.."disabled by administrator.."

..as a new subscriber I am having a lot of fun on the DIS boards, but almost every time I log on and try to view new posts I get the " sorry the search function has been disabled by the administrator" message... this is very frustrating. Can anyone advise why this happens (apparently) so often, or am I just unlucky?

Hi Mike I'll try to help, but I'm not the most technically-minded of Moderators, so maybe someone will correct me later if I'm wrong!

The search function is out of action a lot, and it's all down to the volume of traffic on the boards at any one time. When there are hundreds of posters all trying to use the search function at the same time it causes everything to slow down, so the function is suspended to try to speed things up a bit.

I'm not sure how this stops you from checking new posts, however. You can click on any board to see the list of topics on that board, then click on the thread to view all posts on that thread. Threads with new posts added since you last logged on will show a yellow arrow to the left. You don't need the search function to do this.

Hope this helps, but please let us know if it doesn't and maybe we can fathom out the problem.

Its very annoying that the search engine is never available to use! Especially when people reply saying "search for your answer" !!

I find it's better in the morning when just the Brits are likely to online, but virtually impossible to use once the Americans are online!

As Hilary and Foxyfee says, the Search works when the traffic is not so heavy - you should be able to use it in the mornings, I can and do. As Hilary says, to read new posts you can simply click on the threads - threads with new posts added since you last logged on will show a yellow arrow to the left.
The last post on the thread also carries the time and date it was posted.
