If you were to go up to the garment district in NYC, you'd find that the designers all copy from one another. (i've worked in retail for 30 years, most of them as a manager/groupmgr). As an example, INC swim is actually designed off of Calvin Klein. Did you ever wonder why, when you walk into a department store, everything is pink or green?
You do have a point here, but that's why Calvin Klein is the superior brand--the really great ideas originated with them and that's why people are willing to pay more for Calvin Klein and not the knockoffs--people put more value on the original. Also, Gymboree quite clearly copies **a lot** of their designs, themes, and garment details from one of my favorite Euro brands, Catimini--usually a season or two after the Cati version has been released. It's quite funny because then a lot of lesser brands like Carter's, Circo, etc. then copy Gymboree.
My thoughts on case-ing have changed a lot over the past year. I really don't see a problem with someone drawing inspiration from another source (a small element or detail) and you're quite right that this is a regular practice in the garment industry, but recreating something verbatim can get really get grating. Your own creativity needs to come into play at some point...Know what I mean?
IMO, we are just drawing inspiration from others on this board. Aren't we just putting our heads together to come up with great ideas. I absolutely understand and agree that someone should not be making an exact (or similar) outfit and sell it as thier own. There should be some acknowledgement to the origional designer. But that should be between the designer and seller. NOT on this board. If you don't want someone to CASE your idea, don't post it.
I have got to tell you this....the direction this conversation is going tonight is very depressing. I have been "on" this thread back from the original one and my daughter, AliKat99, was on it from the beginning. If the "oldies" remember I was one of the first ones to look for fabric inspiration in bedsheets, made one of the first 3D Pirate Mickey appliques, did the first Pumpkin Mickey Head applique. I have helped others when I could from sharing some of the sewing techniques I have picked up in my 50 years of sewing, or scanning into the computer a needed page of a lost Princess dress pattern guide I happened to have in my stash. I have even learned a few things like the Dental Floss gathering trick. I did my first Frankenpattern when I was 12 years old when I combined elements from 3 different ones to make myself a dress. My first custom outfit where I designed my own pattern was for Alikat99 when she was about 6 months old and I was 18 yrs old. When a person uses a commercial pattern or even several commercial patterns there will be outfits that look VERY similar ESPECIALLY when your creation is themed around Uncle Walt's creations. OK I will get off my Soap Box now....Nana
Thanks for all you help Nana. I too have used sheets for fabric. If you looked at my quilted jackets, you could see Esmerelda, Herc and Cinderella sheets. But usually the patterns just too big for what I need. And I've also Franken pattern (although I never used that term until I learned it here), all prior to being on this board. I appreciate all your help and links.
Sally there are actually QUITE a few. Photobucket is quite easy to use if you need to see the picture bigger and more clearly, you just click the individual picture.
I have tried that, but I can't see to get it to enlarge. Some of th stamps are waaaay too small.
SallyfromDE Im so sorry- the auction is over, I thought the # was in the picture i got off ebay. maybe if you google it. I found that pattern by ebay searching for "Simplicity Princess"
I want to keep an eye out for that pattern. I LOVE it. I have a peice of lavender Cinderella fabric and need a special dress for the Castle. Thankfully, I've still plenty of time.
I hope that makes sense. Just my thoughts and how I feel. Goodness knows I've been inspired by each and everyone of you and have made things similar to several, but I would only sell what was my own design.
It absolutely makes sense and I agree 100%.

That made me chuckle!!
I spent the morning sewing, while the kids were outside playing.
This is Alexis' Nassau dress. I found this bahama fabric and bought it, even though it wasn't a great color...but this is what I did with it. Alexis picked out the fabric she wanted out of the sewing cabinet. I'm not thrilled with it, but it's good enough for bumming around Nassau.
I like your dress. Is this the Daisy Kingdom? I love that pattern. I have to find something to make with it.
