Disney Cruise Line v. Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas comparison

We just got off a 5 night cruise on Anthem of the Seas to Bermuda. This was our first Royal Caribbean after 4 Disney Cruises in less than 3 years. I want to do a mini trip report but from the perspective of someone who has only cruised with DCL. Usually I try not to compare and enjoy all our vacations, but I know with the prices of DCL increasing, trying other lines is on a lot of people minds. After only cruising on DCL one naturally wonders how other lines stack up.
If I was solely doing a Royal Caribbean or DCL trip report you would not see much criticism or complaining, as overall we loved all our cruises. But because I want to compare and contrast our experiences on both, some negative may get pointed out.
Ultimately these will be my family's experiences and opinions, but I hope this will help others decide if they want to sway from DCL, or maybe not for a few years yet.

Thanks...very interested in this. We tried Carnival and will never cruise them again, but would love to hear about Royal.

A little background, at this point we are a family of 3 - myslelf, DH and DS8. We love Disney, especially me and DS, but I know secretly DH loves it more than he admits. We have gone to WDW about 5 years in a row, always stay on site. Exactly 3 years ago, I was taking a class with a lady (in her late 30's now) who used to be a cast member on the 2 classic Disney ships when they first started sailing. She said seeing how we love WDW so much we should try DCL, it's absolutely amazing. I didn't think cruising was for us period. I really had no desire to go on a cruise.
However, an opportunity came up to go on a 3 night Disney Magic cruise and I thought, OK, if we hate it it's only 3 days. I don't think I have to tell anyone on these boards what happened next... yep within 7 months we were on the Disney Fantasy. Then 10 months later we went on the Magic again, and last Fall we cruised yet again on the Fantasy.
We love everything about DCL, but after taking 4 Disney cruises fairly close together, I thought ok, all the entertainment and dining is starting to repeat. Plus we wanted to go to Bermuda and also St.Maarten, both destinations not offered by DCL at this time (I know Bermuda will be next year).
We had a few days available to take a shorter vacation, so we decided to book a 5 night sailing to Bermuda on Royal's Anthem of the Seas. Anthem is one of Royal's bigger ships, comparable in size to Disney Fantasy. It's a 2 year old ship in their "Quantum" class and it sails from NYC to Bermuda, Bahamas as well as longer sailings that include St. Maarten and Puerto Rico.
We booked about 2.5 months out. Let's start the comparison with the booking process then.

BOOKING - Most of our cruises including this one we booked through a travel agent, and each time we had full access to our reservation online. We booked VGT fares and on both lines we got assigned nice staterooms in a higher category then we paid. The main difference is that Royal assigned our stateroom within hours of booking, and with Disney we had to wait until about 10 days from sailing.

ONLINE ACCESS TO CRUISE RESERVATION - There is a lot more to pre-book with Royal, and their "Cruise Planner" took some getting used to, you had to be careful to log-out or you'd be locked out for a while if you tried to log back in. After I got used to it, no problems. You could pre-book different activities, shows, specialty dining, drink packages, internet and excursions via the cruise planner. Anything you reserved you had to fully pay for right away. You could cancel items up to 3 days prior to sailing. It pays to check the cruise planner daily, as different things go on sale from time to time. Also, since we booked fairly last minute, some activities were booked up already but openings appeared here and there. There was no option to register your children in kids programming prior to cruise.
All in all I liked having the option to pay for certain things in advance and overall found Disney's and Royal's online cruise planners equally useful and easy to navigate.
We did buy the deluxe drink package which included all beer, wine and drinks up to $13 per glass, freshed squeezed juices, smoothies, pop, specialty coffees and bottled water. We are not big drinkers but each have a few a day when on vacation and I mainly wanted the drink package to try it... yes I did it in the name of research;)
Just like with DCL, as our cruise got closer we got periodic emails from Royal to get us excited about the cruise.

I will stop here so I can transfer some pics onto my computer, I will try to post a few later on.

