We had been watching the hurricane as it gained strength and buzzed up the Florida coastline. The cone predicted it to make landfall around Myrtle Beach, and continue up the coast. So we bought some batteries and food to eat in the event that we lost power, but being 2 hours from the coast, were not terribly worried. Wynn and I ate dinner, then sat down to watch Indiana Jones on TV. The storm is pretty heavy, but we are still expecting just outer bands... typical for the Raleigh area. The power goes out about 1/2 through the movie, and we were irritated to say the least. We wait awhile, and the storm is getting pretty strong, lots of wind and rain, and big lightening. It's about 10 PM at this point. Wynn, who loves storms, decides to go into the carport to watch the storm, and I go to bed. I should mention at this point that Wynn and I rent a basement apartment from my mom. My older brother lives a few miles away in a mobile home, so we are all at my mom's house. Anyway, about 11 PM there is a HUGE crash, and my mom (sleeping with me in the basement) think a tree has come right into the bedroom with us. We go flying up the stairs, and meet my brother coming from the bedroom, and Wynn coming from the carport. We ask Wynn what hit the house, and he says a tree fell across the driveway. We say "Uh, no. Something hit the house!" We go looking, and find that the 150 foot oaks in the front yard have fallen, one across the driveway and one across the peak of the roof. The only reason it didn't come further into the house is that it landed perfectly parallel on top of a brick wall. We spent the next hour moving furniture... first away from where the tree is, in case it shifts. Then to the other end of the house, as the rain is pouring through the ceiling. Then Wynn and my furniture as the downstairs is flooding from the rain coming through the roof. We spent the remaining time... finally passed around 5 AM, listening to trees falling outside and watching the house flood. We go to bed at 5 AM in a guest bedroom upstairs, only to be awakened at 7 AM by the ceilings caving in from the rain. We go outside and find the tree knocked a hole 10x40 in the roof. The ceilings collapsed in the dining room, breakfast room, kitchen, and den. The downstairs had 6 inches of standing water. We lost 22 trees in the front and back yard alone... didn't even bother to look in the woods. We had no power or water (well water) for 10 days. Wynn and I spent 13 months living in the guest room because damage to the area was so extreme, that we were that far down on the list for a contractor. All said and done, the check from the insurance company was over $130,000 for the house and stuff we lost. I get sick to my stomach everytime a storm even LOOKS like it may come this direction. By the way, the hurricane was Cat 1when the eye passed through Raleigh.

Wow! :scared1: that is nothing like my two 'hurricane' stories.

Oh Kari! How horrible!!!! Weather can be so frightening!!! Thank God no one was hurt with all that destruction around you!! (did your brother's mobile home survive?)

We haven't experienced anything of that magnitude "weather wise", but we did live through a few VERY scary moments family-wise on 9/11....

I feel the same way. I feel instantly relaxed when I see the ocean. Just last night I went ahead & used a bunch of hilton points to book a 3 night trip out to the Island. The kids are so excited.

We have one night in Atlantic City and four nights in Cape May to look forward to in the beginning of August!:beach:

It did! He had pines, which have a large root ball, so they stayed up. He just had branches and debris to clean up. We thought the tree across the driveway had gotten my NEW car (Chrysler Cirrus about 2 months old!) because it was completely covered. Whenwe got the tree of we found it was only leaves and top branches, and the car had a few slight scratches! At that time Wynn was driving an 83 T-Top Camaro that he usually parked right where the tree fell. We put it down behind a retaining wall for added protection, so it was fine, too. We figured insurance would pay for mine... but his had liability only... thank God we moved it or we would have been out BIG! I'll see if I can dig up a few pics when I go to my mom's this weekend.

Gee.arent Hurricanes wonderful:sad2:

Living in Va beach we are prone to be in Hurricane weather. We are 12 miles from the ocean so we dont experience much flooding at all in our neigborhood. ALmost 4 yrs ago we had Hurricane Isabel come through here, we were without power for 9 days:eek: It was horrible. We did have 2 generators going, so that helped with getting on the internet;)

Those stories are just amazing.

