Disappointed in food this trip...

We went to WDW 26 May til 3 June. Stayed at AKL. We were disappointed in the quality of food this time. Our last trip was Sept 01.

Dinner at Sci-Fi: I had salmon. DD had steak. Salmon was completely raw. Sent it back to be cooked. DD's steak was good.

Breakfast at 1900 Park Fare: Loved their thick-cut bacon! Unfortunately, scrambled eggs were unhealthily undercooked. Very gross.

Lunch at Rose and Crown: I had Guiness Stew. DD had Cottage Pie. Very good.

Dinner at LTT: We ate fairly early (before 5pm) but the pork loin looked like it had been cooked a few days prior. Discolored and dried out looking. Did not touch it.

Boma for breakfast and later for dinner: After all the rave reviews, I just was not impressed. Had a good variety of "different" choices, I just thought the food tasted bland. Perhaps the spices were too subtle for us since we live in New Mexico and are very used to mexican food.

Jiko: Better than Boma!!! My daughter got ticked because she asked for a steak knife and our waiter took her plate and cut her steak for her, saying that they didn't really have steak knives. She is 14 and did not appreciate being treated like a toddler. Waiter thought he was funny. I thought it was tacky. I had salmon. Food was good.

Cape May Buffet: They did not have crab legs to order that evening. Our waitress basically ignored us. Other waitstaff cleared our plates and brought drink refills. She kept walking past us. I ignored her when it came time to pay the bill - no tip.

Overall quality has diminished recently. Not just food. Cleanliness of parks. Level of service. Attitude of CM's.

Nothing dramatic. Just rather disappointed in quality this trip.

I'm confused maybe it's just me but why didn't you ask why he was taking her plate away when she asked for a steak knife? It just seems weird that she asked for one and then he took her plate away..maybe I'm misunderstanding the story?

Sorry, I wasn't clear. We were sitting at the bar/counter. Waiter removed her plate from in front of her, placed it in front of him, grabbed her knife, and proceeded to cut her steak as if she had no clue.

She has been taught to not "struggle" with her food, use the proper utensils for the job, etc. And basically has superb manners (in public anyway!) so she did the right thing by asking for a steak knife in order to cut her steak.

We just felt that he was out of line by what he did.

WOW Linda, that is the strangest thing(restaurant related) I've ever heard! That's just down right rude, were you shocked or what?

Gosh, I don't even think that's apporpriate for even a young child let alone a 14 year old! Sometimes you have to wonder what in the world are some people thinking???

Sorry you had a bad experience.

I have a major under cooked food phobia so I don't blame you for being upset about that!

I wasn't too fond of dinner at Boma either, we tried it on our trip this past March. After all the rave reviews it just didn't live up to my expectations, I guess. Even the Zebra domes, from the way people spoke of them I thought they'd be big(I don't know why-lol) but they were tiny, very good, but smaller then I'd imagined. We'd had breakfast there on a previous trip and i thought it was much better then the dinner.

In all honesty, I thought it was kinda funny in a strange way. My daughter was mortified.

I try really hard not to get bent out of shape. My disapproval was shown in my tip and the fact that we will not return there.

I really don't know why he would do this. My daughter is very sophisticated and quite used to eating at any level of establishment.

We quietly discussed all his physical imperfections in order to restore my daughter's good humor! I deal with my teenager with a sense of humor (and most everything else in life) and know when to get disgustingly raunchy like a teenager would! Works every time!

Wow, now that was rude.

Maybe the guy was just trying to help your daughter. When I read your first post, I thought the guy took the steak into the kitchen and cut it up. However he cut it right in front of you and your daughter. Why didn't one of you ask him to stop and explain to him that you wanted a steak knife so that she could cut the steak herself?

OMG it sounds as if you weren't having that much luck with your food this trip.

Sorry to hear of the bad service at Cape May - I have never really experienced bad service at WDW, it was close one for us at Brown Derby recently but the waitress rectified stuff so we still tipped her. If I were ever to have bad service in WDW again though I would go and speak to the Manager or Head Server as soon as possible. I've yet to have to do this.

