DIS Unplugged WISHers

The thing that is so cool to me is how many WISH'ers use a Disney race or a Disney trip as their goal or reward for getting healthier.

DISNEY SAVES LIVES!!!!

At 34 I was about 20 pounds overweight. Sorry, not brave enough to post pics. Three kids, 9, 7 and 2, full time job and husband. I was a runner in high school and ran on occasion in college and between pregnancies. I was in decent shape before the last child but was struggling to loose it after she was born thus the 20 extra pounds.

I started walking around my neighborhood (1 1/2 miles). I walked for a few weeks in the evening and felt really good. But everytime I would see someone running I would be jealous, I wanted to be that person running...not walking. So my ego got the best of me and I started running portions of my route. I was embarrassed that I couldn't run all of it. But slowly I started making progress, little by little. I run while our daughter is in dance class, even if I only get in 25 minutes.

Last May, at 35 my husband and I ran our first 5k and loved it. He had also been working out and running with friends after work. It has been great that we both workout and encourage each other. It is hard to sit on the couch when you know the other one is out there running, you know you should be doing it too.

We spent last summer running several 5k races. At the end of last summer I completed a Triathlon Sprint. That was something I was really proud of and something I couldn't believe I could actually do. Being healthy and eating well is the example I want to set for my kids and it makes me feel good about myself. I don't do it everyday but I've stay on track pretty well. I have lost 15 of my extra 20 pounds, hoping this spring to lose the last 5 lbs.

A good friend of ours told posted on fb that she "Never regrets a workout" and that is very true.

Let me start by saying, those of you still working at it, keep it up. I think I'm still a work in progress, ideally I would be down another 15 lbs to hit my goal weight. I have ups and downs, good weeks and bad weeks, but keep starting over and keep trying. BUT! Enjoy life, if you do it, GREAT! If not, that is fine. Life goes on and don't let a few pounds make you feel any better or worse about yourself. Weight is something we notice about people, but after getting to know all the great people here, it isn't a big deal. Personalities count! I'd much rather hang out with a group of fun fluffy people than skinny angry models any day!

That said, my journey started at work. I'd been fairly active most of my life, playing basketball, football and doing most outdoor activities. One thing I NEVER did is run. I hate running, I HATE running!! Did I mention I hate running? We started a biggest loser contest at work and I joined. A little bit of my competitive streak kicked in and I wanted to win. Did I win? No! I came in second. We had another contest, Did I win? No, I came in second. My weight at its worst was close to 250. I lost about 20 lbs the first contest and about 10 or so more the second time. I did it by eating better and working out with a friend. We didn't do any running at that point, but we did a lot of cardo, free weights and other misc work outs. Everything from stairs, sprints, sled pushing. I was his guinea pig for testing work outs he was going to use for football conditioning. Love every minute of it. During the process I got stronger and put on muscle. Any one losing weight, let me tell you how much that helps. Your muscle burns calories for you, getting solid and working out will pay dividends in the long haul. In come the PodCast Cruise! Muddy Buddy talk, ugh. Guess what, I need to run now! So I added that into my workout and started running. What do you know, I can run. I'm slow...but I can run. I started with 1/2 mile, worked up to a mile, and soon was running 5K. When the muddy buddy came around I had training the full distance and my goal was to do it without walking. I was able to do that (Even though Paul had to wait for me). As I was running I realized how easy and effective this was as a workout. No need to go to the gym (Although I still workout more than I run) and I can toss on the iPod and run away the troubles of the day. I'm down to 200 lbs right now, still hoping to shed a little more. But now I know how to do it and what it takes and I don't think I'll ever be 250 again. I've run as far as 10 miles, I plan to run a Tri-spring in the spring and a full tri by the fall. My goal is to run a half marathon in the summer. This is from a guy that is NOT a runner! Never have been and never will be.

Awesome! Both of you should be so proud. Thanks for keeping me motivated over the past 18 monts. Even though we don't see each other a lot I really do cherish our friendship. Okay...Enough of the "mush"....Carry on. :)

Thank you for cropping me out of the picture. :thumbsup2

What you said about enjoying life is true. I found I am in a better mood when I workout but I had a good life even with an extra 15 lbs.

And with the weight loss I have found different "problems areas"....no one is perfect.....okay, except maybe Paul. :worship:

Thank YOU Aaron for starting this thread and for our freindship.

What I like best about Tamra is she always tells the truth! What a great judge of character! :goodvibes

I was slim until the birth of child #3 when I was in my mid-thirties, but I was never in great physical condition. I lost the baby weight pretty quickly, but a combination of middle age, less activity, and not paying attention contributed to a gradual weight gain. My highest weight was about 195 in 2000, and I have the fat passport photo to prove it! (Thank goodness I am getting a new passport this year!) It wasn't until my oldest daughter was in college in 2003 that my husband and I went on a low-carb diet, and I got more serious about exercising. I lost 25 pounds and kept the weight off for about 2.5 years. Then it crept back due to laziness and falling back into bad eating habits. :(

I lurk on and off on the WISH board, and I am also a big fan of The Biggest Loser show. When the WISH board had a spring Biggest Loser challenge from Jan. 1-April 16 (the day before I go to WDW for my birthday trip...and I'm not telling which birthday!) - I signed up. I also signed up for the February exercise challenge. While my weight loss since Jan. 1 hasn't been great, I've lost about 20 pounds since last fall. I've been doing a pretty good job of exercising since Jan. 1st, and I intend to meet my exercise goal for February. Having to report my weight each week to one person on the WISH board and posting my exercise progress has really helped me to stay on track.

