We flew home today and were very disappointed with the baggage from MCO. Arriving at Wichita, our baggage had zippers open, one with shoes coming out of it. Another which folds in half, buttons and then zips together was completely unzipped and left to dangled with everything inside being completely turned inside out. We had placed many items from WDW here as it had double protection with the buttons and zippers. Some had been so distorted, it had to be thrown away. Finally, our nice Samsonite luggage now has scraps and mars on it that look terrible as well as a handle torn loose. We had traveled through several airports and have never experienced poor luggage, but this was it:sad2:

I've traveled a lot over the years and it seems that luggage handling get worse all the time! I've actually replaced luggage after 2 trips atleast twice!!! and its been good luggage!!! The handlers just don't care!!! Sorry you had a bad experience! I just bought a new suitcase in Dec.....wonder how long it will last?

Did you report it to the airline before you left the airport?

We came home yesterday and had one zipper completely ripped off our biggest luggage bag, making it useless. We weren't very happy as well.

I'm not saying it applies to the OP but cheap luggage from places like WalMart and Target are poorly made. So bad that when tested reviewers don't think it will last even one flight.

This is too bad, but is considered normal wear and tear from baggage handling. None of the "damage" you described would warrant you any kind of compensation.

MCO isn't responsible, it's the baggage handlers hired by your airline.

You might want to see if you can pack lighter and do carry-on only in the future.

We did not report it. We could have, but by then we were in Wichita and it was not their fault. My biggest complaint, lies with whoever checked them for security reasons. I understand they unzip them, but to leave 25-30% of a child's shoe sticking out of one and to leave the other bag's zipper completely unzipped was just sloppy. I apologize for venting here!

It's possible the zippers got caught on another bag or piece of equipment and were unzipped.

If your bag had been unzipped for a security search, TSA should have left a card (I know, it could have fallen out). You might want to lock your luggage or use ties next time.

There was a note from TSA. The zipper goes from one side to the other. Perhaps they overlooked redoing it. However, it was obvious not right as it the suitcase was barely standing up right. Lucky for us it had the second fastening. As far as if it is cheap, I don't know. I suspect each bag was 100-200 a piece, with the one in question being around $200. To me, that is expensive, but maybe not. Overall, I was just disappointed with the care. We have traveled through Denver, Portland, Kansas City, and Orlando (many times) and never had any concerns. I actually missed a piece of the luggage, due to the fact that when it went around, it was so beat up, I did not think it was mine.

I think you're making assumptions that the damage/issue occured at MCO. It could have happened any time during transit, including at your home airport when the luggage was unloaded.

I did not think that once your luggage passed security, it was looked at again. Do they reopen it at every airport?

TSA usually only inspects at the origin airport but luggage could get damaged going on and off the plane. I travel alot and I've seen the baggage handlers throwing luggage. I've seen carts traveling on the tarmac and luggage falls off.

Not very often, but who is to say that the TSA is the one that left the luggage open? It could have been opened by a baggage handler looking for something, it could have been caught on something in transit, it could have been crushed in cargo and caused the zipper to seperate.

One is assuming TSA is the cause, but it's a jump to make that assumption.

More then I can count.

Perhaps, but the first zipper in question is about 7 feet long with 2 curves as it spans both sides and the other with the shoes is 2 feet long. (2 separate suitcases). It is sad to think that one would try to steal but a possibility I had not thought of. There is zero chance the larger one caught on something and opened. The poster who recommended locks it correct. This is the best solution.

Ahhh... one of the reasons why we always FedEx our luggae. Bags arrive in one piece and without the hassle at the airports.

we have flew in and out of mco many times and the only time we have had problems with our luggage being damaged is when we flew SW.

I never have any issues beyond normal scratches and mars, which are to be expected.

I always use TSA approved locks. Not as much for the security as I know they are easily opened, but I like having them on there so the zipper can just come open..... never been an issue...... I travel with bowling balls and couldn't imagine what that would look like if the zipper was left fully open..... I normally Fed Ex most of my bowling equipment for that very reason....

I have seen this on a daily basis...bags fall off all the time...sometimes sit there...and I have also seen bags hit by other oncoming tug drivers...

Again, have seen this happen a LOT...zippers get caught in the system ALL the time...and the amount of conveyor under MCO is mind boggling...when bags get caught, they are looking out for the million dollar conveyor system, not the $200 dollar suitcase.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS!!

Sadly after seeing the behind the scenes of how baggage is handled and travels from the ticket counter to the plane...I may never check bags again. Between baggage handlers throwing bags half way across the room, to bags being stuck in the conveyors, to falling off the tugs on the way to the planes...FedEx is looking better and better!
