We were passing by Orlando and stopped at DTD for lunch. I was super excited about BabyCakes, my DD has a peanut allergy. We go to WDW several times a year and I thought we finally have a place we can get cupcakes at while on vacation! I read online their allergy info on their website. Looked OK, said they can't say they're nut free cause the FDA now classifies coconut as a nut, but my DD eats coconut with no issues. And their site says something about their flour is made on shared equipment with hazelnut, almond and soy, but is power washed and first 30 pounds discarded. So I felt good about buying from here. But, when I went to talk to girl there she basically told me it wasn't safe for my daughter and goodbye. It was that blunt. I was shocked. I've been listening to podcasts raving about this place and I walked away with my mouth open. My DD was extremely sad. I literally would buy dozens each trip! Has anyone else had this same experience?!? :confused3

(On a side note, I found it also interesting that BabyCakes is inside Pollo Campero and they looked at me like I had a third eye when I asked if they cooked in peanut oil. You would think they'd be a little educated about food allergies since an allergy free bakery is inside their building!)

No, we have never had that expereince at Babycakes and we have been there many, many times. I was not able to follow your last paragraph. But I can tell you every person we have spoken to at BC was been well informed about their products and have answered all of my questions.

Maybe I came in at a bad time? There was no line, but maybe the girl was having an off moment? :confused3
Has anyone with a peanut allergy eaten here?
I'm willing to give it a second chance, cause like I said we'd buy often and alot if it was safe!
Thanks!

I would stop in again. Like I said we have had nothing but great things to say about them. And for awhile, we were stopping in weekly.

If you do have a problem there, the manager is almost always there and I know she would be able to answer your questions.

I have allergies to peanuts and soy (the soy is actually worse than the peanut). I will say I'm usually okay eating things with that "made on shared equipment with peanuts warning but over the past year I've become super sensitive to trace soy.

So, all that being said, I think I stopped by Babycakes every day during our week long trip last March. I must have tried almost every product they have! No allergy problems whatsoever. Also, we had good customer service the whole time, so I'm sorry to hear your experience was less than magical.

Ya, I was bummed. I was planning on stocking up. We were on our way to the beach.

I've been to the one in LA and the one in DTD.

I talked to them at the one in LA. They say the concern is treenuts....not peanuts. I have a cross contamination peanut allergy so I can't made anything made on the same line, same factory, etc. and i've eaten the products.

IME: I would not stock up too much at once. I did that and because the ones sold in DTD are all gluten free, they don't seem to stay as fresh.

The one's I bought at the babycakes in LA were not gluten free so they seemed to stay fresh longer. That was something that I did not even think about when buying them in DTD because I don't eat gluten free on a regular basis.

It is possible they had a recent change in supplier and some of the ingredients may not be safe for those with peanut allergies. Email Babycakes and let them know of your experience. They seem to be a company that cares about it's customers and providing proper information. The store clerk could have handled the situation better.

Hi There!

I'm truly sorry to hear about your experience at the bakery. I apologize for the person at the counter who you spoke with, as our main goal here is to make sure that, even if there is not a safe option, no one ever feels dismissed. I would love to speak with you further about your visit to BabyCakes. Please do not hesitate to send me an e-mail, or give me a call at 407.938.9044. Just ask for Emily.

As far as our peanut policy goes, we do not bake with peanuts and to our knowledge, none of our vendors use peanuts in their facilities, however we do not claim to be peanut-free.

I look forward to hearing from you, and once again, I do apologize for your experience here.

-Emily

Thanks Emily for emailing me back. We'll see you in a couple weeks for some cupcakes! :thumbsup2
