My DS 17 is autistic and does not have a drivers license. I have always brought copies of my childrens birth certificates when flying but now that ds is 17 do I need more than that. I've heard you can get a non-drivers ID not sure if it's DMV that has them and does he need this? Thanks, Linda :)

No one is required to have photo ID to get on an airplane, but having it can make the process MUCH smoother. The likelyhood of being "randomly" selected for additional screening goes up significantly if you can't show photo ID.

I would highly suggest getting the non-driver ID. In New Jersey the fee is just $24, and if his autism is a qualifying disability the fee is only $6. See http://www.nj.gov/mvc/Licenses/NonDriverID.htm for more information.

Once your son is 18, he will need a photo ID. Here is a list of what is acceptable taken from the TSA website:
* U.S. passport
* U.S. passport card
* DHS "Trusted Traveler" cards (NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
* U.S. Military ID
* Permanent Resident Card
* Border Crossing Card
* DHS-designated enhanced driver's license
* Drivers Licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent) that meets REAL ID benchmarks (All states are currently in compliance)
* A Native American Tribal Photo ID
* An airline or airport-issued ID (if issued under a TSA-approved security plan)
* A Registered Traveler Card (that contains the following: Name; Date of Birth; Gender; Expiration date; and a Tamper-resistant feature)

There are also guidelines about telling the person doing the screening that
your child is disabled, etc. Hope this helps.

We went to the DMV and got an id card for my dd , no less than 6 months later she was called for jury duty....heehee, we loved it.

Definitely get it as eventually you may need it. Just in case you get a surly employee who does not understand the rules.

He is fine until he is age 18.