Thanks for letting us read your reviews at least you enjoyed Rose and Crown - gotta love that Brit food but then I'm biased ;)

In reference to the steak cutting incident, I think the server was way out of line. That wasn't professional conduct. If your daughter was 4 it MIGHT be cute (still not sure on that) but to do that to a 14 year old is not. My almost 13 yr. old dd would NOT be happy if treated that way. IMO a server shouldn't TOUCH your plate after you have been served unless you make a special request that requires him/her to do so. I don't think asking for a steak knife qualifies. Sorry to hear you had some not so great dining experiences. Overall we have always been happy with the food at WDW. It can be hit or miss though. There are places we've tried more than once and had totally different experiences each time we've gone, those that get great reviews that we found to be disappointing, and those we didn't expect much from and enjoyed. And so much depends on service. A server can "make or break" a dining experience for you.

I'm mortified by this quote.

In fact...it sickens me more than the undercooked eggs or a hand touching my plate.

I agree with you Mlissa88. As a teacher, it is so depressing to see kids treat each other like this. Don't mean to be "holier than thou" but what is this teaching the girl?

Goodness! It is so easy to misstate things or give the wrong impression on internet boards! Sorry!

When I said that we discussed his physical imperfections, I meant the hair that stuck straight up on the back of his head, and his shirt that was untucked in back. THOSE types of "imperfections!"

I have disabilities and would never make fun of anyone else with them.

My daughter DID tell him that she just wanted a steak knife.

My priority was to sooth HER. She was ready to walk out without eating her dinner because she was mortified. My job was to change her mood, put a smile on her face, and us eat our dinner.

My daughter knows (as does everyone else that knows me) that I use humor to deal with most everything. Sometimes I act like a teenager to get a "point" across. She knew exactly what I was doing and appreciated the fact that I made everything ok without having a "mommy showdown".

LindaR - Don't worry, not everyone on these boards take things the wrong way. For whatever reason, some people tend to blow things waaaay out of proportion and seem to take great pleasure in "flaming" others. I knew what you meant and admire your sense of humor. I have 2 dd's who will someday be teenagers and I'm sure I'll have to think of creative ways to divert a possible meltdown. Oops, I do that already!!

Anyway, I appreciated your reviews and hope that some of the comments made don't deter you from posting. Oh, and it's too bad that your food and service experiences weren't up to par, that can be such a disappointment. Half of the fun for me is eating so I hope I have better luck.

Sounds like you are a great mom!:D I sure hope you and your daughter had a great trip.

Warnings have been put out hundreds of times on these boards to NOT order anything at Sci Fi other that the simplest of foods like burgers and shakes. I am very sorry you missed out on those warnings. Salmon at Sci Fi?? I can only imagine how bad that was!!!!

Can't go wrong with the cottage pies at Rose and Crown. I'm glad that meal was good for you!

You are so right that things can get interpreted the wrong way. I did think you were making fun of this guy's abnormalities! Your response helped clarify the situation.

Sorry to have been so harsh! Unfortunatlely that comment just hit the wrong way and I reacted, just like DisneyFan09 reacted to us! Now let's get back to your OP and the nasty food!

Here's hoping that you have better food/service on your next trip!

I didn't see any comments about the food that Cape May did have. Was it OK? We loved Cape May but had good service which helped.

Cape May was a disappointment for my daughter. She was planning on ordering crab legs. They did not like the shipment they received that day and were not offering crab legs that night. That was the only reason my dd wanted to eat there! I ended up peeling about 2 dozen shrimp for her (she thought the peeling process was gross!). To me, it was just buffet. Usually can't go wrong with a buffet!

I thought the service was lacking from our particular waitress. Other waitstaff kept coming to our table to remove plates/refill glasses. Perhaps that is just how they operate.

Linda, I think most of us knew what you meant. Sounds like you're pretty good at consoling a mortified teenager.

What a bizarre thing for him to do. I wouldn't even know how to complain.

Sorry you didn't like Boma, we really enjoyed it!

"Unfortunatlely that comment just hit the wrong way and I reacted, just like DisneyFan09 reacted to us!"

I shouldn't have even gotten into this - but I felt people were being a little bit harsh and it is true that on this board people jump people for no reason.

Well I guess it's better that they didn't serve the crab legs that they weren't happy with- rather than making someone sick, right? But I understand the disapointment. I just read about the changes at Cape may & am NOT happy. & we enjoyed Sci-fi but I just ordered a turkey sandwich, can't really go wrong with that. I wouldn't order anything else there, not becuase of what people say- but because I wouldn't like to come across something I couldn't identify in the dim lighting!! Sorry about your expiriences & hope you have a better one next time! & By the way, from the way you talk about your daughter & her manners I'm sure she is mature enough to be able to have a few laughs with her mother to break the ice in an embarassing situation & not loose all of her morals at the same time!:D
