to and have the highest price to make their park look like the best (as you obviously need to pay more for the best;)), so that situation, a relatively new situation, is also driving up the prices.

But if they can limit a perk that was previously included for free and offer its full value back in the form of an upgrade, it will be easier for them to get the ticket price higher without it seeming that way.

All good points but I think the problem is they will never price themselves out..oh maybe for you and me and any other average Joes & Janes but as long as the WORLD keeps coming ( and some areas with a lot of disposable cash) I don't see an end to the increases any time soon if at all

One difference between Universal and WDW is that Portofino is a lot less expensive than the Polynesian Resort and much nicer. I say that as someone who used to stay at the Polynesian many years ago and has been priced out.

Otherwise this article makes me want to go to Gatorland. We've never been and the price looks real reasonable.

I believe Gatorland is the longest running amusement park in FL. Nice to see its prices staying pretty flat. And! They've added a splash zone in the last decade, too.

Am I the only one who's just a little worried about a splash zone in a park whose main feature is gators?

I loved this article, and I, too, am wondering how long I will be able to chase these parks through their price wars of ever increasing ticket prices. I'm new to Disney, having fallen in love my first visit in December. But, I'm no fool, and if they keep grabbing at my money, I will fall out of love. I don't mind spending lotsa money on vacation, but I don't want them dipping into my pocket for every little thing, like Atlantis does.

I would just point out that that the inflation calculator uses the CPI which, while pointed to as a measure of inflation, is a flawed statistic. For example, it does not include food and energy. Because why would we care about price increases in those items right???? sheesh.

And it will also conclude there is no inflation if the product being offered, while more expensive, is superior. This is called hedonic adjustments. I suppose there is some merit to that thought, but it is so subjective it renders the CPI useless.

Said another way...the $50 ticket that gets inflated to $62 in his chart...that's about 2% per year in inflation.

does anyone really think prices are only going up 2% per year in your goods and services over the last 10 years? I don't. I would guess more like 5%.

Inflating $50 at 5% over 10 years gets you $82 (vs the $95 they charge).

So bad, but not as bad as his chart indicates.

DH and I just had this discussion the other day. We will always go to Disney - but will have to figure out how to afford it. I told him this may be our last year at WL - and we may go back to POR or will need to try to rent DVC points. For some reason, I really really had sticker shock this year!!!

Those who want to go will figure out a way- they may just need to adjust the expectations.
