Disney Dollar Question

I've read conflicting info that I hope you all can clear up.

When exchanging Disney Dollars back to REAL dollars, do I need a receipt from the original purchase? What if they are given as gifts, and I dont personally purchase any?

do they need to be exchanged AT WDW or can I do it when I get home at Disney Store?

It depends on the store and maybe the CM. The last time I exchanged DD I had to go to 3 stores to get it done. The CM at one store would not do it. The CM at the second store would only exchange to ones purchased there. The CM at the third store said it didn't matter where they were purchased as long as you have a receipt they should be exchanged.
