how can there be this many ideas on what to do?

Shut down your rig. Start up with this key-combo pressed until you hit the Open Firmware prompt: option-command(apple)-O-F

At the OpenFirmware prompt, type this:

reset-nvram [enter]
set-defaults [enter]
reset-all [enter]

Your mac will automatically restart, immediately keep following key combo pressed: option-command-P-R to reset the Parameter RAM, your mac restarts a second time.

Right after the startup chime, press command-S to enter single-user mode. Sh!tloads of text will appear, after which you'll see the command-line prompt. Type this:

/sbin/fsck -y [enter]

which is the "verbose" equivalent of repairing your drive with Disk Utility, with the added bonus that you don't need to boot from another disk to get things done.

Fsck will examine your disk and repair any detected damage, after which it'll display the message "Volume appears to be fine" OR "Volume structure has been modified". In the second case retype the fsck command (hint: hit command-up arrow to avoid retyping last command), repeat as needed, until you get the "volume appears to be fine" message.

Usually, fsck can repair most common damage, otherwise you have to resort to a 3rd party tool, DiskWarrior seems to be the cream of the crop.

When done with the fsck routine, type: reboot [enter]. Your Mac will restart.

After logging in, open Disk Utility; under the "First Aid" tab, click on the "Repair Disk Permissions". Let Disk Utility do its Voodoo.

Yeah, this is all on that screen I was talking about where I get the error message. This and the article talk about entering text when it reaches this "prompt", but mine never gets there.

Is this you posting here ? If not there problem sounds almost like yours and they posted tonight. If it isn't you maybe someone over there will have a suggestion for you.

Becky

Nope, that's not me. But I've found several entries just like this (obviously a problem Apple should be made aware of!) and all the suggestions are what I"m trying to do... with no luck.

After the startup bong hit the shift key and hold it down for 3-5 minutes until login screen appears that says safe mode. If it gets to this point then do a restart.

Ohhhh, no. I just realized that yeah, sure I can give up this document that took all day. At this point I'll just fly by the seat of my pants and pray that I just pass the CST.

Then I realize ALL my notes from the semester are here, as well as Kyle's residency stuff.

So glad you all can't hear the crap coming out of my mouth in between screams

Ok, so really it's all in my head. But I'm REALLY glad you all aren't in there.

I can't get it to boot in safe mode, just single-user mode. And then whatever I try still doesn't work :(

do you have this?

NortonSystem

System Works? Yes. But it's on the computer. Or on CD, but I can't put a CD in because the startup/reboot CD is in. And I can't get that out, becuase it won't start up. :earseek:

there should be a manual eject - let me see if I can figure that out!

I think I'm done for now. God only knows what I've done to the insides of my computer, and still no progress.

I think I'm going to just skip my AM class tomorrow (our last one, maybe not such a good idea) and get to the apple store. I hope and pray they can at least make it work. I'm sure I've already erased my files by now.... :worried: :headache:

I swear, if I make it through the next week (and then pass my classes).............. it will be a miracle. :sad1:

Thank you so much everyone for your patience, research, and help.

You all really are a support group :grouphug:

Did you ever check for an airport card?

It's under the keyboard, just pop the keyboard up (you may have to unlock the screw/numlock light) then pop out the air port card and disconnect the antenna.

Faulty airport cards do funny things, including not booting or powering up.

I didn't, because i was afriad to take it out. I suppose they could just put it back in if I can't....

Glynis- How are you feeling??? Do you think your in total recovery or do you crave???

Thanks for asking. I'm feeling better every day. I do fine with breakfast and lunch (mostly because I've found the best yogurt smoothies that only have 5 grams of sugar per bottle). I do the yogurt for breakfast and lunch, and I'm getting a bit more adventurous for dinner. There are days when I just don't feel like eating at all, and then there are days when I want chips and salsa really badly. I'm learning to deal with those cravings though. In reality, my body is always full, so I don't really WANT the food, but my head thinks it does.

My new total is 36 pounds down as of this morning. DH says he wouldn't be surprised if I hit 50 pounds by Christmas.

It's a very emotional time, as I'm finding clothes that I thought I'd never wear again, and seeing them fit me now. Also, I haven't been able to wear my wedding ring for about a year, and now it's loose on my finger. I cried and cried when DH put it on my finger again. I really feel like I took my life back. I have more energy to play with my kids, and I'm enjoying it, too.

I have no regrets about the surgery, and would recommend it to anyone looking into it. I'll even recommend my doctor if you all want to make a trip to good old Utah.

That seems like an easier task, for sure :)

I got conflicting info on this

bad news would be:

there is no manual eject but you could try this:
First... try the old trick of holding the mouse/trackpad button down, while booting the iBook. Keep holding until you hear the drive work, could take a couple of minutes.

Good enws would be:
Carefully insert the end of a straightened paper clip into the emergency eject hole on the drive tray.
