How do you get a great room location ?

We have just got back from a 9 night stay at Okw.

We made our reservation 8 months ago requesting buildings 23 to 29 .

Ended up room 3827 2 bed lock off worst view ever (of road).
No rooms were available to switch to.

Any tips for submitting specific rooms.

We would love a nice balcony view of the golf course .

How do you get these rooms

One word....LUCK. Sorry you did not get what you requested, I wish you better luck next time. Don't know how you could ever guarantee that you get a good view. We got a good one at OKW recently and did not make a request. I have heard that all resorts are booked solid now so it is no wonder you could not switch. I hope you enjoyed your trip anyway....Lacee

If you really want a "nice balcony view of the golf course", my advice is to request that instead of specific buildings. Room assigner really doesn't know why you selected those particular buildings. It's also a good idea to check in as early in the day as you can - chance of getting requests is greater then.

Hoping you have better luck next time -

The best views I've had at OKW is when I requested water view. Some of the golf course views are surrounding by trees to protect the buildings from ball hits on the fairway. I had a bad view in building 28 when I requested 23 to 26, it was blocked by trees. Building 29 is also covered in trees. After that I requested water view and got great views in 31 & 43. We were in 40 this year, was still nice but close to the road. If you want a view of a golf hole, specificially request that.

It really comes down to luck. What time of day did you check-in? If they are using "room ready" you basically get whats available when you check-in, they don't pre-assign by requests or date of reservation. Unfortunately, someone has to get the less desirable views. With a 9 night stay, I might have been tempted to pay the cleaning fee ($40 in a 2bedroom) and move the next day if something better was available.

Sorry you didn't get a better view with your room. Unfortunately, with the way the buildings are at OKW, there are definately some rooms that are tree-covered, too close to the road etc etc. And the same is true in other resorts, so it is the luck of the draw, and someone always has to have those rooms.

But be careful what you wish for - last time we asked for golf course view and got that - it was great. BUT - we were under a Grand Villa and noise was horrible. I could have done without the view!

Better luck next time. I would ask for water view also.

We are at OKW right now. We have never gotten a "good" room until sort of now. Yup, it's all about the luck. And this room is not great, but compared to what we have ever gotten here, it is great. AND, this room would not have a decent view if it were not for the obvious very large tree that was recently cut down.

Thanks everyone for your comments , they have been helpful .

I will probably request a water view for our May vacation.

With us travelling from England we don't arrive until 5.00 pm so an early check in is not an option.:D

AS has been said you have to be specific in your requests. Twice now I have requested "near a pool" and got that request- both times the pool was closed for refurbishment. Next time I will specify that I would like a pool with water in it. Actually this list trip I had requested turtle pond area but when we had to add the Saturday before hurricane Jeanne it may have changed where we ended up and I was just glad to not have to move after the first day and especially glad that I was able to get the extra night at all. The view was of trees and the road coming in and out of the resort and the parking lot (bldg 14) I think the back side of the building proably had a golf course view. The best part was that there was no noise from the storm - it was amazing to watch the trees sway and not hear the wind. It is generally about luck in room assignments and it seems like things average out over the visits - some great and some only good - after all you're at Disney in a DVC unit - how bad can it be?

kathleena................I feel your pain. Twice now we requested close to HH and yes, it was honored (somewhat) but we got stuck under some extremely LOUD guest above us...............this past summer just put the cherry on the cake for dh............he was ready to sell after that one!!! We had to call and complain several times and we weren't the only ones!!

My only request now is TOP FLOOR!! I rather look at a tree branch or a road and have some quiet time at night then have to listen to running families above me!!!!

We were at OKW last week and were in room 5014. We loved having a bottom floor room and it had a decent view of the golf course, but the carpet had fleas, but we didn't realize where the bug bites were coming from until the end of the trip. Plus, our toilet broke. They quickly came and fixed it, but the next morning, the bathroom was flooded because they didn't fasten a nut. Next time we will request a room by the water, but I want to stay at one of the Epcot locations next. Okw is hard for people in wheel chairs because they have to take a bus to everything. My mother and father in law both used electronic scooters and half way through the trip they did not want to go anywhere because of the hassle. I should have checked I guess.

Amen Rosemary!

TravelingJen24 - that is too bad about the hcp situation. Not something I had ever thought of. Wonder if it would be similar at other resorts - as you still have to wander a bit to get to the buses - unless you take the scooters into Epcot from BWV or BCV.

And the fleas - yikes - I am wondering about all the hurricanes where they did allow some pets. I wondered at the time if they might have some flea problems after.

Or maybe someone just broke the rules..............

We were in OKW second week of June. First visit for us with DVC and we checked in at 7 a.m. to get our passes for early entry to MK. We requested buildings near the HH and main pool (12, 11, 62) but were told no rooms available. We settled for a 2br in building 27 and loved it! We sat on the balcony every afternoon to watch the storms roll in or watch the birds on the golf course. It was very peaceful and right next to a bus stop. Short walk to HH and pool. We loved it so much we requested that building or 26 for this trip.

After reading these posts, I'm thinking we won't get our request because our flight doesn't arrive until almost midnight! Knowing my luck, we'll get the flea-infested room too! ;(

Oh, well. I agree with the earlier post, it's still DVC and being able to take my family of 6 to WDW two times in 6 months can't be that bad after all! I think it is luck!

Anyone have pics of the pool project at OKW? I'm dying to see some actual photos but can't find them anywhere! The kids are really hoping the pool will be open when we go in December- even if it will probably be too cold to swim!

Take care all,
Michelle

My DD uses a wheelchair full time and we actually find OKW to work out much better.
Yes, you do have to take the bus all the time or have a car, but there are lots of bus stops and you are usually close to one where ever you are.
When we stayed at BCV, you need to "roam" around quite a bit to get to/from the elevator. It's nice to be able to roll right to Epcot or MGM, but the bus service to AK and MK are much worse than at OKW.
Also, the larger size of the units at OKW make it much easier for someone who needs to use the wheelchair in the unit. When we stayed at BCV and at VWL, we had to keep moving firniture back and forth for DD to move around in the villa.

It wasn't the fact that we had the scooters, but rather because we had two. Getting one on the bus would have been fine, but getting the second one on was a total hassle, and it seemed that a lot of the bus drivers were not experienced in that task.

We have always gotten a golf course view room, because we always ask for Bldg 64, 23, or 16 top floor. The only problem we had was when I was in a wheelchair, they assigned us a 1st floor room in bldg. 25--a lot of trees and we couldn't actually SEE the golf course, but it was a nice villa, anyway. Otherwise, we have always gotten our request. 64 is the best--it overlooks the water on the 7th hole, and what a hoot it was to observe the golfers and their families. You would be surprised to see how many people end up in the water, and most of them weren't even golfing:teeth:
