Disney can be soooo Cheap sometimes

About catching a cold from the cold, new studies have recently demonstrated that cold temperatures can lead to a greater susceptibility to catching a cold.

Im just curious. How do you know they did it to save money. I am 100% positive that Disney (at least no one there who knows what they are talking about) would have told you that, even if it was true. Im just saying it is very possible that the poo heating system was simply broke.

Beach Club had 14 Life Guards for 15 swimmers party:

I talked to a few of the Life Guards.... They had their jackets on and were cold because it wasn't 75 and sunny that day :teeth:

I asked why the Quite Pool was 80 degrees and the big pool was 70 degrees ???... they smiled and said "Disney is saving money".

There was a post on Dis Boards also about turning the pools down for "enviromental reasons"...not sure who got that story? or what that means? But a few people asked about it back in Jan.

I just wondered if its still going on.... and if Disney does other things like this?

I'm sorry, I know this was a typo...call me immature, but I got quite a giggle out of this one!! :rotfl2: I'm sure it smelled nicer without the heated 'poo'. Gosh, I need to get back to work! This week off in the Feb cold is mushing my brain! :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

(just trying to lighten the thread a little)

I do vacation rentals in SW Florida and I know that if the pools do not have a cover the warmth escapes through the top of the pool, that is why you will see steam rising off of the pools.....also if the weather gets colder than 55 degrees the pool heater motors automatically kick off to protect them.....they will turn back on when the outdoor temp gets warmer. Pools that are very large do take a long time to heat back up again, the sun is a big help too, if it is very cloudy out the pools take even longer.

Didnt want to get too technical but I thought the info I have learned from the pros would help you understand a bit

Not to start a debate on this, I've stayed at hotels in Vero/Melbourne that had their pools drained in January. Maybe it was for cleaning, I'm not sure, but the pools were totally drained.

it's not a debate. I've just never seen it personally. we've got friends with private pools that never drain them for the winter. our community has 2 pools, they heat one all winter and just treat the other one. if they stopped heating the one, we'd fire the HOA. :) it may seem silly, but we expect to be able to swim in January. I drove by yesterday and there were plenty of people swimming and laying out. I've stayed in onsite and offsite hotels in the winter and never seen them drained. that's just my experience.

Disney does a ton of things to be environmentaly friendly. I am not sure if thats why the pool was cold or not but if you look at the Disney corporate web site you will find there yearly Enviroport that details this type of thing. Just remember that even though a lifeguard told you it was to save money doesn't mean that is the case. Most of the time front line CM's like those lifeguards would have no idea what was going on.

To try to stick with the OP's original gist: it does seem pretty cheap of Disney to not do their best to maintain BC's pool temperature 24/7/365. After all, the SAB pool is the biggest attraction to BC, except for its next-door-to-EPCOT status. I know when I stayed there, the biggest reason for us was that we could enjoy SAB when not in the parks. That's part of the reason I paid extra for BC and didn't stay at WL.

But it IS an assumption to say that Disney was doing it to save money. Notwithstanding what the lifeguard said, it could have been merely a broken heater. I wouldn't expect any compensation for your problems, but it sounds to me like it's a matter worthy of a polite complaint to guest services. Any changes to SAB, even the water temperature, are things that should be made known to guests before they stay there, and any problems should be fixed ASAP. It's not like it's the little indoor pool at a Holiday Inn Express went bad. This is supposed to be the premiere pool on Disney property.

Remember, a lot of hotels drain their pools in the wintertime (yes, even ones in Florida) so having a pool to swim in in January is a bonus.
:confused3 I've grown up and lived the last 36 years in Florida, from Miami to Northern Florida and have never seen a pool drained except for repairs. If they stay empty they quickly fill up with skateboarders :thumbsup2
P.S. I have the air conditioning on today :cool1:

Sorry there is no correlation between swimming in cold water and getting a three week cold. Only germs can do that.

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: I thought I was the only immature grown-up to catch that typo. I was giggling like a kid when I read it, but kept it to myself. Now I can laugh out loud knowing I'm not the only one thinking that the heated "POO" was the problem! :crazy2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

OK - back OT. To OP - I have no doubt that Disney does little things to save a buck here and there. I am also interested in your original question, what types of cut-backs have others encountered?

