The overwhelming support we received for the "Give a Day. Get a Disney Day." program has helped us reach our goal of inspiring one million people to volunteer a day of service to their communities. The program has now ended. Although you can no longer register and sign up for volunteer opportunities on this site to earn a free Disney Theme Park ticket, you can still continue to give back to your community by locating and signing up for volunteer opportunities through HandsOn Network.

The object of the program was to inspire people to volunteer, so whether or not you get a ticket if that is your objective nothing should have changed.

TOTALLY AGREE!!!!! We are signed up but if we are told it doesn't work, oh well. We should have gotten service done more quickly. Here we go with everyone's sense to be "entitled" to participate and get the ticket!

What am I missing? Who said your kids can't go help clean the park? They can clean, they just can't get a ticket.

I regestered I thought ,I just recived an e-mail from our choice,today ,I went on to manage my account and it says that our e-mail is not in there system,I am not too happy Now,We will still do this,but I think they should have listed how many people per opps that were needed like they listed how many remained
I said this because I was not happy with myself and for waiting for an outside activity to do,,it is a shame that The other company's that just got on the list ,most likely won't get the same amount of volunteers ,We are doing the clean up Northern Ill, and we all know how much the outside along the roads and parks need cleaning after winter!

You seem to be contradicting yourself. If you are trying to teach your children that it isn't about what they can get, then the fact that they cannot get a ticket should have absolutely no effect on the lesson you are teaching.

As has been stated, there is nothing stopping your children from joining in. I suspect that they aren't the ones that are going to pay for their WDW tickets, so why do they even have to know that there won't be ones in their name, anyway?

My mistake for this whole thing ,I didn't mean to make anyone mad,I won't post a comment again,and my kids new about the free ticket ,hard to keep it from them ,it was all over the TV,I thought thatsince it was a disney thing that there would be more things posted for the youger ones to do since I am having a hard time finding things for them to do normally soooo sorry

My mistake for this whole thing ,I didn't mean to make anyone mad,I won't post a comment again,and my kids new about the free ticket ,hard to keep it from them ,it was all over the TV,I thought thatsince it was a disney thing that there would be more things posted for the youger ones to do since I am having a hard time finding things for them to do normally soooo sorry

Just wanted to say that I understand your frustration. Unfortunately most organizations do have age limits, basically due to legal issues. For example at the food bank I volunteer at you have to be at least 16. If a child gets hurt nowadays with our sue happy culture it could be catastrophic.

I'm willing to be that is why the director said no. 2nd many activities like cleaning a park with tons of strangers can raise all sorts of issues. If you have 5 year old who gets lost or injured, once again who's responsible.

I don't think that Disney sponsored the events so they probably didn't have lots of say on the activities.

Liability reasons probably. But again, your kids can clean up a park with you, they just can't do it through that organization. Take them out with gloves and trash bags and pick up your local playground. Or sit with them to make cards for nursing home patients that may never get any mail. There are lots of ways for you to teach your kids about volunteering. You don't need Disney or a free ticket to do that.

bummer! i thought i had signed my husband up to volunteer with me, but now he's listed with no volunteer opportunity and it's too late. i guess i'll be cleaning the beach without him!

He can't help clean a beach with you unless he's getting a free ticket to Disney for it?

of course in the future he can, but there were a limited number of 'spots' for the beach clean up. i suppose it's no big deal if one more person shows up, though... hopefully he'll want to come!

I do hope that this inspired many to help. I have no idea if I'll get a ticket or not but I still sent off 7 blankets when only 3 were required. I did it because I wanted to and I knew at the time that I had no idea if I would get a ticket or not.

I do understand the frustration though. I had a heck of a time getting through on the site, then finding something we could all do as a family. Found one but it never took. Had that happen a few times, computer glitches with the site.

I finally just signed up for project linus and had to enter a date of service, since they were being mailed I had no idea what date to put and just entered that day's date. Because of that it shows that my opportunity passed and I didn't show up.

So, was I inspired to volunteer, yes. Did it make it easier to find volunteer opportunities, yes. Did I see issues with how things were handled, yes (always are though). I have no complaints with the 1 million. I assumed it would go fast too.

I do wish that I could have taken my son with me to do something that would make more of an impact on him. Most places did not allow a 7 year old, whether they wanted a ticket or not. We send things all the time to those in need so this was just doing the same thing he has done in the past and I don't think he fully understands how great it is. To him he was just cutting fabric, which he likes to do as it is.

This is beautifully stated. My kids LOVE to volunteer and most of what we do is not formal volunteering. We clean the park we live near, we visit and make cards for the elderly, DD plays piano for a local senior center, we deliver meals on wheels, etc. There are plenty of things you can do by just calling the place you think might need help. That is how we arranged the piano playing thing. In high school, I read aloud to vets at the local VA hospital. A friend of mine, her kids go in weekly to a senior dining place and clear the tables for the folks eating. She started doing that when her youngest was 4.

Meals on Wheels is another great opportunity for people who want their kids to experience volunteering from a young age. As soon as my youngest could walk I had both go with me to deliver meals to seniors. The seniors LOVED seeing them. Their faces would light up, the kids loved being fussed over and visiting. It's never too early to teach your kids to give back.

We participated and had a great time. I'm grateful not just for the experience and the ticket, but for getting in touch with an organization that I want to help with again and again.

I was frantically trying to sign up January 1st because I just knew with all the Disney fans out there this would end soon. Yay for not procrastinating once in my life

Nope, most people will not continue volunteering once they get their free ticket.

Thats not true we are signed up for 2 more volunteering days and plan on doing them,,, but then we normaly do couple of volunteering days a year. just this year we are getting a disney ty present which is so cool...
