Disappointing desserts YC concierge

We just returned from a 4 night stay at YC concierge and found the dessert selection far from magical. We were present for 3 of the 4 evenings and the same mediocre choice of sweets was offered each night. This consisted of cookies, vanilla cupcakes, brownies and rice krispie squares. My sis said the cupcake was inedible, niece found brownie stale and I only tried an oatmeal cookie which was not impressive either. I think part of our disappointment stems from a comparison to our only other stay at YC concierge about 3 years ago. There was a delicious coconut cake that stands out in my memory as well as some gourmet pastries. We have not tried concierge at any other Disney resorts. I would be interested to know what kinds of desserts are currently offered elsewhere. Is what we experienced standard fare now? I did discuss this with a CM and was told that a few times a week the lounge was sent other dessert items but it was at the discretion of the kitchen. In all fairness the quality of the appetizers was more in keeping with our past experience. Some of the items included a tasty hummus dip, a spinach dip that sis liked, several cheeses, and 2 warm pasta dishes, to name a few. When time permits I hope to do a more thorough trip report. I look forward to hearing from others regarding their concierge food experiences, particularly in regard to desserts. Thanks for listening.

Hi!

We just did a May/June WL/YC concierge stay. The WL had warm desserts (cobblers, pies), pastries and cookies, so we were a bit disappointed with the YC selection. I also asked and got the same answer-- up to the kitchen.

We always liked the YC late afternoon/dinner dishes, although we found that the WL offerings were more substantial (pork chops, chicken, beef with a vegetable side dish or mac and cheese).. A couple of nights we skipped dinner at the WL after we ate at the lounge, which we never expected.

Did you enjoy the rest of your stay. I hope so!:D

I would have to agree with the positive reports on the food in the Wilderness Lodge's concierge. I think it is the best selection I've had in concierge anywhere. Our stay was in December of 2002 so I hope nothing has changed, but we were given many dessert offerings (warm desserts, eclairs, tortes, chocolate dipped fruit), and their soups were exceptionally delicious (I remember a portuguese bean soup that I think may have been the best soup I've ever tried). There were plenty of snacks all day and the evening hors d'oeuvres and desserts really stood out. The concierge staff was exceptionally nice as well.

I haven't tried the YC concierge (I will be trying BC in November), but I've tried AKL's concierge. A lot of people had really raved about it, but I thought WL's had been better. However, the desserts were nothing like what was described at YC--there were lots of different small round tarts, brownies, (no warm desserts that I remember). And even after the desserts were put away, more cookies were put out (that were excellent). I didn't find the dinner hors d'ouevres as good as WLs, but it was just my tastes I think, because it was African fare and many others love it (dunbar chicken skewers, hummus and pita, other appetizers I didn't know the name of). I just liked the high quality soup, meat and potatoes (or pasta) type cuisine at WL better. At AKL there was a cappucino machine that I really enjoyed, and I loved the yogurt smoothie dispenser. We also had a great view of the animals :). Based on room alone, I would recommend AKL over WL, just because our AKL room was large with a fabulous view, while the WL's was much smaller and we had a view of trees (pretty, but not like an African savannah :) ). A concierge stay split between the two would be ideal :).

Sorry YC didn't offer better desserts. I've tried concierge at many other hotels but only WL and AKL at WDW, so that's all I can offer. Were they friendly at YC? My last (and only)stay at YC I found the staff less friendly than average (particularly for Disney resorts) so I was hesitant about staying there again for that reason. Next trip we are trying the Beach club side.

Thanks for your replies. It sounds like some of the other concierge lounges still offer "special" desserts. We really felt like the YC should be ashamed of their dessert buffet. The staff was accomodating enough, not effusive. One CM refused to let me take 2 beers to my room for my sister and myself, since she might be underaged. I'm 51, what are the chances? That annoyed and surprised me. The coffee and the hot water dispensers didn't keep either hot enough. The mint iced tea was delightful, though. I'm not a whiner but it really was so inferior to our last stay that we couldn't help but be disappointed. My sister was able to get an excellent travel agent rate of $265 a night. I kept thinking of how incensed I would have been if I had been paying the usual rates of $400 and up. We had a few other snafus that weren't food related which I'll save for another post. We still had a wonderful trip, lots of good meals and fun times. We just won't be giving the YC concierge any future business.

I have to agree with you that the desserts were mediocore at best. We were there for the week of July 4th so I thought that it might have something to do with it being so busy. It will be our last time at the Yacht Club concierge as well. It was okay, but it was not great.

So sad to hear about their desserts now! We were there last summer and loved the desserts. They had cheesecakes, tarts, cakes, etc. I wonder why they decided to switch.
