Disney Dollar Question

In all my trips I've never used/purchased Disney Dollars.

I am trying to save money for an upcoming trip/trips. Can I buy them at my local Disney Store? Do they have different designs, and can I pick the ones I like?

Can I used Disney dollars for food, even TS?

Are they dollar for dollar or do they actually cost additional money. My trip is in May. I've already got airline tickets and the room covered. But I need spending and food ing money and have no saved so far. Looks buying Disney dollars is the only way for me to put aside this money.

I actually just bought Disney Dollars for my Nephew at the Disney Store by Philadelphia. We're going in August and instead of giving him cash for his birthday, I gave him Disney Dollars to save and use when we're in the world.

I think they come in $1, $5, $10 and $20 Denominations. The designs are preset. I forget which character is on all of them.

They can be used anywhere on Disney Property for anything and yes, they are Dollar for Dollar.

I have $1 and $5...Dumbo on the $1 and Goofy on the $5...not sure who is on the rest. I too bought mine at the Disney store...yes dollar for dollar... for a birthday gift. I think I was told that you can also order them online but you then have to pay shipping and handling...so not sure if I would be willing to go that route if possible to make it to the Disney store.

Just be careful with your Disney Dollars! Like cash, they are not replaceable if they are lost or stolen. I always just take what I think I'll need each day and lock the rest in the safe at the hotel.

buy at Disney Store....yes
characters....Mickey or Sorcerer Mickey on $1's, Goofy on $5's, and Minnie, Donald or Stitch on the $10's. Not all stores will have every design. Ask if they have options
where to spend....anywhere and everywhere on Disney property that takes cash. Carts, TS meals, resorts, shops, and so on

There are no $20's as mentioned by a previous poster.... I believe you can get $50's at WDW. Most of the current Disney Dollars are decorated for the 50th Anniversary celebration.

DD$ can be used at any Disney-owned establishment in the parks and resorts, including shops, carts, restaurants, counter-service food places, and even to pay off your resort bill. In fact, even most of the non-Disney places at Downtown Disney will accept them just like cash.

DD$ are exchanged 1-to-1 with US dollars, no extra costs or fees, unless you buy them by mail order, in which case there will be a shipping fee.

Current denominations are $1, $5, $10, and $50, although the $50 only seem to be available at WDW. Originally, there were going to be two different $50 notes; one would be normal and sold at Disney Stores, while the other would be a special edition only available at WDW. To date I have never seen either of them at my local Disney Store, but I would guess that at least one of the two versions are available at WDW.

The current designs are specials for the Happiest Celebration on Earth. I personally thing they're beautiful works of art, but then I collect DD$ anyway. Some Disney Stores do have limited supplies of some of the older designs, but mostly you just have to take what you can get, much the same way that you can go into a market and ask for quarters from a specific state in your change, but you are not guaranteed to get them.

I have used DD$ several times as a method of saving for my Disney trips. It works well for me because you can only spend them at Disney stores, parks, and resorts, but I never buy anything at my local Disney store. i will typically go to the Disney store each payday and pick up about $20 worth of DD$, usually two tens, and put them aside for my upcoming trip. By the time my trip comes around, I usually have enough saved for at least my food budget, and sometimes for other parts of the budget as well.

I like the little ritual of making the pilgrimage to the Disney store every two weeks (mine is about 20-25 minutes away), getting my DD$, and maybe grabbibng a bite at the mall food court. It's a tiny dose of Disney Magic that I can experience on a regular basis while enduring the sheer agony of a long wait till my next WDW trip.
