Disability with Dad at Disneyland...

Wow, say that three times really fast!

Anyways, my dad has rheumatoid arthritis and has a lot of joint pain-mainly in his ankles. He will NOT use a scooter so he'll walk. We're staying at DLH so he can go back frequently for rests if need be.

I want to know if he can get some sort of disability pass so he doesn't have to wait in long lines? Is there even such a thing if you don't have a wheelchair or scooter?

Yes, there is, but they will probably not give one because they'll say that he should rent a wheelchair or ECV. They're pretty stingy on handing those out and only give them if really needed. They might give a pass with a wheelchair stamp on it that would allow him (and up to 5 others) to wait in the wheelchair line if available. But probably not the one that allows a complete bypass of the lines.

Can you try to revisit the idea of a scooter with him or is he completely against it? There's a lot of walking involved and he would be so much more comfortable with a scooter.

My dad is 81 and has a lot of pain in his legs from various conditions. He tends to be very proud (retired cop) and has refused to use a scooter in the past. However, this year he gave in and we're getting him a scooter on our trip next month. We're having it delivered from a local medical supply company so he can ride it across the street from our hotel and also not worry about them all being taken by the time we get to Disneyland. My dad realized that if he wants to go to DL with his grandsons, he'll have to use a scooter.

I can totally understand that some people don't want to use them, but I think people get to a point where they're necessary. Hope your trip goes well!

Thanks..bummer though! There is no way right now that he'll even use a scooter. He can walk but he has to walk slowly.

From reading hydroguy's posts, I got the impression that the Disney hotels are going to be FURTHER away than the across-the-street-from-entrance-gates hotels (like Carousel and Tropicana, if memory serves). You might want to check that out...I know that my new choice of Paradise Pier is going to make our walk much longer, than when I had us booked at Carousel...

If he won't do a scooter, would he allow you to push him in a wheelchair?

My mom isn't coordinated enough to get a scooter, but I'm considering getting her a wheelchair when we go in November. She had hip surgery this year, and while she can walk okay during normal day activities, I figure we'll be walking so much that the rest would do her good.
