Help Please.

After being taken by a gypsy taxi I've been told that Disney Resorts for this reason only approve one taxi company for their resorts. The ones that their bell hops call forward for you.

Can anyone tell me the name of the taxi service that Disney does use?

Mears

Yes, Disney only allows taxis owned by Mears Transportation to pick up on Disney property.

However, you could wait forever if you look for a cab with a big "Mears Taxi" logo painted on it.

Mears owns three taxi brand in the Orlando: Yellow Cab, Checker Cab, and City Cab. So those are the brands to look for if you're looking for a Mears cab.

That doesn't mean that all other taxi providers in the Orlando are dishonest -- only that Disney and Mears have a agreement with each other.

Checker Cab is the only one authorized to pick up at resorts and taxi stands at WDW. Their number is (407) 422-2222.

All of the Mears-owned taxis do have Mears on their tail (and maybe also on their sides, in smaller type), but Checker Cab or another brand name is prominent on the side. So you can be sure you're getting a real Mears taxi and not some look-alike, sound-alike, wannabe (and there are a few of those.)

OP, where'd you catch your "gypsy" taxi? My kids and I ended up with one at CSR a few weeks ago. I couldn't get the valet's attention and saw a man over by the resort entrance. He mouthed "taxi?" to me and I nodded yes. So he waved me over and walks us to a limo. It didn't feel quite right but we were going to be late for our dinner at Jiko so I just went with it. Of course there was no meter and I'm wondering how much it's going to cost me. But I have to say, he got us there fast and in the end, to me it was worth the $17 he charged me. On the way back, we got a regular taxi and it was just under $11. So for $6 more, my kids got to ride in a limo (they thought it was cool.) But I have to admit, I would never accept a ride like that again.
