Disney Collection and wait list question

This week I tried to book a long weekend at VGC in Oct (adults only to celebrate our anniversary!). No rooms are available. I called member services because I wanted to book a Disney Collection hotel and wait list the VGC. Member services said I couldn't because once my vacation points were converted to use at a Disney Collection they could not be used for anything else even if I had to cancel the trip. I would have to use additional points to book the VGC is the wait list came through AND I would still have the points from my previous reservation to use by the end of my use year only at a Disney Collection hotel.

This is the first I had heard of this, as well as the first time I had thought about wait listing an upcoming stay. Has anyone else run into this problem? It is unfortunate because the VGC was only going to be 46 points for the weekend and now I'm using 96 points to stay at Paradise Pier. At least we will probably have a view of VGC and can dream of staying at our "home." :)

MS is correct. Once DVC points are used to make any non-DVC reservation, they become "Reservation Points" and can no longer be used for reservations at DVC resorts or the World Passport Collection. They can be used for another Disney Collection, Concierge Collection or Adventure Collection reservation - even to reserve and stay during the last 4 months of your Use Year. If canceled, Reservation Points may not be banked and will expire at the end of that Use Year.

The policy is in place because once the points are committed to one of the non-DVC options, they are immediately given to DRC for cash reservations to pay for the reservation and cannot be recovered by MS for DVC reservations. The policy has been part of DVC since the beginning and has never been altered.

Thanks for the confirmation. I think I just thought of Disney Collection as the same as the DVC destinations given the similar "d" word in their names. :) it puts us VGC owners at a little bit of a disadvantage given the fact that there is only 1 DVC in the west right now. I'm not complaining too much though cause our trip to Disney is still going to AMAZING!

Rule of 4? Do you mind telling me what that is? Thanks!

You are not permitted to both book and stay during the last four months of the UY if you are booking the Disney Collection, Adventures by Disney or the Concierge Collection. You can book during the last four months of the UY if you are not staying during that time. You can stay during that time if you are not booking during that time.

DVC needs more than four months to get the lodging that represents your points sold to pay for your trip.

Thanks! I remember it now that I read it. The rule hasn't been an issue with us yet as usually I am on the ball planning out more than 4 months in advance. Planning Disney trips gives me myDisney fix when we aren't at Disney!

"Reservation Points" are an exception to the rule of 4 since they are already restricted for that use. They may still be used to make and use a reservation during the last 4 months of your Use Year in addition to the $95 charge to make the reservation (with the exception of the Disney Collection resorts at DL).
