Disney to add two cruise ships

• Disney to Add Two New Cruise Ships
• Disney to add 2 new vessels to cruise business to meet family cruise vacation demand

Updated: 5 minutes ago
LOS ANGELES - Walt Disney Co. said Thursday it would double the size of its cruise business by adding two ships, scheduled to launch in 2011 and 2012.

The company has been considering expanding its cruise unit, reflecting the entertainment conglomerate's attempt to broaden its theme parks-based hospitality business.

Disney said it has signed a letter of intent with Germany's Meyer Werft shipyard for two 122,000-ton ships, which would be two decks taller than its existing 83,000-ton ships.

The Disney Cruise Line was launched in 1998.

Disney president and chief executive Bob Iger said the cruise line has had high margins and double-digit returns on invested capital. "We're excited to announce the expansion of our fleet, which is a logical next step in what is a real growth business for us," He said.

Financial terms were not released.

Wow! That's exciting. Let's start the speculation, what will be the names of the ships?

My guesses for names are Disney Dream & Disney Fantasy

Awesome, awesome, awesome news!!! :cool1: Can't wait for more scoop!

Boy, you guys are GOOD! :cheer2: :cheer2:

Poof, gone! Hopefully that was bogus info.

How about Fantasia then. Imaigination might work or just "The Imagine"- Is Celebration taken? Ooh- I hope they let us into the 2 old ships for a reasonable amt. of points- but I won't hold my breath.
I will bet that 2 of their 4 ships will have a home port in California.

Fantasia would work, although Royal Caribbean has a "Fantasy of the Seas." Carnival already has a "Celebration" and "Imagination," so I don't see either of those.

I wouldn't be surprised to see one of the new ships at Long Beach. It's a natural tie-in with DL.

There are a couple of places in Florida they could put the other -- Canaveral, Ft. Lauderdale (Port Everglades), or Tampa. I don't see them putting one in Miami, just because of the competion with RCL, Carnival, Norwegian, et al.

If there is a DVC ship (which I sorta doubt), Canaveral would be the logical place.

My family and I have never been on a cruise before, but we would LOVE to go on one.....especially a Disney cruise! A port in California for a Disney ship would be ideal for us!:cool1:

A few days at Disneyland followed by a nice, relaxing, week long cruise sounds like heaven to me!:cloud9:

All I can say is :yay:!! DH and I went on a 3-day Disney Wonder cruise last summer and our family is going this summer. What a great addition! (I hope at least one of them is coming to the West Coast! :) )
