Disney going smoke free

If Disney went smoke free completely (not allowed even designated smoking areas) as a private business decision, would you be more inclined to go, less inclined to go or neutral about it?

I'm assuming WDW restaurants are smoke free because of FL law--not sure what laws are for CA, Japan, Hong Kong or Paris.

Any thoughts?

Well, I'm a smoker (in process of cutting back and quiting..goal is for the end of the year to be completely free of cigarettes), but it wouldn't change my thoughts about going there at all. However, I don't think it would be a smart move on Disney's part to do such a thing, I fear it would offend some smokers and it could keep them away. I agree with not smoking in the hotel rooms or eating establishments, but in a separate area just for smokers.

Same for Disneyland Paris. No smoking in enclosed public areas such as restuarants, hotels and bars. Both parks also have smoking areas in them however they are not enforced. I'm not sure how strict they are in WDW but in DLRP they are not enforced at all.

As far as non smoking in WDW..I'm surprised you are even still allowed to smoke at all, even in designated areas.

I"m not a smoker but it wouldn't make me more inclined to go. I rarely notice smoking at WDW anyways. But if they banned it, I'd have to deal with even more cranky people so for goodness sakes, let em light up!

Disney would then be completely magical! I am not trying to incite anyone or anything, but not have to wash my hair and/or clothing after going by a smoking area would be heavenly, and yes, I stay as far from them as I can, but as we all know, not everyone follows the rules and the smoking areas are close to some things in WDW as well.

The smoke from the smoking areas travels to the non smoking areas and i hate that.

I'm all for it and think it is insurance related. By instituting a smoke free policy here at work, which includes not only the building but the entire grounds, we received a health insurance discount. If any employee wants to smoke they must now leave the grounds and anyone caught will face immediate termination no questions asked.

With as many employees as Disney has I'm sure they have a much larger incentive than we do so I am not all that surprised.

As far as how it will effect my trip down, it won't. I only rarely noticed the smoke and knew to avoid it but as far as a health-related policy goes the more smoke free areas the better.

They have designated smoking areas in Disneyland Paris, but they aren't enforced. People light up anywhere outside (luckily not in queue lines), which means ash flying everywhere and spluttering people behind them!

However I do not like the idea of WDW banning smoking. I personally do not smoke, but some people do, and that is their choice. I want others to enjoy their holiday as much as I enjoy mine, if that means that they light up, they can go ahead (as long as it is a smoking zone or their children aren't around). It doesn't bother me.

Plus could you imagine the rant Pete would have about this!

I'm a non-smoker always have been, but I don't believe the parks should go completely smoke-free. I believe it would limit many people from attending the parks. I find these days that most smokers are reluctant smokers and would really rather not smoke, but let's face it, they are addicted. From what I have heard, quitting is the hardest hurdle they face. As long as cigarettes are legal and available, then accommodations need to be made for smokers.

Also, the smoking areas are easy to avoid if you are a non-smoker, except for one. It is directly across from Aloha Isle. It is a large seating area that could be used for those who just purchased their Dole Whip. I just wish they could relocate that one to another part of Adventureland.

I am always more inclined to frequent non-smoking establishments (good thing I live in a state where that is the "norm"!) -- I don't want my young son subjected to the same cloud of smoke that I constantly had to deal with as a child.

As for Disney, California's no smoking laws are on a par with places like FL, NY, and NJ.

I can't comment on Paris, but things may run a little differently in Hong Kong and Tokyo, as (from my travel) smoking still plays something of a role in the cultures of China and Japan.

As a non-smoker (although I prefer NEVER-smoker) who has watched both of my parents struggle (and fail) to quit, I'm mixed. On one hand, there are the smokers who will be going batty in the park b/c they can't get a cigarette. On the other hand, there are the non-smokers who might as well be smokers with all of the fumes they inhale. The smoking areas at Disney are barely noticeable, so I would say just keep them and make everybody happy. However, as someone who practically threw a party when FL banned smoking in restaurants, I'm having a hard time being against this.

Also, I don't really see Pete ranting about this, especially when more nefarious things are going on. Pete has said on the Podcast that his right to smoke does not negate someone else's right to breath clean air. However, we'll see. I do love myself a rant.

I am a non-smoker and the smoking policies of a vacation destination would impact my decisions to go there (I'll never go to Las Vegas again since there is way too much smoke there). At Disney I don't see smoking as that prevalent. I think they should keep the outdoor designated areas for smokers out of fairness to them. I do wish smokers would comply more with the areas they are allowed to smoke in; it's frustrating to try to eat a meal at an outdoor restaurant at Disney and have someone smoking within close proximity (just because you are outside, that does not mean your smoke can't choke someone up.)

DW and I are non-smokers for almost 3 years now. We decided to quit together. When we were smokers, we would respect the areas designated for smokers and wouldn't smoke outside these areas. I agree that more smokers need to smoke in the designated areas and have respect for those who don't smoke.

IMO as an ex-smoker, if Disney went completely smoke-free, then people who smoke will be less inclined to go. After the first day or so of constantly having to leave the park to go some place where they are allowed to smoke, the trip may not be as enjoyable for them; therefore it would be easier for them to just not go. I would say leave the designated smoking areas, but enforce the smoking policy a little more.

I wouldn't care much, but I'd go less often because I frequently travel with another Disney geek and no way in hell she'd go if she couldn't smoke. The woman needs her cigarettes.

I don't think the OP meant Disney is doing this, I think the question was "What if?"

I'm not sure what I would do. I am a smoker. I have no problem with the no smoking policies in the restaurants or even the resort rooms, but if you couldn't smoke on property anywhere? I don't know. When I go to Disney I actually don't smoke very much, but I do like to sit in a designated area and have a cigarette occasionally, mostly when I'm waiting for something or someone. I think I would be re-thinking things if I knew there was no where I could smoke. I don't need stress added to my vacation.

Not really a good argument, since alcohol is banned in MK. Obviously it's a bit different, but Disney doesn't "need" to make accommodations for anyone's addictions.

Even as a nonsmoker who HATES cigarettes (they make me soooo sick, even just breathing in the smoke ), i too am a little divided on this one. i don't see anything wrong with designated smoking areas, although the smoke itself obviously can't respect those boundaries.

I just wish Disney would enforce the existing smoking areas a little better. My dd has asthma and cigarette smoke is a big trigger. We always encounter a few smokers who seem to think it's okay to have a quick smoke while walking from one attraction to the next.

It's easy to avoid the smoking areas, but impossible to avoid the guy smoking less than 2 feet away walking the same direction you are.
