Dis Vets/Dis Dog Parents

I'm so sorry for your mom's dog. Unfortunately splenic cancer is common in dogs. We typically see it in Goldens, Labs and GSD, but it can happen in any breed. If a mass is found and not yet ruptured, about 50% are non cancerous. If a mass has already ruptured, about 75% are cancerous. Of those most are hemangiosarcoma, which is a very aggressive cancer. Typical life span if only a single mass is found tends to be about 3 months. With chemo up to 6 m is more common. If metastasis is noted at the time of surgery, prognosis is worse.
At least they found it before it ruptured. Those dogs are very critical by the time they get to us, and are much less stable for surgery.
I wish your mom's dog luck. It's sad when a loved family member is sick.

I'm sorry your mom didn't get good news about her sweet dog. Cancer sucks.

I hope the specialty vets can give some treatment options, or help give him the best quality of life possible. Again, I am sorry. I know this is devastating.
