After just answering a post about how often we cut our hair I realised that I am actually afraid to get it cut. I am so scared that the person will mess up my hair I usually just trim and put it back in a pony tail or headband. I have had 2 very nasty perms and 1 cut that was cut too short. What should I look for in a hair dresser? how do you decide if a cut is right for you. I am more than willing to pay alittle more if that is what it takes. Those places in the Mall just don't seem professional enough to have them near my head for more than just a trim. HELP??

Hrrmmmm.....

I know how SSB solved this problemo! ;)

THAT IS NOT AN OPTION BOB!!!!!

I totally can sympathize with you. I kept my hair all one length for years. It was very long and thick and I was so afraid to change my look. I researched many salons via internet, phone calls and personal visits. I decided on one that offered consultations. I got to sit down with a stylist, drink a cup of coffee and search through magazines to find a new hairstyle. She explained to me exactly how much would be cut off and how much effort I would have to put into my new style to maintain it. I felt so at ease and excited after that. Now, I am so happy I cut my hair because I love it! The salon costs more than you would pay at the mall, but it is so worth it. The more expensive salons seem to keep their stylists trained on the current styles and techniques. Find a salon you feel comfortable with and give it a try. Good luck!:D

Ask other women who cuts their hair. And tell them exactly what you want when you get in the chair :)

I know exactly how you feel. I had a REALLY bad haircut when I was 12. It was the first one that I went and had done all by myself and paid for it myself. It was horrible. The woman wasn't even paying attention to me as she cut my hair because she was too busy talking to the woman next to her. She actually cut my bangs on a sharp angle from one side to the other, with the short side ending up about 2mm long!!! I nearly died. :( Of course, as a 12 year old girl. I didn't know what to do, so I just went home and cried.

After that, I started cutting my own hair. I kept it long, usually in a ponytail and I just trimmed the top. I did this until I was 30 years old!!

A few years ago, my friend and neighbor, knowing how I hated having a ponytail everyday (especially at 30), convinced me to come with her to a hair appt and meet her hairdresser. I did and I loved her. She was a wonderful, friendly person. While she cut my friend's hair, we talked about different things she could do with mine. Afterwards, we looked at pictures together. I made an appt with her a few days later.

For the first cut, we didn't do anything drastic. We cut down the length to my shoulders and cleaned up the top. It looked very nice. She told me that she was very honored that I trusted her enough to cut my hair.

I now see her every 6 weeks. She has since opened her own shop in her home (which makes everything MUCH cheaper). We've now got my hair cut pretty short and layered and we've been experimenting with colors. We had been foiling it for awhile with different shades of blonde and sometimes red (I'm a brunette) and recently we did an all-over color of a reddish brown.

I am so happy with Donna as my hair dresser and I would never go to anyone else. You just need to find someone that you not only like, but trust as well. I hope you find someone like I did. :D

Over all these years I've had ONE hairdresser who actually cut it the length I wanted it. ALL the others always cut it too short! When you see someone with a style and length you like, ask them who cuts their hair. That's the best way. With my current hairdresser, I now tell her to just snip off the ends!

I too had long hair, to avoid going to the salon.... but I took the giant leap at a fab salon and now I am so glad........ I go to the same gal everytime, and we have a great time...... Although I still dawldle when it comes to making appt, I go about every 8 weeks....... lol She scolds me all the time, esp since I started coloring my hair! ROFL

In fact, I need to make an appt soon......... Doc says I can color my hair now......... and I need some happy hair!

Over the years, my hair has been long, medium, short, very short. I've had good perms and bad perms. I've been blonde, brunette, redhead and once even slightly purple LOL.

In other words, I've been through alot of hairdressers. Mainly because I move away or they do, and I was always willing to be a guinea pig.

For myself, (no offense to the ladies) I always seem to have better luck with male cosmetologists when it comes to haircolor and perms, although the best hair cuts actually came from women.

Expensive is not always better. One of the best haircuts my son ever got came from an old time barber who charged us $7/visit.

My advice: When you see a woman who's haircut you like, stop her and tell her you love her haircut and ask her questions about it. Where does she get it cut and which stylist cuts it? Does she have any highlights or coloring or perm done to it? What is her natural hair like? Fine, Curly? How long has she had this cut? How long has she been going to this stylist? Don't be shy. Most women are more than happy to spill the beans about their stylist if you ask them.

Don't try anything radical. If your hair is waistlength, don't try cutting it above the ears on the first try. If you are dark brunette, don't try to go blonde in one visit. When you make the first appointment, tell them up front that you are very nervous and you would prefer a consultation before you start cutting (they may charge you for this). Have pictures of hairstyles you like with you and ask them to look through all their hairstyle books to find more. Walk out if you are not comfortable. It is your hair and your money.

You also might try a local cosmetology school. Tell them you want to make an appointment with someone who is about to graduate, so you get someone experienced. You can save alot of money and still get good haircuts.

Also, stylists who enter hair shows are always looking for models. If you're willing to do that, you can be their model at the show (they will cut your hair onstage in front of everyone, color it, or whatever it is they are there to show) and get an up-to-date do for free and some fun.
