Disappointed with Mythos

Ok, before you all shoot me...I'd heard and read so many great things about Mythos, so I made reservations a week before our trip. We ate there last Wednesday for lunch. I'd made 1:00 reservations, but we were starving at 12:30, so we went to see if we could get in early. No problem there, we were seated just a couple of minutes later. We probably could have just waked in without reservations, as the restaurant was only about 1/3 full. The restaurant is very cool looking inside and outside, and we had a window table behind one of the waterfalls.

I went with high expecations, especially since there is a big banner hanging across the front of the restaurant stating that it was voted the best theme park restaurant for 2003 and 2004 by Theme Park Insider magazine.

There were six of us, myself, dh, dd 14, ds 12, ds 9 and dd 6. My 14 yo loves sushi, so we ordered the Shrimp Tempura sushi. While the sauce was great (soy, ginger, wasabi), the "sushi" was gross...we were expecting a tempura shrimp chopped up and rolled in sushi rice and seaweed. What we got was a shrimp wrapped in rice and seaweed, then the whole thing was dipped in tempura batter and the whole thing was deep fried. Way too heavy and fried. She also doesn't eat meat, but will eat seafood, so she ordered the lobster bisque corn chowder soup as her main course. It was two soups swirled together in a shallow bowl, presentation was very nice, but the bisque part was so sour she couldn't eat it. She sent it back and they removed it from our bill. We also ordered the cream of mushroom soup for my husband and I to share and the waiter completely forgot about it, never brought it, and we weren't charged for it, either.

I ordered the chipotle steak sandwich and it was very good, but it was served with homemade potato chips that were very greasy and unsalted. My husband ordered the baocn cheeseburger and that was fine as well, although really nothing special. It was served with a huge portion of shoestring potatoes. My two sons each ordered the chicken club sandwiches, and one was very good, but the other was overcooked and the chicken was tough. Both also came with HUGE portions of the shoestring potatoes. Our 6 yo dd ordered the cheese ravioli with red sauce and she enjoyed it, but again, I thoubht it was just ok, and it didn't come with any sides.

The bread was good. But the service was very slow. Our waiter seemed to disappear for long periods of time, never came back to check on us, we had to flag down another server to send back our dd's soup, but by then, we were almost finished and didnt' want to wait for something else for her to order.

We thought about trying desserts, but after the slow service and the antsy kids, we just got our check and paid.

Overall, it just didn't live up to the hype I'd been expecting.

Don't feel bad about sharing your experience. I like to read about the good as well as the...not so good. Mythos is a favorite spot, but even the best have their down times--nothing is perfect...keep on sharing!

Sorry you didn't like your Mythos experience. Too bad you didn't try dessert. Their warm, gooey, chocolate banana cake is GREAT!

Sorry you didn't enjoy it. We ate there at lunch time also. Our food wasn't the absolute best ever, but good. Our Waiter, on the other hand, was one of the best we have ever had anywhere, even impressing my DH (hard to do, believe me). Very attentive, quick, and helpful. He even took a picture of us at the table when he saw me attempting to take one of my DH and DS.

At least you can chock it up to, "been there, done that." All kinds of experiences, right?

I hope my glowing review didn't send you in the wrong direction. I thought the shrimp tempura roll was awesome. I thought it was unique, though mine was not greasy in the least. Our service was also top-notch.
As Sherilatte said don't worry about sharing bad experiences, no restaurant can be at the top of its game all the time. Would you ever give it another try?

I don't know when we'll get back to Florida, we live in Southern California. But with our kids, they want to ride the rides and not have to sit through a long meal when we're at an amusement park. They were fine and well behaved and all, but they were also very anxious to get back to the rides and the slow service didn't help. If we do go back to IOA, I think there are other restaurants we'd like to try in the area, for dinner and not take time out of our day for a big sit down meal.

I don't mean to imply that it was really awful or anything, just that I didn't think it lived up to the expectations I'd set based on all the glowing reviews I'd read. Maybe we hit it on a bad day or something.

We just got back a few days ago, and I was feeling guilty for disliking mythos .
It was our only sit down/waiter meal at Universal so I was hoping for good food. We all ordered the chicken club and the rolls were burnt and hard, the chix was hard, the skinny fries were cold and hard.
They brought us new fries which were slightly better, although their ketchup had a little spicy aftertaste.
My mom couldnt eat her sandwich so they took it off the bill.
My children ordered 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream which came almost completely melted, and very small scoops.
