Disboards Dissapointment

Totally agree. I think they're definitely too quick to lock threads down over on the restaurant boards - people can get quite passionate about ADR discussions. But I always see healthy discussions as a good thing (as long as people don't resort to name-calling and such).

....or tipping. LOL!

Any thread or post that mentions personal tipping habits is clamped down immedietely!

As for this place...the only arguing I see is over line cutting and parking. And even then it is rearely "mean" just somewhat passionate. I just stay away because I really have no opinions about queues and cutting and stuff.

So you're disappointed in all the heated arguments that go on, yet you start a thread that has a pretty good chance of doing the very same thing? Alright then.

Like people have said, compared to most other forums these ones are VERY tame. I think part of the problem is many of the members here are not on other forums and are older and therefore aren't used to how forums tend to be. Right or wrong, the internet's anonymity creates the situation. It's hardly a DIS thing.

I'm not sure why so many people keep commenting on how the DISboards aren't as "bad" as other forums. What does that have to do with the DISboards? Just because people are treated even worse on other boards doesn't make it less offensive here or any more acceptable.

I understand how you feel, there are times that seeing the responses here make me sad but honestly DIS is just like everything else, you have to ignore the bad and seek the good you know?

I also would love to see your TR! Seriously!

Like I already mentioned, I feel that people aren't used to the way forums tend to be. I don't really find most things on here offensive because I know that its the nature of the internet. So that's what it has to do with the DISboards, people act as if that kind of "discussion" only exists here. My point was it doesn't.

Yeah...I never understood why it's such a taboo thing to talk about tipping. People generally just want to do the right thing and are looking for some guidelines to make sure they are not stiffing people, and at the same time, not being foolish with their money also.

This board is so mild-mannered and sweet compared to others I have seen!
You would be eaten alive at the SCRAPBOOKING board! I'm not kidding.

Okay, I'm sorry, but this is seriously cracking me up! Those ruthless scrapbookers!

I know there are negative people/posts out there - but try to just ignore them. I'd say 80% of the threads I read are positive - and those that aren't, I try to ignore. But sometimes I do think, "C'mon, people! Be nice!" Especially when someone is honestly trying to get some feedback about a question, and people go on the attack. Jeez, folks, do you you really need to question someone's parenting skills when they ask a simple question like "At what age do you stop using a stroller?" C'mon, folks. Be nice!

I know what you mean, OP. Nowadays, Even when you post a question, you get flamed for not searching the forum first. I'm generally one who tries to search first, and sometimes it's just not that easy.

I think maybe the negative nellies have been here so long that they don't have patience for people new to WDW and the Disboards.

I left the boards for a while a few years back - really just because I didn't have a trip planned - and when I came back, I picked up the negative vibe IMMEDIATELY. It really took over the whole feel of the boards. If you opinion is not theirs, they are quick to tell you that you're wrong.

So I use it for informational purposes now only. Because there are still a lot of really great people here willing to share and help you out.

We are like any other family... we have our share of PITAs and crazy uncles. But for the most part, I've found this side of the board to be rather fun.

Something else to consider is to look at the number of views a discussion thread has verses just the replies and number of replies. IE, just because there are some negative/hateful replies doesn't mean folks aren't getting value from the replies (both positive and negative).

That said, I really do wish there was a little more basic politeness. Disagreements are natural and not everyone thinks the same. Therefore, there will be differences of opinion. However, there's no reason that differences of opinion on anything related to Disney should result in "flames". This is about enjoyment, vacation, fun, etc and should be kept in that context.

That's because you are supposed to read and only post questions about tipping in the 4,000 page thread. ;)

Because don't you know, everyone has time to read through the entire thread? ;)

They really need to get rid of that "sticky" and let tipping questions remain on the main board.

But that's totally off-topic to this thread.

I actually try to stay away from the threads that I know will become locked or heated in argument! ;)

I come to the DIS to get my Disney-fix and sometimes to look for answers to questions I have regarding certain things in WDW.

But I know which threads to stay away from!! For the most part, the folks here are extremely kind people who love Disney. Unfortunately, there are the snarky folks who say rude things because they can hide behind a computer and a screen-name.

I have been on the DIS for 5.5 years and have learned ALOT about WDW/DCL.
I have met some wonderful people here but just like in the Real World, there will be some folks who just like to :stir::stir::stir::stir:!

We just returned from our first trip and I would love to share our experience and excitment.

Well, make a trip report and put it in that section. It would be inappropriate to put it in the Theme Parks section, just like it's inappropriate to put a trip report in the main Disneyland section. Trip Report forum is the place for your story!

(said by a Disneyland forum denizen who uses the rest of the board b/c I've now traveled to WDW and Universal, and it's amazing how many people use the WHOLE board!)

The problem, of course, is that one person's witty and insightful response is another person's flame. And vice versa. There's no "one size fits all" measurement for this.

