By the way, the 330B yen cost mentioned in the press release is about $2.07B, so less than the Wish cost, if memory serves. Is that because Disney is putting up the rest? I can't imagine OCL would spend less. Not sure if this has been posted yet - the press release from OLC, has some details on cost and ship stats. Seems like they will stick with the all inclusive pricing of DCL...

Wonder of the Seas was only $1.35B and that is 6000 passengers. So I imagine Wish class is less than 1.00B.By the way, the 330B yen cost mentioned in the press release is about $2.07B, so less than the Wish cost, if memory serves. Oh dear god, if they don't book via the main DCL site, I hope to god OLC gets a better booking system than what they have for TDR. that thing is a disaster.Since OLC is paying for the ship according to their board of directors financial report, they are licensing the IP from Disney and will own and operate the ship. This may not even show up on DCL's site as a booking option, or DCL might create a DCL Asia booking site.
I thought i saw $2.4B as the total cost to launch the Wish but now I only see one google result with that number.Wonder of the Seas was only $1.35B and that is 6000 passengers. So I imagine Wish class is less than 1.00B.
It is part of a 10-year, $60 billion expansion of Disney's theme parks and cruise business.
Perhaps they are referring to new stuff (attractions, ships, etc), not necessarily who is actually paying for it?But if Disney is not putting any real dollars in this ship (just licensing), why does the article in this thread's first post say this?
IKR? It's funny to me that Japanese websites are so clunky for a nation that is the home of so many tech companies and of high-speed bullet trains, lol. I think the TDR website is actually one of the better sites.Oh dear god, if they don't book via the main DCL site, I hope to god OLC gets a better booking system than what they have for TDR. that thing is a disaster.

Exactly. When you go to Japan you feel like you’re in the future. You go to the websites and you might as well be back in the days of Netscape. The discordance is jarring.IKR? One of my favorite memes is that Japan has been living in the year 2000 since the 1980s (and still is). On one hand there are a ton of robots and LEDs, but on the other there are often barely-functional websites and a lot of business is still done by fax machine.Exactly. When you go to Japan you feel like you’re in the future. You go to the websites and you might as well be back in the days of Netscape. The discordance is jarring.
Great info. Thanks!According to DCL Annual Report FY23 - "During 2016-2017 the Company contracted with DCL Maritime LLC to purchase 3 new Wish class ships for delivery in 2022, 2024 and 2025." The total cost in FY23 was $2,069,309,000 for the three ships.
According to Forbes - OLC will build and operate the ship.

According to Meyer Werft the build contract is with OLC.

Disney may be investing some money in this but OLC is building the ship. The original announcement for this came from OLC not Disney. Disney was at the News conference in Japan. The decision by OLC was made on 9 July 2024 at their board meeting according to OLC so it probably was not part of Disney's $60B announcement months ago.
Maybe that total cost is just the portion incurred in FY23, not the total cost of all ships, spanning 2022-2025?The total cost in FY23 was $2,069,309,000 for the three ships.
Maybe the higher cost is due to the difference in location. Japan likely has higher import costs on materials, and possibly higher labor costs (which can happen if you have stricter safety laws as well). Japan seems to be able to build faster so that may also be a factor.Great info. Thanks!
What do you make of the $2B+ mentioned in the OLC press release? Disney is getting 3 ships for the same investment as one OLC ship? OLC says it includes construction, prep, etc. That etc. can't total over a billion dollars. The math is just not mathing for me. LOL
Some of it must be but $2B worth? Maybe they have to build and theme a terminal? Maybe buy an island? Hopefully we get more details soon.Maybe the higher cost is due to the difference in location. The ship will be built in Germany just like the other three in the Wish class.Maybe the higher cost is due to the difference in location.
