Although I voted "dislike" that really doesn't tell the story. I really do like the hat itself, its just where they put it that I don't like.

I voted 'like' for the same reason. It should be associated with the Animation courtyard.

Honestly, I like the hat! I grew up with it, so it's always been the big icon i look for when i enter the park. :upsidedow

Mickey's Sorcerer hat is one of my all time favorite Disney images. I think it's cool that it's in a WDW park but....I wish it has something cooler inside of it like a ride or movie or something other than what is there. The location is not important to me, it's fine where it is, but if the internal part of it can be improved, I'd be cool with a relocation.:earsboy:

That would be nicer having an attraction inside the weenie instead of a pin trading shop.

I always hear contradictions to this theory, but I am fairly sure that the hat was always intended to be permanent, and was placed there because of PhotoPass. I think the rights to the image of the Chinese Theater are owned by someone other than Disney, and that whenever Disney sells something with that image on it, they have to pay that owner. (This would also explain why the mouse-eared water tower, and not the Chinese Theater, was the original Studios icon -- so they didn't have to pay royalties on D/MGMS souvenirs that displayed images of the icon.) Needless to say, Disney sells countless photos shot down Hollywood Boulevard every day via PhotoPass, and to keep the Chinese Theater out of those photos, they built the hat. If I'm right, it won't be moved anytime soon for this reason.

That is what I have been told as a CM. The people who owned the Chinese Theater complained that it was the "icon" for MGM and they wanted more money

Actually, it had orginally been planned to be an attraction, similar to Spaceship Earth at Epcot, and to be placed elsewhere in the park, but as time went on the idea was scrapped, mostly because of money issues.

It's not true. They can't get "more" money because they don't get ANY money from it... whether the hat is there or not. Just like the owners of the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building and Flatiron Building don't get paid to be part of the cityscape in the Streets of America.

As I understand it, there is indeed a royalty issue with the Chinese Theater. It kicks in when Disney SELLS an item that has an image of the theater on it. The problem arises with PhotoPass. If Disney sells any PhotoPass photos that show the theater (or Brown Derby as well, for that matter) then they owe the owner of the actual building a royalty stipend. To avoid these charges, Disney built the hat to block the view of the theater in PhotoPass pictures.

Don't know if this would also be the case with the other buildings you mention. I've never used PhotoPass on Streets of America. Do the photographers include these buildings in their shots?

Doesn't matter where PhotoPass is -- it's not true. I know people say it's true... all the time. But it's just not so.
