DVC includes several options for using points at other than the DVC resorts themselves. One of those options is a cruise on the
DCL.
That said, if you plan to use DVC mainly for cruising (or any of the other non-DVC options), be advised that there are other ways to enjoy those options that are less expensive than using DVC points. The best/most economical use of DVC points is for a stay at one of the DVC resorts.
The total number of points required to reserve the rooms at a DVC resort for a year must remain the same - they cannot increase. For example, If DVC raises the number of points to book a room in June, there must be a decrease in the number required to book a room at some other time. The net effect of the change must be zero for the year. You do not have that same protection for the non-DVC options. The cost of those options can (and have) gone up. In some years, the increase has been surpising large!
Cruising and using the non-DVC options can make for a nice change of pace. However, if you plan to do it often, you may want to consider buying less points and paying cash for the non-DVC options.
I don't know if Disney has ever considered a DVC for cruisers - i.e., selling points for a cruise ship like they do for a resort. Wonder how much points would cost for that???