I am NOT a runner, and I don't intend to start - at my age! ;) However, my goal is to walk a half marathon. If the Princess Half Marathon is the first weekend in March 2011 (same as this year) - I would like to register for it. It would be quite an accomplishment for me - especially as it would be about 7 weeks before a milestone birthday.

Another Biggest Loser 9 participant checking in!!

I never had a weight problem until I had two kids and 4 miscarriages in 3 years. I ate for two and two more and two more.

I got a Wii Fit for Christmas and started using it every day and I joined WW mid-January. I've lost almost 25 pounds in 2 months.

I have Lupus and in the past I have used that as an excuse to not exercise. Not anymore, baby! I love working out now. It's the highlight of my day!

I started doing the C25k program last month. I love to run and I am excited to do my first 5k in July and I hope to run in the Princess half marathon next year. :)

And I am really looking forward to using the fitness center on the ship in December and jogging around deck 4!!! Whoo Hoo!

Castaway Cay 5K!!

Ok, since so many of us have made great strides and others are well on their way, we should totally do the Castaway Cay 5K during Podcast Cruise 2.0!

For those who have never done a 5k before, make this your goal! I mean, how cool would it be to have that as your first 5k?!?!

PLUS, the best part is that you get to get off the ship first thing, before anyone else, and run the island while it is EMPTY. Just beautiful and pristine! :cloud9:

For those who are nervous or don't have someone to run with, I am going to set up running/walking groups so that you will have someone to go with, or even a large group. When the cruise gets a little closer, we can be more formal about things.

But for right now, my husband Jeff can coach (be support) for those running at the 7-8 minute per mile pace, I will draft our own David Parfitt to coach/support the 8-10 minute per milers. (And Dave, if you are reading this, I know I haven't asked you yet, but I also know that I don't have to! :goodvibes ) And I will be there for anyone who is at the 10+ minute per mile pace. That way, we will have Podcasters/Wishers at different places on the course as well as men, women, etc. so that everyone has someone they can feel comfortable with during the 5k! How great is this going to be! Woot! :cool1:

Again, we will start a specific thread for this about 3-4 months before the cruise.

And Frank, feel free to jump in as support staff, too, since I know you will be running that morning. ;)

Thank you for the invite but I won't be on PCC 2.0. I'm going down for marathon weekend in January and the cruise is just too close.

I did do the 5K on PCC 1.0 along with fellow DISers Dave and Don. There might have been a few others from the group but I can't remember. It is more of a group training run then a race so there is no need to worry about your time or pace. Just go out and run at your own pace. It kind of slots into the gap between training and an "organized" 5K for lack of a better word. For anyone who is close enough to also come for marathon weekend in January (or has a better travel budget then me) it would be a good warmup for the marathon weekend 5K...just sayin' :rolleyes1

If anyone has any questions about the run or any 5K in general I'd be more then happy to help out.

I'm in as welll for the Castaway Cay 5K. I'm also planning at least running the Wine & Dine 5K this October. That will be good prep for the Castaway 5K.

I'm in too.

I've recently begun to post on the WISH boards. I am by far not athletic. In fact I am far from being healthy. Thanks to the first podcast cruise, I started posting more and got interested in some things going on around the time of the cruise. I signed up for something I had never experienced before, a Muddy Buddy. I was on the third Muddy Buddy team with Chris (crazydisneyman). With the support and encouragement of the Muddy Buddies and cheer squad, getting to a better fitness level was much easier. Even though we crossed the finish line towards the end of the pack (mostly because I'm not too speedy), we finished. With a great sense of camaraderie, we finished. The DIS Unplugged gave me a glimpse at what I could be.

Since podcast cruise 1.0, I have neglected any sort of exercise. It shows. I'm a little rounder. I get tired faster. My mind moves slower. I don't like it. I want to change, to be a better, healthier, happier me.

A few things have kick started me on my way. First, hearing about and registering for the Inaugural Food & Wine Half Marathon this October and knowing that I would be there with at least two of my close friends. (Since then, I have learned of a slew of DISers that will be attending.) I am cheap/thrifty/tightwadish. After paying a non-refundable entry fee, I have some incentive to be ready to run/walk it.

Secondly, I witnessed Marathon Weekend. Awe inspiring would be an understatement. The air was charged with so much energy--life--excitement; all the while being barely above freezing and an unG~dly early hour in the morning. I was a spectator and I dashed around (using Disney transport) from the starting line to the TTC, MK, DAK, DHS, and back to Epcot and the finish line. Along the way, I saw thousands of people. All shapes. All sizes. All ages. All speeds. I knew right then, that I had no excuse. I spent a great deal of that weekend and the following week talking to Dave Parfitt (Mouse Skywalker) and picking his brain. He not only encouraged and supported my goal of participating in 2011 Marathon weekend, he shared his experiences and exposed me to some resources to help get me to my goal.

Even though I don't have any physical milestones, I am on my way.

Thanks for sharing, Todd. You have just inspired me to consider the October half marathon instead of waiting until the Princess one in March 2011! Like you, once I part with that registration fee (is it $120?) - by golly I am going!

**Found the answer: the registration fee for the Wine & Dine half marathon on Oct. 2, 2010 is $135. It will be HOT then. Good thing the race is at night. http://espnwwos.disney.go.com/events/wine-and-dine-half-marathon/

Will you be with the family in October, or are you you going specifically for the race?
It looks like I'm going specifically for the race. The only way this would change is if Kim decides she wants to go over Anna's Fall Break at the end of October. Then I'd probably not go the first week of October for the race. Right now I'm about 90% sure I'm doing the 5K and/or the half relay.

Are you considering coming down for the race. There's nothing better than running, eating, and drinking.
