Hi All,

My family and i are going to WDW in December. My Mom is considering renting a scooter for the week, and I just need some info about them. On Walker Mobility's website, they show how you can disassemble the scooter to transport it in your car. Is this possible with all of the scooters? We're renting a house outside of Disney, and we only have cars. Any extra info on this?

Thanks!
Tammy

Welcome.
I can't directly answer your question since my DD has her own wheelchair that she brings, but from what I have read on the boards, it appears that not all scooters from all the companies come apart. My suggestion is to make sure that you request one that comes apart when you are reserving it.

I get a scooter from Walker on every trip (for over a year now). It helps to have a full-size sedan or a SUV. If you have an SUV or mini-van you should be able to take two scooters. However, there is no problem in getting one into a car trunk. I don't know of any normal car that can fit two ECVs.

Pulling up the seat is first, although it goes in the car last. The two battery packs have quick disconnects which pull straight out when you squeeze on the sides. They go in the trunk first (I put one in the front right side of the trunk, with the second right behind it). There is another quick disconnect to the motor. This is not as intuitive; you grab the knurled knob and twist it counterclockwise. Note that the only part of this connector you want to twist is the knob right where it attaches to the motor assembly. Then pull the T-Handle behind the seat support and the entire motor/rear wheel section comes off. Put the motor section in the front of the trunk on the left side (there should be sufficient room if you put the batteries in correctly). Normally I will pull up on the knob in the rear, as well as put the switch in the "free-wheel" position before putting this section in the trunk. This allows rolling the section to the front. Then pull up on the lever below the left handlebar to drop the entire front steering bar down. Make sure you collapse the basket. Then put this section in the trunk, with the front of the section as close to either side of the trunk. Finally put the seat in the trunk. If you have done everything right, you should be able to fit some other small stuff in the trunk as well as close it easily.

There are a couple of simple tricks to reassembling. The back of the main section fits easily in a slot on the front of the motor section. Once the two parts are matched, lift up on the T-Handle for the front section to go down and release the handle and it will lock in place. The connector to the motor has a small (about 3/32 inch) yellow paint spot on it. This spot goes on the top when you put the plug into the socket. Then twist the front knob until you feel it latch. After you raise the steering bar you will put the battery packs back in. Note each of them has advertising on them. The advertising side goes to the outsides while the electric sockets go to the inside. When you put the seat back on it is easiest if you do it from the back. It takes some getting used to; you might have someone guide you while looking at the bottom. Last point is the knob must be down and the switch forward (out of the freewheel position) for the ECV to work.

Anyway, once you have done it a couple of times it becomes easy. By the way, the heaviest part is 39 pounds (and I think it is the motor and rear wheel assembly.

Whoa, that sounds complicated...
I'm sure it's not that bad...if you know what you are doing  :(

most things sound pretty complicated when you are reading them, especially when you don't have the item in from of you to see how to do it. Taking apart my DD's wheelchair sounds pretty complicated too, but once we had done it a few times, it wasn't bad at all.

It takes me about two minutes to disassemble the scooter and load it into the car, and about three minutes to get it out of the car and reassemble it.
