Disney DVD's Flooded in Katrina

I was very surprised to see a Katrina forum here on the DisBoards. Excellent!

My home was in Lakeview, very near to the infamous 17th Street Canal breach. My street had 11 feet of water, and 6 feet of it was inside my home. I am in the process of considering my rebuild. I do have to say, I really considered taking my first $2,000 of FEMA money and running to Disneyworld with it. It would have been perfect. Everyone else in the country would have been in the first weeks of school, and the parks would have been much less crowded. I was overruled by more sensible minds.

To my question. I lost every DVD (and every other possession) I own and have been trying to replace many of the Disney movies my kids love. I did try to clean them, but many are ruined and unwatchable. The three that are eluding me the most are The Lion King, Sleeping Beauty, and Beauty and the Beast. I know they are in the vault which I think is ridiculous. I waited seven years for a non-VCR copy of Beauty and the Beast and I guess I may have to wait seven more. I wish Disney would keep their product available all the time. Is there anywhere you can think of that I might find these for under the $60 the sellers on Amazon and E-Bay want? Any help would be appreciated.

Finally, just a bit of a screed about the vault stuff. Disney's policy really encourages scarcity of their product. Movies are snapped up by sellers, held, and then offered at confiscatory prices later on. Besides this, it prevents every other generation of children from seeing their great movies. My daughter is four and watched Beauty and the Beast and Sleeping Beauty constantly. She is firmly in the "I want to be a princess" phase, and it is adorable. By the time I am likely to find these movies again she will be close to a pre-teen. I just find it ridiculous that I cannot replace these films that have meant so much to her because Disney decides to hold them hostage until they can trot them out years later, again with the message of, "Better get it now, or you won't have a chance later." It's as manipulative as anything I've ever seen.

Anyway, if anyone has any idea where these films may be found on DVD without paying an arm and a leg I'd love to know.

PS--First post but a long time lurker here.

My local video store sells used copies of movies...I know that you really want brand-new/in-box DVDs, but if you bought used ones at least you'd have seomthing to watch in the short-term(while awaiting those detested vault DVD releases)...

I'd also suggest posting your request for ideas on some of the other forums, perhaps the Community Board, the Collectors' forum or Disney for Families forum.

I remember the last time we were at WDW, one of the CMs had "Chalmette LA" on her name badge. My heart stopped...I worked as a volunteer helping people searching for family members missing because of Katrina and Chalmette was so very hard-hit.

Good luck in your quest,
agnes!

My wife is from Chalmette, and her entire family lived in St. Bernard parish. It is just so sad. They are scattered everywhere. You could not find a more close knit community than that one. I really hope the parish comes back. They did not have flooding from levee breaks like I had. They had straight out storm surge. My father in law's house (and everyone else there) had this thick layer of gooey marsh mud inside the house.

My house is in Lakeview too - we also had about 6 feet of water. My Disney DVDs were soaked, but out of about 40 only 5 no longer play. Of course, The Little Mermaid was one of them, which is one of the expensive ones.

Here's what I did: I dipped them into a bucket of soapy water, then into a bucket of clean water, then dried them with a soft cloth. I then wrapped them in paper towels and let them sit for a few hours to dry out. I couldn't save any of the cases, but the DVDs work. Boy, did they stink when we were getting them out of the cases! We did this about 7 weeks after the storm and they were still soaking wet.

Good luck, it might be worth a try.

I live in Slidell, LA across the lake from New Orleans. When we evacuated, I had already been packing things to take the day before. I was only taking the things most important to me. My daughters had all the photos and I had ALL the Disney DVDs and VHS tapes!! I know it's crazy, but I knew you could replace anything else in the house...but not Disney movies in the vault. My husband thought I was nuts, but I am one happy camper right now. We were lucky. Only trees down around our home, no major damage.

Actualy, as someone without young children, I was not aware that these things can't be purchased anytime in the future. Good luck to all of you looking for replacements.

This is something that I would never have thought about. I hope you find what you are looking for without having to pay an arm and a leg for it.

I have been slowly replacing my copies of the disney classics on VHS as they come out on DVD. I would be happy to part with my VHS versions to a person who lost thier collections in the storm. I know it is not DVD's but it is the best I can do. And I promise if you live in SE louisiana you cant beat the price (wink wink)

You may ask why is a guy like Disluv doing this. Because disluv is all about showing the Disney LUV. Anyway the real reason is I live in Ponchatoula, LA which is just north of N.O. by about 30- min. And while we did not get hit hard at all. I can just imagine what would have happened if that monster moved 10 miles to the west. So if you are interested you can send me a private message and then we will see what happens
