Disney in September

We went in September many years ago and it was really one of our best trips. The crowds will be lighter. It'll still be hot but less rainy. We got to do MNSSHP and F&W. I think it's a great time to go! I was thinking about going then, too, but my kids want to cruise. Darn it!

We went in September for our last trip. It was as hot and humid as summer, but I do agree about less rain. We found that the crowd was primarily families with preschool age children. It caused the crowd pattern to be a bit different than I expected. The parks were crowded by 10 a.m., but everyone was pooped and leaving by 2. Our best days were actually the days we slept in and hit the parks in the afternoons.

When you say "nervous about weather" what are you referring to? The heat, hurricanes, rain, etc.?

I cruised late Sept and was in Orlando early October in 2014. Apparently while we were on the 4 day cruised it was pouring most of the time back in Orlando. But I just remember sun when we got there...

It’s hot & humid with chances of afternoon showers, which actually just makes it more humid. Plus there’s always a chance of a hurricane, last year was Irma. Having said that, it’s doable & fun with frequent a/c breaks, lots of water, lots of sunblock, wear hats & breathable fabrics, & be able to go with the flow & take a break when the weather is too much for you.

September= swimming through pea soup. My DH absolutely hates being hot. It was surface of the sun hot, but also humid like I’ve never felt before.

THAT SAID, we had an amazing time. We drank water like crazy to stay hydrated and were smart about sunblock. Mosquitoes were a non issue. Swimming was awesome. There are plenty of attractions in AC. We had cooling towels but didn’t use them. Most lines are on the shade or in AC.

If you’ve never done September, you should give it a try! If you go in expecting the heat and being prepared for it, you will have an incredible time.

You can beat the sun and the heat with Columbia PFG shirts. I recommend the Tidal Tee II for women and the Terminal Tackle for men. They have a built-in SPF 50 and despite the long sleeves, keep you MUCH cooler than cotton (don't let the long sleeves fool you), and dry quickly if you get rained on or go on Splash Mountain. They're a staple for me at the parks.

I have done September trips the past few years and will again this year. We have gotten lucky. Only had two very rainy days. It still hot, so be ready for that. Great time to go if the weather cooperates. Enjoy.

It will rain at least once, if not a little every day. It can be gully washers that last 5 min., light showers that are on and off all day, light showers all day long. It will be hot, it will be humid. There is a chance a hurricane might develop, a slimmer chance it might impact Orlando with lots of rain and winds. I wouldn't let it bother me, I go often in Sept. since I love F&W. I just take and umbrella and poncho and go about my day. When it rains, the parks tend to empty out so it's lots of fun. Just splash in the puddles and go with it. If a hurricane happens to hit, Disney is well prepared for it.

Our last trip was at the end of Sept and it was very hott and humid. We did have a few rain showers during that trip. I was debating moving our Nov trip this year to sept to take advantage of the free dining but I cant take the heat. But, you will enjoy food & wine festival and I will agree we saw a lot more families with younger preschool/toddler aged kids. Have fun!

Hurricanes and rain

I completely forgot about the possibility of hurricanes because there were none that impacted Orlando during the 2 years that I went to WDW in September. Hurricane season runs from July through November, so it seems like a big period to block out for travel.

Rain is always possible in the summer through early fall because that's our rainy season. Have some ponchos from the dollar store handy and you'll be good. As far as hurricanes go, you will have plenty of warning if a storm could potentially impact central Florida. Hurricane's don't normally impact central Florida directly, so I wouldn't let it keep you from booking your trip in September because the crowds can be less after Labor Day!

I was there last September when Irma came through..... people were freaking out cancelling trips and doing everything they possibly could to get the heck out before Irma made landfall.

I decided to trust that Disney knew what they were doing and hunkered down for the duration. I did everything I was told to do and then some.

Had lots of food and water, towels and toiletries.

Stayed in my room when told to, watching tv and reading books. Even bought a deck of cards and played some solitaire. I missed 2 days in the parks and got to spend 2 extra days in my favourite place in the world!

Irma ended up blowing through Orlando some point during the night and I literally slept right through it!

FWIW, I was in a ground floor room in the 50’s section at POP.

Just as hot and humid as summer, with the very real added threat of hurricanes. One time with a washed out trip because of a tropical storm was enough for us. You are right to be nervous about the weather.

My advice - get some good trip interruption insurance~~!

Yes, @Northern Disney Girl, Disney does/has done very well for hurricane preparedness, but even they can't control/predict what hurricanes can sometimes do, unfortunately!!
I'm a south LA girl that can tell you some tales! I will not be in the path of one if I can help it - will be at the front of the pack fleeing!

It definitely is still hot. We were there late last September and it was still "summer hot". Obviously, there is a CHANCE of hurricanes at that time of year, but honestly I would worry more about hurricanes BEFORE your trip than during. I say this because we got there right after the rash of hurricanes they had and everyone who delayed their trip was there with us. It was miserable and way overcrowded. We would have rather been there during as crowds were way lower.

Technically, Fall begins Sept. 22, so it doesn't just feel like summer, it literally is summer. As far as temps are concerned there is virtually no difference between September and August. Google some weather sites and look at historical data for the area. Any drops in temps are very gradual in September and October. Maybe there's less humidity, but hot is hot. Worried about hurricanes? I've become friends with a Dis-er who was there during Irma last year and had a really good time because so many people cancelled their trips--no crowds!(They did have to stay in the resort for a day or so but they made the best of it.)

As for crowds, there will always be more people there than you'd like. At some point during your trip you'll look at a mass of humanity and think "I thought this was supposed to be a slow time?!?"

But if you can go, you should. Just plant to take measures to stay cool. I like frozen beverages during the especially hot times.

You have to just embrace the heat, humidity, and downpours.

Orlando is the first truly hot and humid place that I've traveled to. My first trip was in a September. The moment the doors opened at MCO it hit me like a soggy, sweaty, suffocating blanket.

I asked myself, "what was Walt Disney thinking, choosing this place!?"

But after reframing it in my mind, I now kind of miss heat and rain when I go on a trip that doesn't have it. I associate it with vacation mode at WDW. Kind of hard to describe why... but it just seems part of the experience.

Kind of how you might enjoy working up a sweat when exercising... it just feels right.

I don't know I'd be great if I had to live in Orlando and wear a suit to work.
