We just booked our 1st cruise on DCL for Jan 6 Eastern Caribbean 7 day. I was not planning on using points because of what I thought was poor value. Instead, when I priced it out for Cat 9, the cost was 3600 for my family of 4 vs. using 387 points. Surprisingly, this was close to $10 a point which was what i was hoping to rent these points for.

Interestingly, when I priced out a 7 day cruise in Dec, the price was only a few hundred more dollars. However, using points would've required more than 560 points, making the points worth less then $7 a point.

The point of this post is that using points for DCL is not always a bad value for your points if you can cruise in value season.

Enjoy your cruise!

We also feel we got a very good value on our first 3 night DCL cruise back in '04 in November, and the weather was perfect! I know that they have "upped" the point value for that time of year the last time I looked, but we'll keep looking for good buys that we can take advantage of.

Bobbi :)

We look at it another way. Disney points are paid for and it's less cash we have to put out and can use for excursions, etc. We also don't want to go through the hassel of renting them out. Other people don't consider it a hassel and feel it's worth it. So for us, point value is less important than convenience.

That is very interesting. Thank you for posting this.

DH and I used points for a 4 day cruise in Jan, I used the least amount putting us in cat 11. I was happily surprised when I received my paperwork that we were upgraded to a cat. 8. I also ran the numbers and it came out to be a better deal for us when using points vs. cash. Not to mention that I didn't have the hassle of renting them out.

This is likely because many of the early booking discounts are already gone. But it does illustrate the reason that you should look at each situation individually. IMO, the price would have to be far better using points that using cash and possibly renting my points to pay for it if necesssary. IMO, there are simply too many negatives including cancellation limitations.

Looking at the points charts, looks like the cheapest for 4 for a Cat 9 for that time is 420 points up to 482 or so, assuming all are a charge and depending on the age of the kids.
