Disney CEO 35% raise

Compared to most other places in the world, we here in the US live in a land of endless opportunities. If you don't think you are paid enough at your job, WORK HARD to get a better one. I put myself through college with a job and student loans, which I just recently paid off. I have a close friend who is a single mother of 3 (no child support) who worked two jobs, took Internet college courses, and recently received her teacher certification. She worked hard to be able to provide a better life for her family. IMO, what other people make is irrelevant. They worked hard to get to where they are, and good for them. All that matters to me are the goals I am working for.

As best as I can understand it, some people think it is ok to steal and break rules at WDW becasue the CEO got a huge raise.:confused3

I'm betting most of those posts are of the tounge in cheek kind. At least, I hope they are.

I actually thought folks were talking about a reuse/recycle effort - seriously :rotfl:

Well, good for him for his raise. I'm sure I help in the 'Disney is making more money department' :thumbsup2

I must admit during hte first two pages read I was thinking, "man that is a lot of money what a big jerk!" Then I got to thinking about my past four disney experiences and how great they were. My last one I had a medical issue and could not use 3 of my 7 disney passes to the parks (they expired too). So the CM's took care of me by upgrading me to a better room and some other free junk. It made the whole family feel better. So, while this man makes lords of money, he takes care of the very important people at disney...the guests...

Wow, you were lucky that Bob Iger was there to take care of you like that. Oh wait, I just re-read your post and it was the cast members that took care of you. I agree that was nice of them. They earned their $8.00/hr that day.

Disney stock closed today at $40.49 - another new all time high.

Since the lows of March of 2008, the Dow Jones average is up 86%.

Disney stock is up 173% in that time.

Draw your own conclusions.

The CMs do those things under the direction of their higher-ups, Bob Iger being the highest.

This thing has gotten way off topic. Let's get back to the heart of the matter here.....

Those refillable resort mugs............. ;)

Let's take it one step further -- do you think Bob Iger ever has to buy a refillable resort mug?

I just got a raise at my work. I've been there not quite two years. In that time, my salary has risen 102%. Yes, that's right, I've more than doubled my salary in 22 months. Why? Because I've worked my butt off and I'm sure Igor did as well. And honestly, when you are looking at percentages, that 35% looks really crappy to me right now.

See - it's all in your perspective of things.

I cant get a child tax credit for my 17 yr old??? I pay for everything for him, he is still in school and will be next yr as well! ARGGG!!!

My DH & I were totally shocked when we learned of this law. 2010 was the 1st year it applied to us. Our 17 y/o is only a junior in HS & will actually turn 19 just a few months after she graduates. How do we not earn the child tax credit on her?!

Take heart - when they go to college, if they remain dependents, you'll get your just reward! (as long as the lifetime opportunity credit/learning credits remain in force)

You talk about declining services and I have seen it as well. On our last visit we checked in and headed to our room, only to find no less than 6 members of the cleaning staff sitting on the bed smoking marijuana. I believe that has to do entirely with the quality, not quantity, of the work force. If you hire people that do not want to do a job, most likely it will not get done.

The fact is that domestically expenses are up $145M, revenue is down $38M and 5% less rooms are full, meaning roughly 5% less people are visiting. I guess the wise man would increase headcount and lose more money just so that he can say he is employing more people? Or maybe, just maybe, he will look to lower staffing by about 5% to offset the decreased attendance.

The profit increase that Disney experienced is directly tied to its Media Networks while the parks are making less and less money each year. If you look from 2008 to 2010, income from the parks is off by about $570M. I hate that people have lost jobs but when income from a business segment drops by $570M in two years something has to be done to offset the drop.

did they at least offer you a quick hit?

Nope, but strangely they didn't even bother to leave the room as we went to get the manager. When he arrived he escorted them from the room and they didn't seem overly upset.

I do not expect CEO and mousekeeping make same money, BUT, when they cut people it affects my experience. When mousekeeping skips rooms just because they are understaffed, I feel like I wasted money on such an expensive hotel and start look elsewhere. So maybe they saved this year and now he owns part of this savings, but how many customers will leave. Also quality is not the best, prices are up, not exactly good business. I got my first PIN for up to 40 %. Great PIN, but when I priced it, wow, I can still do Bonnet Creek and rent a car, pay for parking and so on, for LESS. I do not know, I just feel like he is not doing a good job. He may bring people in parks with all those discounts but how many will return, it is like pushing to limits.

Hey Kelly! Well written post! I concur!

It is NOT impractical...

That's exactly why I have never and will never shop at Walmart; heck I won't even take someone else to Walmart. I also try to never buy anything that's made in China. If I am shopping for something and there is an American-made product next a foreign-made one I'll buy the American made product, EVERY TIME, even at double the price!

If more people followed these few rules the US would be a heck of a lot better off...

Martin
OK ... but look at how you phrased this ... "If I am shopping for something and there is an American-made product next a foreign-made one I'll buy the American made product, EVERY TIME, even at double the price!"

So my question is ... what if there's NOT an American-made product and it's still something you want? Do you do without, or do you buy the foreign-made one because there is no American-made alternative? If something you buy regularly used to be "Made in the USA" but it's not any more because the jobs were shipped to Mexico, do you then not buy that item at all, or do you buy the Mexican-made one because there isn't an American option?

My point being that "choosing American when it's available" is different from "choosing American".

:earsboy:

I guess it's true that it really makes you mellow, then.

Well I hope the manager at least left you a large basket of munchies to get you through the night!

See, you weren't thinking. I would have taken pictures and then sold them back to WDW for some serious ca$h (or posted them on the web in Iger got stingy :lmao:).

i'll take his 35% over your 102%
