Wow, what a busy two days!
I started off Monday reading here about the Ebates 3% back on GCs, debated whether to jump on it and finally did because GCM was still out of Target GCs, so that left GS or BB via PPDG – both of which are electronic so would allow for a “fast flip” in store in case there was a Bucks bonus this week. Unfortunately, I got the dreaded errors 70266 and 70245 and was instructed to call PayPal customer support. I did, and she was less than helpful, but could tell I was trying to buy GCs, said there were no limitations or holds on my account, said there were technical issues affecting eBay that could have caused this, and told me to try again in an hour. An hour later didn’t work, so I gave up for the day reasoning 3% Ebates and 2% Bucks wasn’t worth the trouble.
Sure enough, Tuesday kicked off with word here of a 5x Bonus! Thank you guys for the notice because you all sure are more on top of this than eBay eventually sending me an email sometime mid-morning. My account got the bonus, but my wife’s didn’t (which sucks because we have leftover credit on a GC tied to her account.) I tried PPDG again, and was able to get $500 in GS GCs and banked $50 Bucks + Ebates. One thing I’ve gathered from this thread is to be conservative with how much you order from PPDG, and $500 at one time is about as much as I’m comfortable doing. After work, I took my last batch of Target GCs from GCM and converted them all to eBay in store, and I rolled my GS GCs into eBay GCs. I didn’t want to try another order yesterday because another thing I’ve learned about PPDG and eBay, particularly with digital GCs, is to be conservative with how many times you order per day.
This morning, I ordered another $500 in GS GCs, banked another $50 Bucks + Ebates, but locked up my account again with error codes 70226 and 70266. After calls with PP, which said my account was fine; and eBay, which said it must be a technical issue that they then reported to IT and told me to try again later, my account is finally back up this afternoon. During lunch, I went to two different GS to roll back to eBay. One GS guy recognized me from the day before even though it was at a different store (!) and asked if I got these (printouts of the GCs) from PP and if I’m redeeming them just for the PowerUp reward points. I was a bit taken aback because until now, the GS employees have processed my transactions no questions asked. I said, yeah, and well sometimes PP runs sales on GS GCs. So yeah… that’s the story I went with. He rung me up fine, but I’m thinking I need to draw less attention to myself. Still, the 5x Bonus is just too good to pass up.
With my eBay account back up, I ordered $1000 in physical GS GCs from GCM and banked another $100 Bucks + Ebates. There’s been some talk here about how tedious it is for GS employees to process PPDG GCs. My stores don’t type out the GC number – they scan the barcode – but they still have to scan every printout (or email if you’re pulling them up on your phone) and then type in the four-digit PIN. The thing I like about the physical GCs is that they are swipeable like any other plastic (credit/debit) card, and GS has their card readers right on the cashier’s counter facing the customer to use so there’s no awkward pulling out paper printouts or your phone to load up and scan each email.
I still have $500 in eBay GCs that I’m thinking of trying tonight for BB from PPDG – that is, if my account isn’t locked up – or another batch of physical GS GCs. I see there’s also been some debate between GS vs. BB. In my experience, both retailers’ systems allow GC-for-GC purchases, but you all are right that GS doesn’t sell Disney GCs but BB does so that’s something to consider if you’re planning an exit strategy for your vacation funds. For that reason, I’d prefer BB to GS, and the risk of being “stuck” with their GCs. Other considerations are I don’t have anything to buy from GS other than GCs, but I could find something to buy at BB; and also if you wanted to liquidate the GCs you’re stuck with, BB sells for a lower discounted percentage (so a better return to you the seller) than GS on resale sites like Raise. So why GS? There are more GS stores around me that consistently have loadable eBay GCs in stock. But the big kicker for me, which has me dabbling in GS for the time being, is because the only way you can buy BB from a legitimate seller on eBay is from PPDG. The problem with PPDG is I can’t seem to run very much volume through it or my account gets shut down. When there’s a big Bucks bonus like 5x, which lasts just two days, you can be sure I’m going to try and maximize my Bucks. But $500 per order, per day through PPDG isn’t going to cut it. I’ve never had any problems with high volume through GCM. Unfortunately, GCM carries physical GS GCs but not BB.
On the subject of GCM, I’m hopeful they will restock Target at some point. Thank you all who reached out to GCM. Their replies don’t suggest to me that they plan to stop offering Target on eBay. On the other hand, GCM has said that they only process GCs for eBay and eBay decides what they sell. I’m much less optimistic that Target .com will ever sell electronic eBay GCs again because the product page is just gone. And despite GCM telling their customers that they hope to offer electronic delivery of GCs and to look out for that feature, I don’t think it’s going to happen. It just seems to me that PPDG has some exclusive arrangement with eBay to be its only digital GCs seller.
I figure this lengthy post should make up for my silence this week. Anyway, hope this Bonus was productive for everyone even though things are up in the air with Target and GCM and PPDG is being a PITA. (So many acronyms in this post!)
ETA: By some miracle, I just got another order through PPDG for $500 in BB GCs and $50 Bucks. That's it for me for this promotion. I don't want to push my luck any further. I've banked $250 Bucks in two days (and $25 Ebates), and am at $466.50 on my account for this quarter.
