Discover Apple Pay 10% Back - In Store Purchase

So, let me get this straight. Disney world is on the list, so if we use apple pay while in Disney to say renew our AP's it should work. But, if I tried to do it ahead of time online it wouldn't? I have never used apple pay before. But I assume if I went to guest relations and asked to renew pass and used it there it would work.

Yes, I think you're right. Another option would be to visit Staples or BJ's and purchase Disney gift cards (at BJ's they are discounted). Then renew your AP online with the Disney gift cards. Or you could load the gift cards to a Disney Vacation Account and then pay online with that.

Side note: I was just told by Discover to call once I receive my new card and have them add the Apply pay promo to my account.

That is a good idea! I don't have a BJ's near me, but there is a staples. I was also thinking once I get to Disney I could buy gift cards there with the apple pay and use them to pay for dining. I really wanted to renew our AP's soon because our 60 day window is approaching for FP plus our AP's expire a few days before our trip, I wasn't sure how that would work out if I made FP without renewing first. I am assuming it is ok since you have 30 days after expiration to renew. But I have only renewed once before and did it online ahead of time.

So help me understand if I went to Target and bought a 1000 gift card paid with apple pay, I can then go to target online buy 1000 in Disney gift cards( separate transactions) and save the extra 5% from my red card?

You can't buy them at a Target store because they don't allow contactless payments (Apple pay).

They may sell the at Staples or Office Depot / office max

If you can't find target gift cards, buy an eBay gift card, use it to buy a target gift card and then use it online to buy with the red card as default for 5% off the Disney gift cards

Heres another idea . . . go to Walgreens and buy a Visa gift card (loadable up to $500 with a $4.95 fee). Then buy discounted Target cards on Cardpool or Raise (after linking through a portal like ebates or topcashback). I think that would be a better discount on the Target cards since ebay charges shipping. However, if you do buy via ebay, link to ebay via ebates to get an extra 1% and then ebay bucks rewards you 2% (you must register for ebay bucks first). I did notice that Staples has $50 ebay cards (Ebay only allows you to use 8 cards per transaction).

Are there issues using Visa gift cards on Cardpool/Raise? I tried to test this yesterday with a registered Visa gift card. The transaction went through but its still "processing." Not sure if it has to do with the fact I'm paying with a Visa GC or the fact that Cardpool is just slow these days.

I thought someone said they used apple pay at target all the time?

So
I thought someone said they used apple pay at target all the time?

Someone did say that, but the extra 10% is only for the store listed and target is not listed in that way. It is listed in the apps so my understanding is you could pay through the app which would not qualify for the extra 10% off.

My understanding is that Apple Pay in the target app works, but they have disabled the readers in the physical stores.

So heres an over the top question about this promo . . . is the $10K purchase limit PER CUSTOMER or PER ACCOUNT? In other words, could I earn the rewards on the new Discover Miles card I have coming, and then link Apple Pay to my other (older) Discover account and repeat?

I don't know, you may need to call Discover. I didn't see that in anything I read online.

Just a heads up. iOS 9 comes out today at 1PM Eastern time. After it is installed you should be able to add your discover card to apple pay.

I received a targeted offer from ebay this morning for 5x the normal cash back in ebay bucks - so thats 10%. Its good through tomorrow. So, if you can get the new IOS set up today, you could go to Staples and buy ebay gift cards as J Casto had mentioned previously (my Staples has $50 ebay cards). Then buy your Target GC's on ebay (after linking through the ebates portal) from the Giftcardmall seller (there will be shipping charges). Then buy your Dis GC's with the Target cards. Heres the math assuming $400 worth of ebay cards purchased at Staples:

Discover cash back on Staples purchase w/ Apple pay (normal 1% + 10% bonus) = $44
Target gift card purchase on ebay - 10% ebay bucks rebate = $40
Ebates rebate on above = $4
Less shipping (assumes 8 $50 cards purchased since they are out of the $100 cards) = -$10
With 5% discount on Dis GC on Target site, you net $421 in Dis GC, so savings there = $21

Total savings = $99
% saved ($99/$421) = 23.5%

If I have two Discover cards, can I earn twice the rewards?
Discover says yes.

How many Discover cards can one person have?
Two. Once you’ve had your first Discover card for more than a year, you can apply for a second one.

Here's the best deal I can figure out using this, not using the double cash back.

Purchase $475 visa gift cards at Walgreens for $479.95 at purchase.
* 11% Cash Back Earned $52.79

Net Out of pocket at this point. $427.14

Use the visa gift card at Kroger to purchase $475 in target gift cards earning 4X fuel points. This should net you 1 $1 off fill up and 1 $0.90 fill up.
Assuming you were going to purchase gas anyway and can max out the 35 gallons on each fill up, you would save $66.50. I know most people, myself included don't have 35 gallon tanks, but I could easily get 24 gallons if I filled up a couple gas cans I have. Technically it is per car, but if I could fill up mine and my wifes cars at the same time I could do the 35 gallons.

So theoretically, if I can save the $66.50, I have an out of pocket of $360.64.

Turn the Target gift cards into $500 disney gift cards via target using red card as default.

360.64/500.00 = .72128. So that is paying 72% of face value or 28% off.

***If you have a new discover card and can get the double cash back bonus, then when you get the additional $52.79 after your first year, you would have net out of pocket of $307.85. So same math is 61.5% of face value or a 38.5% savings.

Very nice!! I do something similar at Kroger (but without the Applypay bonus). I buy a $100 Visa gift card with a $5.95 fee (NOT the loadable ones). Then I use that to purchase a Target GC. You earn the 4x on both purchases (including the fee). After backing out the fee and buying the Dis GC's at a discount, the total discount comes to 26.7%. (I do take fuel cans for the extra gas to max out)

As to my earlier response I received from Discover that it would work as long as you are using apple pay, i.e. in-app payments. It turns out that Discover cards are disabled for in-app usage. You can literally only use apple pay in physical stores.

So, even though it is mentioned later in this thread that Discover mentioned to them that it is in-store only for the promotion...you can't use apple pay in an app anyway.

I was thinking about that. I applied and have the new card coming now. My DH has a discover card too, I could have him apply for a second one, but realistically that would be a lot to spend - each of us $10,000. I don't think that is going to happen, so I will just stick with the one (double promotion )for me. I could have him use his card and still get the 10% back if we decide we want to stock up on that many target or disney gift cards....

Pillow,

Were you able to use your Visa gift card on Raise or Cardpool? I didn't think these gift card websites accepted Visa gift cards. Would be great if they did.