If anyone has some specific questions so far please ask :flower1:

BOARDING -

Royal Caribbean encourages guest to complete an online check-in, same as Disney. All you do is print your SeaPass and also print the luggage tags. There are no fancy cruise documents sent by Royal like Disney does. Overall online check-in was fairly straightforward, you can even upload your own photos to expedite the check-in at the pier. I forgot to do the photo part and honestly it only took a few seconds more for the staff at the port to take the photos themselves.
We arrived at the Bayonne, NJ cruise port a bit later than we were planning due to some traffic, I think it was about 1:30 pm. Lots of people still arriving. We pulled over to the curb to drop our luggage off with the porters, took maybe 30 seconds. They directed us to the covered parking. There was a parking attendant directing you to your parking spot, we quickly parked and walked over to the terminal, it's very very close - comparable to port parking at Port Canaveral. Once inside the terminal we saw Royal Caribbean staff behind ipad posts. There must have been 8 of them, each checking guests in. We chose a line with one family in front of us. Once they were done, it was our turn. The staff member asked us the health questions, nothing to fill out. Then took our photos and told us we can head on to the ship. No room key was given at this time. SeaPass card is the Disney cruise equivalent to Key to the World Card. We were advised our SeaPass cards will be waiting in our room for us, one outside the door and the rest inside. From there we proceeded through security and were shown to head up the escalator to board the ship. The entire check-in process took maybe 10 minutes. My husband looked at me and said: "That's it?" Everyone we encountered at this point was very friendly, hi-fiving our son, wishing us a wonderful cruise and welcoming aboard. When we walked up the escalator there was the ship! On the way we were stopped by an Adventure Ocean (kids club) staff member who put on a security wrist band on our DS. We were told that in case of emergency the Youth staff will bring the children to the muster station which is printed on the wrist band. This band was nothing like one given on DCL. We think that putting those bands on the kids before you enter the ship was great, but in our opinion they should have also had the option to register your kid in Adventure Ocean at this time. More on this later. Overall, we found the boarding process faster and easier on Anthem than Disney but... it could be when we arrived there was a lot less people than at 10 or 11 am.
Although Anthem of the Seas says they "guarantee" from curb to ship in 10 minutes, and in our case this was true.
Once on the ship our sea pass cards we printed at home were scanned again and we were on our own....not really knowing where to go next. There is no announcing families which is fine but less personal. It would have been nice if there was someone like on Disney telling you where you can go to eat, etc. Instead after the easy check-in process, once we boarded we found the area chaotic.

SHIP DECOR and APPEARANCE - Anthem of the Seas is a beautiful ship. Modern and elegant, definitely not gaudy-looking. We loved it, but also realize that it didn't have a lot of kid appeal. At least not initially. My kid didn't care, he loved the glass elevators, huge chandelier that flickered to the beat of your heart, Disney or not he was pretty excited.

Here are some pics of the Royal Esplanade deck 4 which is where we boarded. This area had all sorts of bars, pub, shops and cafes. It actually spans over 2 decks, 4 & 5.

Also forgot to add... by every elevator on every deck, you could find a digital "Wayfinder" which was an interactive screen to help you find your way around the ship, and see what is going on at any given time. You touched the screen to activate it. It was very neat, and in that regard Anthem of the Seas is a very technologically advanced ship, much more than any of the Disney Cruise ships. We liked this aspect, although I kept going back and forth... do I like the more traditional look of a Disney Cruise ship? I didn't make my mind up right away...Anthem of the Seas 222.JPG

we did our first non DCL cruise on the Oasis for podcast cruise last december. definitely things we liked, but it was a one and done for us. very shopping mall, very generic, although "fancy". will be interested to read your thoughts with you having kids!

My husband and I have cruised with Carnival and Royal Caribbean. We both love Carnival and have had such great experiences! Royal Caribbean always has large, new ships to lure us but the food we felt was terrible quality compared to Carnival!

We are now also new parents, our daughter is 5 months old and we are planning a family friendly vacation for next year when she's around 1.5 years old. Since I'm doing all the research, I'm leaning towards a Disney cruise! We hear everything is top notch! My concerns are child care for young babies on the Disney cruise lines as well as adult geared entertainment for my husband and I to enjoy!

