OK, has anyone heard of or experienced this?

DS has been complaining off and on the last 3 weeks of an upset stomach. I got called to get him the day before spring break, 2 days the week after spring break, and this morning. He states his stomach doesn't feel good. First time attributed it to a bus ride shortly after lunch. Second time brought him home around 10 am and he slept for a couple hours and he was fine by the afternoon. The third afternoon there was only 1 hour left of school-brought him home, he slept for an hour and was fine.

This morning I get a call less than 30 minutes into the school day. I couldn't go get him as I was on my way into an appointment with the endontist. I called school when my appointment was done, and he was totally fine-back to normal the rest of the day.

I have probed and questioned for something going on at school. No admission from him of any issues, and I think he would tell me. It has happened at all different times of the day, so no pattern there.

So, the principal e-mailed me tonight to say that another child went to the doctor today after a week of nausea and was diagnosed with strep. So, DIS doctors-do I take him in for a strep test or just chalk it up to a kid who is sick of school and found out I would come and get him pretty quickly most days? :confused3

I think you can get sick/throw-up with strep. But I would think that he would also have a sore throat along with it.

After 3 weeks, I'd go to the doc just to rule anything out. My ds had stomach problems until the day I said that he'd have to have a scope to check things out and described it in gory detail. His stomach was quickly cured. Hope it's nothing....

Hmmmm.....

Well, my older dd was the type to have a high fever, headache, and throw up.

My younger dd would have no symptoms except a fever, a negative swab but then show up with scarlet fever and surprise the culture comes back as strep, if they sent it off.

There is no rhyme or reason to illness.

I would at least look in the throat and check temps every so often. Honestly if my kid stays home she goes to the doctor. I stopped playing guess the illness or sick of school long ago.

When my kids get strep, they often have stomach issues before the sore throat shows up. I think it's pretty common in kids. Now, three weeks is a long time so maybe it's not strep, but it probably wouldn't hurt to get him checked out since something is going on with him. There have been a lot of stomach bugs going around here this spring. Good luck. :goodvibes

LOL because that is exactly what I did to him tonight when he got home. I might schedule him for his well child and mention it.

My daughter will start complaining of a stomach ache first, then will come the sore throat, and of course after that the "smell" of strep coming from her mouth. It has a very distinct smell. I am quite familiar with it from working in a doctor's office and taking swabs from sick kids mouth. So yes, strep can present first with a stomach ache or upset belly and then go from there. My kid is classic for a tummy ache first.

Oh just to add....first thing I do is check their homework site for missing or late stuff. Sometimes I find what the trouble is there.:headache:

:wave2: Thanks fellow Michigander. My kids are so seldom sick, and being a nurse, you would think I'd have a better idea what to do with him. I have to admit the last time he was in for an illness (age 5) I promised him it wasn't for shots and he ended up with Rocephin in both thighs :headache: Bad mommy!

Before she had her tonsils out, DD had strep more times than I can count. She never complained of a sore throat. The one and only symptom was an upset stomach. If you started throwing up, I knew it was mostly likely strep.

Your welcome. Nice to see another Michigander on here too! That doesn't seem to happen very often. I hope your son gets better soon!! ;)

Stomach pain with no sore throat is how strep showed up in my kids.

I'd go in for a swab.

My daughter never had sore throats with her strep - always an upset stomach...me on the other hand feels like my throat is on fire when I have strep.

My son had strep and his only symptom was hives. I'd go in for the swab just to be sure.

Yes, you can have upset stomach w/ strep. And vomiting is another symptom.

My son gets stomach aches when he has a sinus infection.

My other son has a stomach ache whenever he doesn't want to do something. And especially if his brother is staying home from school. Sorry, sinus infection isn't contagious, get out of the car! :p

Another thing to look for is a rash. My DS had a rash on his face for a couple of days and we were leaving for vacation the next day so I took him in and was shocked when they wanted to do a strep test since he didn't have any other symptoms. I was more shocked when it came back positive.

My youngest has had strep so many times this year and all had various symptoms and only a couple of times was it a sore throat.

One time it was complaints of chest pain which I associated with her asthma but it was strep. She has only ever ran a fever 1 time with the strep infections. Her tonsils were taken out last week due to so much strep.

OP - please take your child to the doctor and let them know what the symptoms are and that he has been exposed to a child with strep.

I would definitely take him to the doctor!

Strep is one of those weird illnesses because the symptoms can vary from person to person and can even be different each time you personally have it.

I used to get it a lot as a kid but it was so long ago that I had forgotten what it was like. Well, I had it twice last year (I work at a clinic and it was going around). The first time I had it I just KNEW I had the flu. My temp was 104, I was hallucinating, and I was extremely sick to my stomach. Turned out it was strep and I was told that nausea is extremely common with strep. I lost 5 lbs because I just couldn't eat. I didn't have any vomiting but was super sick to my stomach. I did have a sore throat with it that time though.

The 2nd time I had it, it was completely different. I thought I simply had a sinus infection and did not really feel all that bad but it was also strep.

My ds had it in January this year and he ended up throwing up with it. I wasn't surprised by it this time because his sypmtoms were very similar to when I had it the first time last year right down to his 104 temp.

My dd also threw up when she had it a couple years ago but she did not have the high fever or any of that so you never know.
