Why is it that when a poster lists accomplished, professional credentials, the assumption is that the poster is male?

Puzzles me.

What assumptions do folks make around here that puzzle you?

Since we have more East coasters on he board, I think they are sometimes shocked how different the culture, norms, and social expectations are out west!

I actually think that unless the poster gives me a dead giveaway that he is male (like popdaddy or myself), I will assume that the poster is female.

The massive amount of people that post DH instead of DW is a dead giveaway also.

Most people assume that any poster is Female, unless it's Pop Daddy, Chuck or Robo, or they've said they were male/have pics in their sig etc. I'm male, but I know that the DIS is about 99% female, so I always assume female, unless it's incredibely obvious that they're male.

Plus screennames. Some you just know are male and some you think are male but aren't. DMRick, for example. I thought that was a male but is a female. I had people think I was a male when I first came here. Some names I can't tell so I assume and depending on writing style or use of DH/DW etc., I usually assume female because there are more females than males here.

I can see what you mean there.

That people still think I know what is going on around here, LOL. :happytv: Those days are long, long gone. I still get PM's from folks at times, asking about this or that. I, most of the time, have no idea. :confused3

Buck? A male?? :lmao:

Judy, you talkin' about Idaho? :duck:

Has that happened to you?

I'm a physician, and most of the physicians I know of posting here are female. Between those two things, I tend to assume physician posters are female.

Perhaps its the "nutty professor" part of your name that leads to that assumption. Makes me think of the movie.

I'm not sure why, but "nuttylawprofessor" just sounds male to me. I think it reminds me of that old nutty professor movie (he was a dude). Maybe if your nickname was "princessnuttylawprofessor"??? :rotfl:

A dangerous assumption is that any personal info you post here is going to be safe just because it's a "feel good Disney board." I feel bad for people when they get burnt doing that.

I recently came to that realization myself from Facebook. I have a friend who moved there 20 some years ago and we've been chatting. I've told him numerous times what a learning experience it's been hearing about the vastly different cultural norms. I had no idea.

And for me, not just west vs east, but regions all over! I'm often stunned by what is so normal in one area is unheard of in another.

I think most dis'ers are mom's, middle class, (mostly white.. not trying to be discrimating), with 2-3 kids.

Unless i'm on the gay/lesbian boards. That's where the guys seem to hang out.

I sometimes wonder if my lack of a signature makes people assume that I've been "bad" on the DIS and had that privilege taken away. But I just don't take time or really care about having a signature picture/saying. I've never gotten points. And some people may be horrified to hear this, but I've also deleted my tags more than once on purpose.

It doesn't really bother me and I probably do it myself, but people tend to assume that everyone has kids. I have been asked several times if my avatar is my daughter. I don't have kids, and that picture is of me in the late '70s :teeth:.

Some users seem to assume that everyone knows who certain posters are. For instance, there is a user who is apparently extremely well-known on Theme Parks, but I never heard of him until sometime recently :confused3. But most of the people on Theme Parks have probably never heard of even the most well-known posters here on the CB that we are all familiar with.

Some people assume that the CB is just a mean, scary place. Or that the Budget Board is only made up of freakishly extreme tight-wads. But I assume things about various forums, too. There is one particular DIS forum which to me is the strangest of them all .

You mean you don't know what's going on around here? :lmao: Well, you can still answer a lot of questions, that is for sure! For instance, can you help me "copy and paste" something? :rotfl2:

I think it is the "Buck" that makes'em think that. While I knew you were a man, DanMurphy, I thought you were 25---remember that??!! ;) Anyway, I'm so glad we are friends. :goodvibes

I thought Robo was revealed to be female last year.....:confused3 Or maybe Robo was just playing with us....

Robo is the one I never heard of until somewhat recently. And I'm not sure who Chuck is.

One thing I've noticed was around Christmas last year. Everybody just assumed everybody on the boards celebrated Christmas (not trying to stir up anything) but believe it or not some people don't. When the ones who celebrated Christmas would post things like this is "Jesus' birthday", etc. and I pointed out I didn't celebrate Christmas because he was not born on that day and the backlash I received was surprising. However, I am a very open minded person and after being on this board I see that most people just are not open minded. People still have mindsets about female/male roles, etc. I notice as well. It is surprising and sad to me.....

Until I added my name most people thought I was male. I guess Shark is not a feminine word.