And, 9 days without power? Shoot me now...... :rotfl:

Tell me about it;) The hardest thing was that after about 5 days, the houses across the way from us had power we didnt..Apparently we are on a different electrical circuit thingy. So why they were all cozy in their air conditioned houses, we all had the windows opened and fans going. The 2 generators did help, we could run the dishwasher and the washing machine etc..and the computer. It was a nightmare though...dont want to have to relive those 9 days again:sad2:

Let's see...where do I start? First with the "bad" stuff I guess.

Kari - that hurricane story is horrible! Thank God you all were safe though and that insurance paid out. My ice storm story seems so petty now...:sad2:

Jackie - without power for 9 days? That too is horrible and, like I said above, my story stinks.

Now the "good" stuff.

I am such an ocean gal! I absolutely love it. My family used to go to Ocean City, Maryland, just about every year with a year or 2 in between going elsewhere. I've been to a lot of different beaches but I have to admit that I really like Cape Canaveral one of the best (behind Bermuda) and the two worst were in California (only because the Pacific Ocean is so dang cold) and in New Jersey (because I didn't like having to pay to use the public beach). I love to swim out in the ocean. Well, maybe just float a bit and hop a few waves...;)

I just wanted to join in the chatting. My birthday is September 18. I think I will be turning 34.

DM - I am still in Florida. I know it seems like a long vacation, but where we stay it doesn't cost me anything because it is a friend's beach house that they don't really use that much. I decided to stay as long as possible, because when I get home I have a house to unpack and that will be so much work. I also have decided to homeschool my older boys, so I need as much relaxation as I can store up for what I have ahead of me.

We are totally a beach family. We are one minute from the beach so we have been going a lot. We are also about 15 minutes from Cocoa Beach so we go there a lot too. My kids can spend the whole day on the beach. My older boys love the boogie (sp?) boards. The twins have gotten braver this year and like going in the water.

Kari your hurricane story is just terrible. Since I live in TN the only kind of weather we have that scares me is tornadoes. We have had some times where we were hiding out in the bathroom, but thankfully they always have touched down other places.

I am working on my Disney photopass CD. I don't think I can download any pictures until I get home since this is not my computer.

Hey! Enjoy florida, my nephew just got back from that area.

We see tornado's more than anything here and it's just well :scared1:

Your birthday is a day before my mom's.

Sarah...where in Florida are you? I have been to the Cocoa Beach area so I'm a bit familiar with the surroundings there. I have a good restaurant to recommend in Cocoa Beach if you want.

You have to order the PhotoPass CD. It's not download-able. So you can do all your editing on your computer there and then have it sent to your home when you're done.

So for all you photopass CD people. We have only a few that we got. So everybody gets to view for 30 days? Then they want you to order them? Is that how it works? So its not possible to download those to your own computer. I am guessing its how they make money? We found 2 of those photo pass cards last week. As you can see, not a huge priority for me LOL

DM - Don't have to pay for all the public beaches in New Jersey - just some of them... and the BEST beach in NJ is free... Wildwood and Wildwood Crest... very wide sandy beach and the ocean doesn't have any major "drops", so you can walk out pretty far into the waves. My favorite still is Cape May, at the tip of NJ, but you DO have to pay for that beach...:beach:

OKay I'm killing time as a video for my TR uploads. I'll tell my two hurricane stories and hey one is Disney related!

Story 1: Hurricane Andrew

Okay this is my Disney related one. I was down in Disney when Hurricane Andrew hit Florida. My aunt was down in FT. Lauderdale. Well we were staying in the Contemporary in the Tower. Well I had just taken a bath and got dressed and boom the lights went out. We climbed down eight flight of stairs and got down to the main floor. Well we stayed down there for several hours than once it had passed we had to drive down and pick up my aunt. We could only go halfway.

Story 2: whatever came through in '05

The hurricane came through and well was more rain than anything. This was my second day of college. I didn't even drive to school the winds were strong enough I would have trouble driving my small little car. Schools were closed. Well that's when I learned just how wonderful our drainage system was at Tech. It stinks. I hate when it rains cause my jeans can get soaked up to my knees. Just wasn't a pleasant second day of class.
