Disney gift card limits???

No big deal, but why does Disney limit the amount that I can put on one of their gift cards for use at the parks/stores ($500 online and $1500 if purchased at Dis store)? It would be convenient to have just one card with whatever amount I want to spend instead of having several cards to carry around. Just curious why this is as they must have a reason but again no biggie. Does anyone really know why they limit this? I have a few guesses myself but curious if anyone really knows for sure?

Thanks:wizard:

I don't know the real reason, but I appreciate the rule myself b/c it protects me. If I lose that card, it's not like a credit card that I can call and cancel. If I lose it and someone finds it and spends it, I'm out the money just like with cash. I'd rather lose $500 at a clip than $1,500. That's why I carry only the gift cards I know I'll need on a given day and leave the rest in the safe. It's a little inconvenient, but I feel a little safer doing it in smaller chunks.

What should I do if my Disney Gift Card is lost or stolen?
Promptly call 1-877-650-4327 to report the card lost or stolen. Your Disney Gift Card will be 'frozen' and funds remaining on the card (at the time of the call) can be transferred onto a new card. An original proof of purchase receipt for the Disney Gift Card is required to transfer the funds onto a new Disney Gift Card.

Glad that I read this! Something kept telling me to hold to the purchase recipets so I can take them with us on our trip and this is exactly why! Not that I plan on losing my cards but you just never know!!!

probably for security and fraud reasons. if you do lose the card the balance may be used (especially if you are in disney world) before it can be deactivated. the other key is you most likely need the number and not everyone keeps records of those things.

the other things thieves do is they steal your credit cards and then buy giftcards. this way they can go use a giftcard later after the credit card has been frozen as stolen. again not all companies can retrieve the giftcard numbers to trace these things.

it also may be the rules of the banking institution that actually issues these giftcards and handles the accounts if they are outsourced.

I work retail and part is security. People use stolen CC #'s, buy gift cards and sell them at half off. Also many registers are programmed to ring up to a certain $ per transaction.

Are you staying onsite? If so, just put all the cards on your room, then you only have to carry around your kttwc. You can put gift cards on your room without needing a credit card backup. You could also take a traveler's check and put cash on the room. When you check out you will get refunded the money. (Keep the cards in case they get refunded...)

Or you could put your cc on the room and pay down the balance every few days with the gift card, so when you check out you have a $0 balance and nothing actually goes on the cc.

Although I work at the Disney Store, I don't know the official reason. There must be one though. :)

I don't think it's due to the registers being able to ring up transactions to a certain amount. I have rung up transactions that are larger than $1500 - I believe it's always park tickets though.

OP, if you are staying at a Disney hotel, you can always pay off your balance with a GC before arriving at the parks - that's one less GC to carry around.

Enjoy your trip! :)