Thanks for the post

P.S. I should have never said anything about being sick...that is not the direction I wanted the post to go in. I have learned my lesson for the future. Wrestling this puppy back to my original gist has been harder than getting on Soaring without a wait or fastpass at 3:00pm on Dec 26th :rotfl2:

Has anyone thought that as many people complained that the pool was too warm so to make as many people happy as possible(not an easy task) they have one warm pool and one pool cooler for those who really want to swim and workout. If you swim for exercise most like a cooler pool. ME I would like all the pools to be hot tub temp. but I have friends who complain if it doesn't turn their feet blue they say they get overheated swimming.

I seriously doubt this had anything to do with Disney saving money, but I guess none of us can know for sure.....

My question is, if the pool water was too cold, WHY DID YOU SWIM IN IT? I know that if I stick my toe in the water and it's too cold, I don't get in! I also don't go anywhere in January expecting to swim - even if the pool IS heated, you still have to get out! Cold air and wet skin -

I agree with the previous poster: some people will complain about anything! Mentioning it to management is one thing; expecting something because you complained - that's ridiculous.

To answer your first question- This is supposed to be the premiere pool on Disney property. This is up there with Soaring, Space Mountain and EE. You don't stay a week at the BC and skip the pool :confused3 (last day was the warmest so it was our best chance)

To answer your second question- I'm not complaining or asking for money back. I mentioned that another guest did complain and got a credit. I just brought that up to tell a bigger picture story.

I actually had a good time in the pool... we just turned blue. But still fun.
As for the entire trip....I'd rate it as 99% perfect and I love disney.

For the 49th time. :Pinkbounc ... I thought a thread about ways Disney has experimented with saving money might be good for a few good laughs. ( you know.... like - "disney bought cheaper Ketchup and the packet exploded when my mom tried to open it") stuff like that.

Sorry, its not your fault. My poor writing skills have gotten me into trouble before

well, they're not printing the Disney catalog any longer. that's pretty cheap in my opinion. :)

I do know what you mean :thumbsup2 . I also swim laps ( I love the water, that's whey I choose Beach Club as a resort ) and a cold pool is better for exercise.

But this is more than two equal size pools, one warm and one cold. Disney's Beach Club has one of the greatest pools ever, but it is for play. Can't swim a lap.... no straight lines (it was 70 degrees).

The Beach Club also has a small square shaped pool, that is like any you see at any hotel any-where in the world. Its the quite pool for adults and you could swim laps (it was 80 degrees).

It didn't make sense to me, to heat the lap-pool, and cool the play-pool pirate:

Back to the topic...... Have you ever seen Disney try to save money and it turn-out to be a silly idea :)

Since we are on the pool topic ........

I absolutely love swimming at Disney, around midnight, with the air being cool, *AND* there is steam all on the water. It's a very magical feeling to me!

And because I am from New York State, swimming outside, in December, was very special !

I know you get the germs from other people. But when your body gets wet or cold it can lower your strength, and in this weakened state, allow the germs you already have to get the best of you.

This is why you get more colds in winter.

In the summer you come in contact with the same germs but since your body is not being taxed by cold or wet you are strong enough to not let the cold develop.

PS Back on Topic. I shouldn't even mentioned the cold. Even if I dindn't get sick. .... isn't this a dirty trick by Disney? I paid full price and they tried to cheap-out on the pool. Why do you go to the beach club anyway? :confused3

You get more colds in winter because more people are cooped up inside and germs have a much easier time spreading among people in close quarters. A few moments of cold does not tax your immune system.

As for the original topic I completely agree and was also angered by the pool temp, not so much for me but for my kids who just cant enjoy a frigid pool for long. For the price paid, I expect a reasonably warm pool.

Wow this poor OP must feel like he/she opened the proverbial can of worms! Other than the heated poo comment this thread has been way too serious! I see what they meant, for what you pay at Beach Club the pool should be quite comfy. I know that in December we stayed at POFQ. Freezing cold pool, the kids used the slide and we sat by it but couldn't swim. Kind of a bummer. We then moved over to SSR, the pool was wonderfully warm each day we were there and we swam every day. Weather temps ranged from almost 80 to mid 50's and the pool was always warm. They apparently have figured out pool heater technology over there. I figure either Disney was saving some money or maybe the Beach Club (and POFQ too I guess) pool heater was faulty. Either way, too bad for the folks paying premo prices to stay and swim there.

I don't have much to add except I wish they would keep that Mexican place by Pirates open all year round. I guess its only open in the peak season and I want to try it sometime! I never made it over that way in December when it probably was open.