Probably only a very small percentage of posters intend to be mean or offensive, but the rest of us sometimes end up offending others without meaning to. Some of us could stand to be more considerate. Some of us could stand to be less sensitive. "Talking" in a forum, with no verbal or visual cues, only exacerbates the problem, and the emoticons are a poor substitute. ;) No, wait...I meant: :thumbsup2

In the end, freedom of speech can be an offensive pain in the butt. But it's certainly better than the alternative.

I think you've only been here since the tipping thread was created. Therefore, you don't know how NASTY those threads could be. This way the info AND the fighting are contained to ONE place where you can go if you choose.

And no, not everyone wants to do the right thing, tipping-wise. And when someone doesn't, those who do are absolutely ruthless in telling them how absolutely wrong they are.

Be GLAD there's a tipping thread, seriously....

You don't have to read anything before you type your question. Someone will answer your question soon. That's why it's that long of a thread, because very few people read what comes before their question.

I began lurking on these boards in 1999, and officially became a member in 2001. I have seen a huge difference in the last couple of years. I don't frequent these boards on a regular basis, mostly when I am coming up to a trip (we try to go every year...sometimes every 2 years).

I feel like the simplest question can get the most outrageous remarks. I have read replies to questions that I have had that have left me speechless. Why the judgments? Why the rude comments? I had a question, didn't know the answer, and thought coming to these boards, which were set up for questions to be answered, could be answered with dignity and respect for a fellow WDW traveller. I try to treat all with dignity and respect, even the faceless people I meet on these boards.

I am so sorry that you feel that you cannot post your TR. I love reading those....there is always a moment on those TR that make me smile, tug at my heart, and make me feel so excited for an upcoming trip. Know that there are far more nice people on these boards than mean people.

I LOVE all things Disney and I found the Disboards when planning my first Disneyland Vacation 4 years ago. I was in heaven. I have spent countless hours just reading and reading on the forums. It's a GREAT tool for planning. And I thought for discussing all things related to your Disney trips. This trip was our first to the World and I switched from the Disneyland side to the World side of the boards, and I must say, I don't feel comfortable here. Every other post has someone flaming someone else. There are so many mean natured comments on this side that it breaks my heart, and makes me say I don't want to read or post on this side. It's sad because there are so many good natured, helpful and knowledgable people on this side, but they get over shadowed by the negative.

We just returned from our first trip and I would love to share our experience and excitment. As I come here to do so, I realize I don't think I'm willing to put my story out there, because I know someone will chime in with something negative and just put a damper on my Disney Spirit.

I can't wait until our next Disneyland trip where I will relish the family like community of those boards, and be an active participant again.

Sorry to hear that one person disagreeing with you could cause you not to post your thoughts and observations. I understand though. After a return from the World a few years ago, I posted an observation that I thought was fairly benign. I quickly found out that I touched a nerve for many others and was quite surprised at the some of the comments. You are right, not everyone was "nice" about how they worded their opinion. At first, I was upset and didn't want to post anymore. However, I realized that each issue needs supporters on either side or the DIS will just be taken over by bully's who push their opinions realizing that many are fearful of "flames". If you post an opinion or observation that many don't agree with, I find that you will also have just as many supporters! :thumbsup2

That said, I agree with other posters....go ahead and post it to the trip report board. That's an appropriate place for it and you should receive lots of support from those who like to hear about others' experiences.

And....glad to hear you had a great time!

:goodvibes:lmao: Thanks for the chuckle!;)

You are so very right! I hope you all know that I do realize there are so many wonderful people on here. I don't mean to imply that everyone fits the stereotype that i'm talking about. And the good should outweigh the bad. I guess came on here this morning so excited to come post our story, but first as I was reading through some other posts, it just made me sad and kind of put a damper on my excitement.

Disney is not the 'real world', not in the same sense at least. It's a place where we can forget all our worries and just live in the moment and the magic. Trips don't go perfectly, we all make different choices and may not agree with everyone else...but we all share that love of Disney, otherwise you wouldn't/shouldn't be on here. I think the world and the boards would be a nicer place if people could just truly try to be nice and helpful without being mean. I guess I should just have thicker skin. Disney is my Happy Place:goodvibes

OP - I totally hear what you are saying. I'm always wondering if people would really say things in person or if they only write it in a post. Disney is my happy place too and I have to step away from the boards (or certain threads!) sometimes to keep it that way. I've found the resort threads are very nice and so are (most) trip reports. And I have definitely found certain posters that I want to stay away from. I'm so glad I heard about the blocking feature!!

I'm not sure why so many people keep commenting on how the DISboards aren't as "bad" as other forums. What does that have to do with the DISboards? Just because people are treated even worse on other boards doesn't make it less offensive here or any more acceptable.

I completely agree with this. You sound like my kind of DISer :thumbsup2

I think I'm about to become one of those people you don't like for a moment. Were you posting this so people would try to cheer you up and then beg you to post your trip report? Cause if you don't want to post it then simply don't, no need to announce that to everyone.

I love, love, love, WDW and have been on the DIS for almost 10 years now. This is a community and like any other it is made from a wide variety of people. I think the discourse found here is what makes it interesting and the "arguments" seem to be where I learn the most. But that's just me.
