i've looked at the transportation link and can see that the buses run between parks and hotels, but can you get buses from typhoon lagoon to downtown disney, and from MK to downtown? :wave2: we are staying off-site and will not be hiring a car, and i want to save on expensive taxi fares for just a short journey.

Nope, DTD buses only go to resorts to avoid people doing what you are suggesting.

I am not sure about going from the water parks to DTD, but you can not go from MK, Epcot, AK or MGM to DTD.
Generally the only way to get to DTD is from a resort.
What you can do is if you are in MK, get on a bus to on of the Port Orleans resorts or the CB and then get off there and then take one of their buses to DTD.

In the morning and early afternoon (after 10 am), the busses from the resorts to DTD stop at TL first. In the Evening, the busses from DTD to the resorts stop off at TL first.

will i get away with this, do they not check if you are staying at the hotel?

As long as you have a valid WDW theme park ticket you are entitled to use all the transportation at WDW. From the MK you can take the monorail to any of the resorts in the area (Contemporary, Polynesian or Grand Floridian)and take a Disney bus. You can also take a 10 minute walk from the MK to the Contemporary Resort. You will see the bus station at the Contemporary as you approach the resort.

Transporation website says to take the monorail to Grand Floridian and take a Bus to DTD. Will be doing the same myself!

I can confirm the above is true. It's sort of a frustrating thing if you're not wanting to go to a waterpark, but I guess it's handy if you ARE going to one.

Also, I really don't think Disney plans their routes to discourage offsite resort guests from using it. It's for the use of anyone with a valid park ticket. They just have to plan for the way the majority of guests want to use it.

Yes, they did try to discourage offsite guests from parking at DTD to get to the parks. DTD buses used to go to all the parks, and they no longer do because Disney was trying to discourage offsite guests from parking at DTD and then heading to the parks (to avoid paying to park) via buses. Now it's a bit more time consuming to get to a park from DTD.

Yes, anyone can use Disney transportation BUT offsite guests aren't suppose to park at DTD and take the bus to a park to avoid paying to park. That's not what DTD parking is meant for.

thats not what we were planning on doing anyway as we won't have a car.
i have simply planned a day at MK and thought it would be nice to go to DTD for the evening, and only wanted to know if this was possible without paying for a taxi

What you want to do is fine then. I was just replying to the other poster who thought Disney didn't try and discourage parking at DTD and using those buses to get to a park.
