I have been thinking about doing one of the Cruises with my DVC Points. As I understand it, the points quoted are for a typical outside room. Has anyone tried to upgrade to a balcony or suite? Same goes for traveling through Holland America for the Alaskan Cruises. Have any of you been able to book a better room?

When you book a Disney Cruise Line cruise you will be able to book a wide variety of cabin categories. These include Category 11 - a standard, inside cabin, all the way up to Category 4 - an outside cabin with balcony and an extra bed (which allows the cabin to sleep 5 instead of the usual 4). It has been said that you can also book a Category 3 cabin which includes concierge services, however the points for this are not listed on the DVC point chart and you must call to find out the number. The point costs vary by cabin type and time of year you travel.

I have no experience with booking a HAL Alaskan cruise, although it is something we hope to do someday.

We booked a veranda mini-suite on HAL this past summer on points. I don't remember the amount, but they will quote you a points amount up to that cabin level. If you want a full suite or the penthouse suite, you can't do that on points.