Any advice from any Disney Cruiser would be much appreciated!

We LOVE the Oasis class ships! The shows are all very good (family friendly). The 3 pools put Disney's single dirty people soup pool to shame! The splash area and children's pool are so much better and I have heard the adult pool area is much better than Disney as well. Love that they offer buffet dinner (not so much a fan of Disney's drawn out dinners and waiters begging for an excellent rating).

Fun activities, a great parade with performers and the Dream Works characters, delicious chocolate breakfast with the characters, etc., etc. Our daughter loves the rock climbing walls and can't wait until she's tall enough to do the Flow Rider (standing).

My 7 year old daughter and I sailed alone on the Allure in February. I loved that she could join me for the specialty dining (unlike Disney) and the food was amazing. We never do the specialty dining but got a super deal. All of the restaurants were excellent and one of them had the best food I've ever had on a cruise.

And best of all - so much space for all those people. We have felt more crowded on the Magic. As far as the shopping mall - it's one deck which is easy to avoid if it's not your thing. Actually ALL of our cruises on RCI have been great - cannot say that about Disney. We'd sail with RCI in a heartbeat. To get back on Disney, it needs to be something a little different for us. We're winding down our last 2 Disney cruises this year and will stick with cruise lines that offer better itineraries and an overall better fit for our family. But as I always say...there are enough cruise options to keep us all happy!

Next up: Stateroom
Anthem of the Seas is a newer ship, so I was expecting modern, fresh decor.
Still, I was a bit worried as we absolutely loved our Disney staterooms, especially the last one category 4b - a larger verandah room.
First walking to our stateroom, I thought... oh oh.. no decorated doors. No cute little portholes on the doors. No Disney music in the hallway... the doors were solid dark wood tones, nothing nautical about them. It's a very clean look, but also a bit dark for my taste. The odd door had a single door magnet on it, be it Happy Birthday or Bonne Voyage - you could order these before sailing from in-room gifts, similar to DCL. You use your SeaPass (KTTW) to open the door, or you could buy a wow band. Sort of similar to a magic band, I believe they were $4.95 to buy. We didn't as I didn't like the design.
Once inside the stateroom, I was relieved as it was actually very nice. We had a verandah stateroom, category D2. It was 198 sq feet plus 55 sq foot balcony. I would say length-wise it was like Disney but it seemed more narrow.
Immediately I noticed a couple of hairs on the bathroom floor and being the OCD nerd I am, I wiped down all surfaces with disinfectant wipes. They were still clean after so our stateroom was clean, but like I said.. couple hairs.. some dust on the glasses by the fridge. It was little things like this that told me.. ok this is NOT DCL.
I'm sure others would never notice this, but after cruising with the Mouse what can I say.. my expectations were high. I also checked out the toiletries they had in the bathroom. Seemed like some were half-full! There was shower gel, lotion, shampoo and conditioner. Smelled good but I didn't use any of it.
What else about the bathroom.. it was a single bathroom with a nice glass shower, pretty good size, very modern clean lines. Towels were nice and white but not nearly the quality of DCL towels. No Royal Caribbean logo on them. It's ok, but despite myself I was looking for the little details that would make me say... wow Royal..
One very nice touch in the bathroom was an automatic night light. it was always on and bright enough (yet dim), that you could use the bathroom at night without turning the actual lights on.
Oh and the mini-bar was not stocked, it was emptied which was great for us. I did find the previous passenger's sushi in the fridge though... yuck.
Our stateroom attendant came around and introduced himself, very nice man. But clearly NID- not into details ;)

What I really loved about our stateroom. I loved the closet storage. Instead of being in a narrow hallway by the door like on DCL there were 2 closets on either side of the bed. There was also overhead storage. I took one closet and my DH and DS the other.
One of the closets had the safe in it, it was exactly the same as DCL.
In addition to the storage around the bed, there were several drawers near the desk. Above the desk there were several outlets and 2 USB ports.
We found the storage design and capacity very smart and efficient. Even more so than on DCL.
The other thing that is nice about Royal's stateroom is that the bed separates if you have two people that want to sleep apart. We had ours together and it was very comfortable with good quality linens.
My DS was bummed there was no bunk bed, he slept on the sofa bed which actually turned into a double bed.
Finally, the TV is much bigger than on DCL and it also swivels out of the wall.
There were on demand movies, but most had a charge.
We mainly watched the same things as at home..CNN, NBC etc. Even on DCL we don't watch much TV but my DS would watch movies sometimes.

