DIS Unplugged WISHers

It looks like I'm going specifically for the race. The only way this would change is if Kim decides she wants to go over Anna's Fall Break at the end of October. Then I'd probably not go the first week of October for the race. Right now I'm about 90% sure I'm doing the 5K and/or the half relay.

Are you considering coming down for the race. There's nothing better than running, eating, and drinking.

No. We're not going to WDW until PCC 2.0 :sad2:

Since I do the Alzheimer Association's 5K every year now, I will definitely do the one on Castaway Cay. I walk, though. I don't run. If there are other walkers who want to do this at a slower speed than a jog, I'm your gal. :thumbsup2

I can't be at WDW for the October Wine and Dine due to work conflicts, but I have scheduled my F&W trip October 9-17. I'm always good for a few laps around World Showcase while I'm noshing.

All of you doing the Food & Wine are welcome to join us on the Inaugural Food & Wine thread on the WISH boards. It is a bit slow because so many people are concentrating on the Princess or some other spring races at the moment but any questions you have will be answered.

Guess I'll tell my story too. I don't post on the WISH boards but I should go check them out.

I started Weight Watchers back in late summer/ early fall and have had a few set backs but so far have lost 30 pounds. Being stuck in the house for two weekends in a row did not help.

I did try the C25K but did not make it past week one, so I need to get back on that track this week or at least some form of moving around.

I'll offer the somewhat short version of my story. Those of you who've seen my on the WISH board or follow with me on facebook at all may well have heard some of this.

My path to getting healthier started a little over a year and a half ago now. A good friend and (now former) coworker of mine had been into 5k races and the like for some time, and was getting pretty stoked about the idea of training for a half marathon that fall. She always seemed so pumped about it, and it piqued my interest a bit. Hearing about the WDW marathon and the like helped even more.

Soooo... one day I was talking to her and said I was gonna try the whole running thing, because eventually I wanted to run a marathon. A few days later, after getting some basic clothing and the like, I headed out for some running and walking. I was winded after a minute or so, but on my way to my first 5K. Nine months, and 26.2 miles later, I felt like I could do anything.

I'm about 20 pounds down from the weight I started. For a short while I was making a more concentrated effort on the weight-loss side of it, but I found that to come at serious detriment to my overall training (e.g. feeling light-headed a lot, not having good energy when out running, etc). Now, my weight loss isn't specifically consistent or quick, but is slow and steady nonetheless. More importantly, though, my overall fitness, endurance, and generally well-being are pretty good.

Fast forward to last November, when my wife and I split up, and I found myself with an interesting combination of a lot more time on my hands, but a lot less motivation (at least for a while). My motivation has since come back, and the extra time I have is being put to pretty good use. At least three nights a week are spent doing running or similar high-intensity cardio (1 hour total workout time is considered short now), with a few shorter and/or strength workouts kind of sprinkled in at other times.

I haven't picked a spring marathon yet (that said, anyone with a good suggestion please let me know), but apart from that, next major event will be the Muddy Buddy in May. After that, I have something else on deck, a new level of craziness, but I don't want to say much more than that just yet.

Never too late to get into shape. Motivation can be an interesting thing. It's often said of running that it's a solo sport, and except for the super-elite, you don't really have to worry about competitors. One thing I've learned though, and it's actually the source of my own motivation, is that even in a solo sport, there is a definite competitor. One that is very real. My competitor starts running, much like I do, just as the gun goes off. Unlike me though, my competitor runs perfectly even splits, never once stops, and is always waiting for me at the finish line. My competitor is everyone's competitor, and ticks off one second at a time. A solo sport, yes, but it's always runner vs. the clock. There is no better motivation.

The terrible weather is keeping me housebound and really curtailing my workout routine. Is this happening to anyone else? C'mon Spring!!!!

I told my story last year some time but don't mind sharing again. I was taking Cholesterol medication and one day, went to my doctor who gave me a prescription for a second BP med because I'd maxed out the strength of the one I was on.

That day, I began to change. It took a year but I managed to drop enough weight to leave all medication behind. I never filled the second BP prescription and have it hanging on my wall in my office.

My form of exercise was cycling. I bought a bike and began riding 2-3 miles per day. The culmination of my weight loss and what I'll feel was my personal finish line was my GKTW bike ride when I rode 116 miles in one day. I have several friends that can do double or triple that but none were over 300 pounds the year prior to that or hadn't been on a bike on years. That fundraiser did more for me that I did for the kids.

Oh, and no jokes about the kilt! :rotfl2:

Not me...I'm getting to the gym even if I have to get there by dog sled.

There's no foul weather in my basement! If I had to go to the gym or outdoors to exercise, it would never happen!

Its slowing down my running for sure, but the between basketball and football I get some cardio. I still am in the gym 3-4 times a week since its only 2 miles from home.

This spring and summer I'm doing a few 5K and 10K races with some guys from work. I'm a little on the big side at the moment so I need to shed maybe ten pounds to make things a bit easier on my old knees. I've got to get some new running shoes. My old ones are ready for the trash!

I did the ESPN 5K on Saturday!!!!

Now, what I do can in no way be considered running-but I wasn't last and I finished smiling! I ran across the finish line and got a high five from Mickey!

For someone who has been a couch potato for about 5 years, this was a major achievement. I even got a medal!!!

It hasn't kept me out of the gym but it has cut into my weekly miles. I have a half marathon in Washington DC on the 20th so I'm hoping it gives me a break

If anyone is interested in an inspiring story that shows you can do it no matter how far you have to go check out this article from Bicycling Magazine.

4 miles on the treadmill this morning. Hard shoulder workout at lunch. :thumbsup2

Great job! I was thrilled after my first 5K and it really gave me a shot in the arm. Now I have to get back at it :)

I wish I could (have the will) to run in the morning. I just hate the mornings and get up about 5 mins before I have to walk out the door.

I'm pretty much the same way.....Alarm..Snooze...Alarm..Snooze, etc, etc.

So impatient tonight. I leave for the Princess tomorrow after work, so just getting through the day will be torture. Maybe my boss tells me to hit the road early!
