DD is 2.5. About a month ago she went to my sister's for the weekend and came home with a strange mark on her leg. At least this was the first time we had noticed it - I'm definitely not blaming my sister for anthing. She's golden. :)

Ok so it's on the front of her upper leg. Like right about the spot you'd consider her lap. It's a mark about the size of a dime, indented, and a slightly different color. Almost like an old healed burn. It's always looked like that, and never bruised or scabby.

The strange part is underneath. It's like whatever muscle or fat that was there has disappeared. So it's real mushy there and caves in a little. You can really feel it when you compare the two legs.

At a doctor's visit this week I showed it to the PA and she said she had never seen one before and didn't think it was from a vaccine (that is where they give shots). She said she wasn't too concerned about it, but would run it by the doctor. :confused3

DH and I were talking about it and now it's starting to bother us. What sort of dent shows up on a child's leg? And DD has a lot of food and environmental allergies, so we don't know if this is somehow related.

What kind of specialist would you see about this? Talk to my allergist or ask to see a dermatologist? Or could it just be an injury (from a fall) that hasn't healed well?

I've never seen anything like that, but IMHO, I would start with a dermatologist. Good Luck!

Strange-at first I was thinking kind of an inverted hernia or something along that line. I would maybe talk to the actual doctor first and show him the spot as it is hard to describe and it sounds like more of something you need to feel anyway. Is it in a spot where you can take a picture and post it here?

I agree.. If it's something the PA has "never seen before" and "doesn't know what it is", how can they just dismiss it like that? Go with your gut, mom.. If you think it isn't "right", follow up on it..

Good luck - and keep us posted..:goodvibes

If my ped couldn't help me, I think I would start with a dermatologist!!!!

She is at the grandparents right now, but I'll try and take a picture and post it. It is so weird!

I'd go with a dermatologist if your ped doesn't have an answer. My DD is prone to yeast infections/fungus that looks like that (don't know about the muscle, etc.). She's given a topical and a liquid prescription each time.

DD tends to get a lot of yeast infections in her diaper area due to her highly reactive skin. I'll have to look that up!

I would have asked to see the actual pediatrician while I was there, but if I hadn't, I'd see him/her now. And if that doctor didn't now what it was, I'd ask him/her who to see to follow up on it.

Ok here it is. It's on her left leg.

I'm sure it is nothing serious, but I would think that an injection probably did cause it.

I'd have your pediatrician see and feel it. I wouldn't go just on the PA's opinion.

If the doc has no clue what it is, I'd ask him/her what type of specialist he/she thinks should see it.

That's what I thought too, but it popped up a month ago and she hasn't had any shots since May. It's just so odd.

My ex-BIL had a mark that looked like that on his arm and he told me it was from a shot when he was in the service- but then he was a pathological liar...Praying for you, as a mom that has to be a little scary.

That looks *exactly* like the mark on my daughter's leg and hers was caused from an injection. Her doctor explained to me that the medication was pushed in too quickly (by an old and crochety nurse) and damaged the underlying tissue. This was before I became a nurse myself. We were warned over and over in nursing school that you could damage tissue in a little one if you weren't very careful to get the injection into the thigh muscle and to do it slowly. It's the most developed muscle in little ones and accepts meds from injections better than any other place on their body. (When done carefully!)

Bless her heart, she is such a cutie . Yes, I would definitely have it ck'd out to ease your concern, as better to be safe than sorry. Probably nothing serious, I agree seems little late for reaction from May's shot. When my Mom had a steriod shot for her arthritic knee, one leg muscle caved in for about a year, then suddenly popped back out. It was so weird! :guilty:
