disabled person denied boarding

This is going to be one of those threads, I give it three and a half pages. The money quote for me was, 'We're sitting on the plane together and something happens, are you going to help me? Of course you are'. We'll, maybe. First, I shouldn't have the obligation since I didn't sign up for that when I bought the ticket. I'll refrain from trampling others to escape, and I'll see family off first in any case, but if the flames are licking my ankles, this guy better hope I'm not the theoretical seat-mate he's referring to.

Just to let you know quickly, it was US Air that put him off the plane.

I trust they refunded the ticket.

Under certain (and lots of) circumstances in Canada, airlines must fly a companion for a disabled person free.

That's exactly what got me, too, when I read the article a few days ago.

He's stating right there that he does need assistance. But right now he's relying on the kindness of strangers for that assistance.

If I'm sitting next to him on a solo trip, or if he's sitting next to hubby on a travel trip, he's in luck! If he is sitting next to me when I'm flying with my son, he's out of luck, because I'll be helping my son. If it's a family trip, he's very likely back in luck, because one of us can help him and one of us can help our son.

He's admitted that he needs help. He just doesn't want to hire anyone just yet, so he's going to rely on strangers.

I honestly think that the airline was very likely correct, that he cannot fly alone now, given this admission of his.

This is one of those threads....everyone will have their own opinion.

I don't disagree with the airline and I dont feel that the airline should have to fly the companion for free either but it would be nice if they discounted that second ticket. I think its a big safety issue; and if I were with my family they would be my first priority in an emergency situation not a stranger.

People always make a big thing out of everything and take legal action for every reason...If something were to happen to this guy then we would be hearing the same thing "legal action" because the airline was reckless in letting him fly alone.

Exactly. If everybody else escapes a cabin fire and this guy is the only briquette still in his seat when the fire brigade finishes, his family stands to retire rich.

I was thinking pretty much this same thing, but I was afraid to post it. I thought maybe I was mean and crazy! :lmao: Good to know that I am just sensible.:thumbsup2

I simply MUST have a drink with you some day. I can always do with a bit of inappropriate humor mixed with a few beers. LOL

I think it's quite ok that the airline requires someone to travel with him and since it would be a requirement, I'd also say the companion should fly free.

I know he wants to go it alone but what about people who might be injured because he can't evacuate his seat? A travel companion would better assure the safety of all the passengers. Sorry but the man needs to see the whole picture and not just that he believes HE is being picked on.

Love to, I'll be at the spot pictured below daily from March 3rd through the 10th, 2011 if you're in the vicinity.
