Does anyone know if you can buy the ballons, light-up thingys, and stuff like that with them?

Yes, you can.

However they do not give change back.

For example if your purchase is $4.62 and you pay with $5.00 Disney bill you will not get change back.

Same also holds true at most of the popcorn stands etc.

Ok thanks, this is good to know.

I have never had this happen. Is it a new policy? DD (4) has always used Disney Dollars to shop and as always gotten the proper change. This just seams wrong. I buy them dollar for dollar. I know disney hopes that you keep them as souviners so they keep thier money - but to keep $.38 or some odd cents on every dollar seams wrong. If this is what they are going to do now dd will be shopping with real money.

This was a good question, but I hope Mom to a Princess is right.

?????
We have used DD at many a popcorn stand and have always gotten change back. You know "the baggie full of coins" that you lug back home.;)

They do give change back-and in real money. I'm not sure where that OP heard or didn't get change, but it is something they have to do.

We have gotten change back in the past so I hope this isn't a new trend. Most of the time the CM's don't seem to care if they get Disney Dollars or real money.

We were just there two weeks ago and I had $350 in Disney Dollars that I had bought over time to save up for the trip. We used them EVERYWHERE and always got change back. It was in real money though.

Here's another voice in the chorus to say that my exact experience has been getting change in real money, both paper AND coin, from both vendors and shops. A few days before we left for our May 8, 2005 vacation, I went to my local Disney store and bought over $100 in the then-new (50th anniversary) Disney Dollars for each of my 2 kids, and at WDW they were very proud to spend their money on everything rather than have me charge it to the room. We NEVER received less than the proper amount of change. This was in May of 2005. So, where did the "other" information come from???

Just to clarify for everyone. I was most concerned about the street vendors that walk around.

I had no doubts that the stores and even most of the food carts would take them. I just wasn't sure about the these walker types because I had read something once about them being third-party contractors with Disney. So, I wasn't sure if they would want to go to the trouble of having to exchange their DD for real dollars.

In the past dd (4) has bought ballons ect.. for the vendors that walk around and has never had a problem with getting change. I always have her give as close the amount as possible so her change normally is only coins. DD normally only has ones and fives in Disney Dollars. She earns them by doing things around the house. This being said we have never once encountered somewhere at Disney where they would not take Disney Dollars!

I hope this helps!
