Don't hide the secret Disney fund in any item your spouse will sell at a yard/garage sale:

Michigan mom Tracy Holmes was elated when she sold three DVDs for $10 at her garage sale.

A week later, when her husband asked what happened to his copy of the movie "Sin City," she told him what she thought was good news. What her husband, Fred, revealed next left her breathless: He had secretly hidden $1,200 in cash in the DVD case for a family trip to Disney World.

"My kids are pretty upset about the whole thing, and I feel just heartsick," the mom of three from Belleville told The Ann Arbor News.

Now the Holmes clan is hoping the man who came to the garage sale and got more than he bargained for will come forward.

Oh, how terrible. I've hidden money in something we need for the trip so I know we won't be getting rid of it. I feel so terrible for them. That's alot of money.

Oh wow, that really stinks for that family! I hope the guy is honest and gives back the money!

:scared1: that's awful! I wouldn't wish that on anyone. But...hello!...bank?

I would have to give back the money.........in fact, I would have given it back as soon as I realized it was in the dvd case!

Wow that is terrible. I dont let my wife get rid of anything without asking me first.

Oh no!!

I told DH this story and he looked at me and smiled and said "See honey.. Dont ever try to sell my stuff at your next garage sale" :rotfl: :lmao:

Wow that is terrible. I dont let my wife get rid of anything without asking me first.

I adopted that same philosophy in the early 1990’s when my wife informed me she sold a box of old vinyl 33 rpm record albums for $20. When I asked if she remembered to remove my 6 original/first press Beatles albums, her response was, what Beatles albums?

Oh no! Poor family! That would be awful...

My question though is why would she sell her dh's stuff without asking him? And would $1200 really lay flat in a DVD case? I would think it would bow it and make it feel much heavier?

A couple years after DH & I got married his parents and grandparents bought us a new mattress & boxspring. The thing is they did it without our knowledge while we were out of town on vacation. They never mentioned it before we left or during any of the calls we made to them while we were out of town. When we got home I walked in our bedroom and went to put one of the suitcases on the bed and when I flung the suitcase it didn't clear the bed - it was much higher then it was before. Huh, I thought. :confused3 That's when DH & I noticed it was a new bed. Good thing we didn't hide any money in our mattress like some people do!!

I did something similar many, many, many years ago. I bought one of those "real spray cans" that was hollowed out (I think it was hairspray) and it had my personal spare money in it, left over after drawing out my PERS. My DH accidentally pitched it (it felt empty, didn't spray anything, ect) as he thought it was simply empty. There was probably about $200.00 left (we had paid my car and some other bills off already) in it. It was a hard lesson learned!

How many times do you buy a movie and life gets in the way, and before you know it, weeks have passed before you finally get around to it? Even if the buyer is honest, he may not have a clue to the treasure he is sitting on!

OMGoodness....that is heartwrenching.

That is why we have a big Poland Spring bottle from the water coolers and we have a Disney Pic on it, so there is NOOOO MISTAKE!!

I hope the guy who bought it was not a person passing through and cannot remember where he bought it!!

As sad as this story is, I think this is worse?

Exactly why I don't hide money in strange places. You never know what your spouse is going to do.

Wouldn't you look at the DVD to see if it was scratched before you bought it? I would. I have a bad feeling the money is not getting returned:guilty:

The first thing I thought when I read the article was “keep your money in a bank or safe, dummy.” At least it would earn some interest even if it is pennies. $1,200 would also be insured through FDIC or ASI in a bank (or credit union).

Second, if you are saving for a Disney trip wouldn’t you AND your spouse know about it?
