A little suprised this hasnt already been addressed here, and I am going to attempt to pose the question w/o offending anyone, but does anyone see an issue with Disney allowing/promoting same sex wedings in there parks and on their cruises? It would seem to me, that they are going out on a big limb here. Heres the link for those who want to read the story.

How so, well there is a national debate about weather or not these unions should be recognized. Only a couple of states allow the practice. Disney, is, by virtue of this policy, endorsing the practice. You dont see that as going out on a limb? I am not trying to say they should/or shouldnt, but a company that was bashed for coming up with buena vista in the 80's so they could make 'R' rated movies without using the disney label, puts themselves in a precarious position with regards to family values.

Maybe they think it's time that Family Values takes on a more modern meaning. I personally have no problem with it. There are all types of families so why not let them have the same privilages? (sp?) I tend to think more on the if 2 males/females have children and visit WDW that is their family. If they want a ceremony to celebrate it I think that's great. Vow renewals aren't any type of recognizable ceremony legally but people still do it. I am not starting a debate but my dh and I were talking aout this last night and we both think it's great. Everyone should be able to celebrate their family whatever it may be. JMHO.princess:

I don't think it is anything about family values. I think that it is all about $$$ If Disney can make money on them, they will do it.

There are ALL types of families!!! Glad that Disney recognizes this - hopefully others will be as open-minded.

Oh- I just wanted to add that Disney will take your money for admission and accomodations. I don't see how they can deny you this.

Not sure why is SHOULD bother me. If my relationship with DH doesn't bother anyone then why should someone else's be of concern to me? I say good for Disney for not judging what love is. :thumbsup2

The bottom line is that Disney is a public accommodation that will rent space and services to anyone for any lawful purpose. Unless the assembly of gay people and their families and friends is illegal (and the First Amendment guarantees freedom of assembly), Disney could be sued for NOT allowing such a gathering.

They are not permitted to exclude people from renting their facilities and services because they don't like their politics. Going out on THAT limb would cost Disney millions of dollars in legal fees and jury awards.

It is a business, afterall!

It bothers me that people assume companies should take a moral stand. In a free market economy...that is our responsibility.

If people don't like the fact that Disney allows gay weddings feel free not to attend the wedding or WDW for that matter.

Woo hoo its about time!!!!
We have a very regular DIS'er that will be taking advantage of it, they are very excited, this is always been their dream and I couldnt be happier for them!

What they were doing before was saying you had to have a valid marraige license in order to have a ceremony there.

What they have done with this policychange, which I find both interesting and opens them up for much criticism, is to say, well marry anyone, regardless if you have a license.

I think its the stand they have taken and the distinction which they have made that could make this an issue. Judges that have taken this issue on in states that forbid the practice have caused much controvery, to think that Disney will get a pass for essentially doing the same thing, regardless of your politics, is ignoring exactly what the new policy is about.

I am not being critical of Disney, nor trying to stamp this out, merely pointing out exactly how far out on that limb I think they have climbed.

Technically its going to be a commitment ceremony, which people have all over the world, so I dont think its that big a deal as far as laws and such.
Yes folks are going to get their undies in a knot about this, but those that would boycott Disney because of this prob already do so due to Gay Days.
Im excited about this new change.

Disney has always been ahead of its time accepting of all kinds of families. They were one of the first to offeremployee benefits to life partners be it same sex or opposit sex partnerships accepting that our modern world does not get defined by sexual orientation. This benefits not just those who are homosexual but also people getting together to raise families together... 2 widowed men who want to have a stay at home parent and 1 working even though the men are not sexually committed their families get the work benefits. It also supports the man and woman who want to live in a committed relationship but have no interest in getting a legal marriage.

I think its wonderful!

Well technically, their gay days were unaffiliated with disney directly. They simply took verry tolerant attitude towards it and thats what got them in troulble with the southern baptists.

What they are advertising is a Fairy Tale Wedding, not a committment ceremony. Not trying to argue semantics, but you know that is where they are going to face their criticism, as well as the Fairy Tale Wedding being conducted sans marraige license, which, IS taking a stand on the issue on Disney's part if you ask me. Im not against them for doing this, personnally I think everyone has a right to be miserable and give half their stuff to their ex, its just a very forward thinking policy on their part, and because their Disney, I think they could face a big backlash.

It is a business decision period. They are not making a 'stand', just realizing how they can make more $$$.

Exactly and ,those who see it as anything more, are going to have a problem with it no matter what. And I am not sure what effect it has on anyone who isn't involved with the ceremonies anyway.

Nope, I don't have an issue with it at all. The only issue I have is with people who try to make an issue out of it...

Disney is not claiming that people have any legal rights changed after one of these ceremonies. The article points out that a legal marriage license was needed before, but that they will allow non-licensed ceremonies now.

BRAVO!!!!

I'm very glad that Disney is allowing people to celebrate their love regardless of the make up of their family.

People forget that not so many years ago, interracial marriages were frowned upon at best, illegal at worst. I don't see gay couples as any different. They are two people who want to make a pledge of commitment to each other, and do so in celebration with friends and families. For those who have a problem with it, just keep passing by--you weren't invited anyhow!
