Disney considers reducing portion sizes to cut costs.

I was in Vegas last weekend and strip prices for food and beverages are even higher than WDW. Good luck finding an inexpensive vacation destination. Venturing off the Strip is a bit like venturing out beyond WDW property for cheaper meals (albeit closer and easier to use Lyft), it can be done, but it's just less convenient.

WDW won't be reducing prices, just cutting portions if they go ahead. Most of the portions were too large anyway, but the point appears to be that the prices will stay the same.

As for ingredients and vendors changing, they probably don't have much of a choice about those.

If you want cheap food and beverage, go to Granada, Spain. Beers are 2-3 euro and you get free tapas when you buy a drink. It was AMAZING.

The point of the suggested changes are to combat inflation and increased costs for everything that many of us have experienced. Fuel for deliveries? Food costs? Limited supply? It's all happening. I'm not condoning her wording, that was inappropriate. But companies do need plans to counter inflation. At least disney said it out loud. Other companies are doing it silently.

Of course they're not going to cut costs, the point it costs for them went up, so costs for us go up. Inflation sucks, but I'm not getting any more gas for triple my local price either. How do you suggest they address it?

I don’t comment much on pricing stuff, haven’t had much to say about G+ or dearth of discounts. I just decreased my stay a day. But…although many food items at Disney are huge to my eyes (not taking cost into account), and everyone’s aware that there are issues with shipping, inflation, etc etc etc…this really bothered me. Not that it might happen, but how it was said.

What was she thinking??? Did she need to mention waistlines? That seems at least disrespectful and insensitive, if not downright condescending. And just short of insulting. I mean, we could certainly have a discussion on how tough it is to find appealing healthy choices at Disney if we want to get into waistline maintenance. But instead, and I hope they read this: ya’ll need to raise pricing? Fine - let’s see where it tops out. But it’s probably time to put a lid on your verbal arrogance.
I completely agree about the healthy options. I usually try to continue eating healthy when I’m on vacation but struggle to find healthy options at every meal. And most everything is covered in oil or butter if you get something more healthy to begin with.

I noticed vegan, gluten free etc options on virtually every menu, not sure if those were healthy or not though. Have you ever asked for a dish to be prepared without the added fats?

I guess I should have stated I usually prefer to eat meat and veggies (usually chicken) and it just seems hard to get something that isn’t cooked in butter or heavy oil.
I have never asked honestly but thankfully you do a significant amount of walking when at the parks.
I may try to ask next trip to see if I can have it cooked lighter.

Yeah most stuff is covered in sauces and fats for sure, I am pretty sure that you can ask for those on the side so at least you have some control over how much you consume. It's hard to scrape them to the side, they are usually so dang good. Lots of walking for sure. We did over 60 miles on our 6 days a couple weeks ago and that included a total washout day when we didn't go out much. We aren't park commandos anymore either we pretty much just meander around to where the food and drink is ....

Weird; I grew up just south of the border and have eaten in many Canadian restaurants over the years. I’ve never once been served a smaller portion of anything compared to U.S. restaurants.
Maybe I am comparing the sizes to what I eat at home. :)

As a big man, I was fine with her comments. I didn’t take offense at her supposed “fat-shaming remark”. If anything, she’s right, and we could all do to eat healthier at WDW.

Then eat healthier at Disney. You can choose to do that now. Choose better entrees, split your meal, don't eat every last bite, don't order dessert.

Some people diet the rest of the year and like taking their week of vacation to let loose a little. The point is that they don't need others deciding for them. Especially when it's really just a profit move disguised as interest in health. If they really cared, they'd stop selling all those unhealthy desserts.

Most of my point was to say I don’t think she’s “fat-shaming”. The reduced portion size sucks but I’d take that over cancelling planned attractions.

That’s a false dichotomy. Those aren’t the only two options. How about the option where they offset some of those losses with the fat new unprecedented income stream coming from Genie+?

I’m sure that income stream is already baked into their models. All I’m saying is that I’d basically rather them do anything other than cut back on planned attractions.

Of course it is. Which is why it's all so ridiculous. Profits are just earmarked as profits. Losses have to be made up for elsewhere. But never from that mysterious pile of profits.

Losses are inherently included in “profits”. Getting their profits back to where shareholders expect them to be takes a ton of incremental changes from cutting costs (reduced portion sizes, cancelled attractions, less entertainment) or increasing revenue (new attractions, after hours events, increasing prices, genie+). The revenue/cost streams from these sources aren’t siloed out, but are already looked at all together when Disney is making decisions. You can’t just offset one area with profits from another if they’re already all be looked at in the big picture.

At Kona I had a poke bowl. I ate it all.
at California grill I had king salmon, 2 small purple potatoes, and vegetable, I ate most of it.
I didn’t consider the portion size “huge”
Roaring Forks had chicken and waffles for lunch…2 Mickey waffles and 2 chicken strips. Again not, an overly large serving , IMO.
