We ordered a large amount this past Christmas on behalf of several family members who wanted to contribute to the souvenir and treat budget for my kids and neice. Many of them included a few dollars with their gift. For us, this was a great way to educate the kids more about money and how much things cost. It also helped the kids to think about their purchases and what the item meant to them as they knew that their money was limited, and not as easy as bugging Mom and Dad into whipping out the plastic. We kept track of each kid's money in separate little envelopes - they loved having DD. As a large purchase with the shipping shared by many, it wasn't a bit deal at all. However, as a method for savings, you are losing a lot by doing several transactions. Why don't you buy US money instead (some ATM even dispense US cash), and then when you are ready to buy DD, use that money to buy your money order you will have to get if you are mailing your order. Having DD doesn't get you any perks or anything, it is just like cash anywhere in the world. Some just get a kick out of it, that's all. (Yes, that's me, and I saved an unwrinkled $1 DD for my scrapbook).
