My son, 8, broke his arm almost two weeks ago. It was a really bad break, between his wrist and his elbow at a not natural 90 degree angle (thankfully not compound fracture). He is now in a cast past his elbow. He is in his cast probably until late October (depending on how it heals of course) and disney for us in the middle of November. The Dr is considering putting a short arm cast (below elbow) on when he gets the big one off because breaks like his are really easy to re-break.

Now, my son, can trip on air and is constantly hurting himself. I really will push for the short arm cast for a while longer. Depending on how long the dr wants to keep it on, should I push for it to be ON at Disney or OFF at Disney.

I think ON because I would hate to be in the ER during the trip with another broken arm. I think OFF because, well, it would just be better for rides and swimming (although we can get the cast bag which allows for swimming now) and during rainstorms.

Any experiences with casts at Disney??

My son was 3 when he broke his arm 4 weeks before our trip. Technically his sister broke it practicing gymnastics! Anyway, we had his cast changed the day before our trip to a waterproof cast and we had no problems at all. As a matter of fact, he got lots and lots of extra attention from the characters and cm's because of it.

My ds12 can break bones doing almost nothing. He has had 7 casts ( 3x feet, 2 arm, 2 hand/finger) plus a broken toe, sprained knee, torn MCL (knee), 2 sprained wrists, a sprained ankle and is in a sling right now for a separated shoulder.

He had one waterproof cast and did not like it. The liner is a plastic, bubblewrap like material and he said it was hot.

My dd5 just got her cast off after 4 weeks. She fractured both bones in her arm about midway between her wrist and elbow. Like your son her cast went up past her elbow. Now she has a brace to wear when she is at school and outside playing. This still provides some protection and is a lot cooler and more comfortable than the cast.

A little tip for the itching that you son will probably endure. We found a cast cleaning kit at our local CVS. It included a long, thin, flexible strap with velcro on one end and a jar of cleaning pads. She loved it!

If it gets recast get the waterproof cast. Worth every penny. Made even regular life so much easier when dd broke her wrist. A friend of her broke his arm at the beginning of summer and had one. He was jumping in and out of pools the next day.