Here are some photos of our stateroom. If I had to give edge to either line, it's a very slight one to DCL. Mostly because of the little details. But very very slight edge. Many things like closets and tv was better on Anthem.

Interesting with the beds being in that cut-out. Doesn't seem like there would be much separation if they were to be separate.

How did it do with staying together? Both of my cruises with Royal I was eaten by the mattresses - less so on my Med cruise than Alaska, but it was still hungry, hungry mattresses each night. Which surprised me since HAL actually had the strap to go around them and tighten them up together. Apparently RCCL just pulls the sheets tighter (per the deck manager I spoke with on Radiance in Alaska when I literally woke up wedged between the mattresses).

I will tell you at the end if it was "one and done" for us too ;)

If you can swing it, with a 1.5 year old I would probably choose DCL

We did the character breakfast too and I read about it previously and told my DS that it's a chocolate menu... well it wasn't. He wasn't a happy camper at first ;) I'm guessing they don't do that on every ship?

You can't see it in the photos, but there are too small night tables on each side of the bed. No wider than 10 inches, if I had to guess. If they were to separate the beds, the 2 night tables would be placed in the middle so about 20 inches of separation? Our bed was together though and neither of us could tell that it can separate. No hungry mattress here

I found it! :) I really loved these too. So often we didn't have a time on us either and these screens provided that. I felt like those screens were very helpful.

I have read child care is very good. I don't think you have anything to worry about there. Poolside food is nowhere near as good on DCL as it it is on Carnival. Imho DCL it's downright awful. The buffet is very good on DCL and the MDR is also good. Dcl's MDR food is pretty rich, with lots of sauces. You won't find things like fried chicken and mashed potatoes on the menu like you will on carnival.
The shows on Disney are good, but they are geared to family's and kids. If your an adult that likes G rated movies and Disney you' ll like it. If not you may find the shows boring. As far as night life...It's pretty non existsnt. The will have some adult entertainment at 1030. Sometimes a lot of people show, but when that's over the ships pretty quite. I find the shows boring and Im not a huge fan of Disney movies. That stuffs not important to me though. I like cruising for the ports, relaxing and sleeping. I think everyone should try a Disney cruise once, but I would wait until your child is old enough to enjoy the shows, pools and clubs. The main reason we've stuck with Disney is because my kids really like the clubs. Even now as teens they still like it. Disney does a great job with kids. Other then that I don't think they are better then anyone else.

I used the toiletry items in our room and I actually kind of liked them better than DCL (I know, gasp!) but I LOVED the storage our room hand. RCL has DCL beat on that for sure. BUT as my DH kept saying, this is just one class. Not all the RCL ships would be set up like that so I would love to know how the Oasis class has as far as storage because like you, I'd love to try that class next. After I take a few more DCL because I did miss the mouse on this cruise.

Harmony of the Seas is supposed to have similar décor and layout in the cabins. Oasis and Allure are a bit different from what I can find online. I read somewhere Harmony is a blend of Oasis with Quantum? Mostly Oasis but a lot of Quantum features.

Thanks for posting, we're considering Harmony or Symphony for my 50th in 2019. We tried Carnival Vista last summer and loved it, we leave in a few days to spend 14 more days on her and are booked for Horizon to Bermuda next year. We're certainly not fine with DCL, but we've branched out and couldn't be happier about it. I'm anxiously awaiting to read more from you.

Vista looks so cool, I wouldn't mind trying that one as well :) Is Horizon Carnival's brand new ship?
We are also considering Harmony or Symphony at some point.
